irst, I need to apologize for my hasty mention of the Christmas Coloring Contest in the October issue. I stated the coloring page was

to be in the November issue with results featured in December. That was incorrect. It will be in the December issue, the winner will be announced on December 20th and the top picks shown in the January issue. Sorry for the miscommunication. First place will receive a $25 gift card to Toys R Us. How was your Halloween? If you have any pictures from Halloween parties or the night of and your lovely Thanksgiving decorations, we would love to feature them. There are a lot of events coming up in November and December. Make sure to check inside and also on facebook for any updates during the month. Any pictures, video, and events that did not fit in here are on facebook. Visit www.facebook.com/YCNTempleTerrace.

Be Thankful Thanksgiving PoemBe thankful that you don't already have everything you desire.

If you did, what would there be to look forward to?Be thankful when you don't know something,

for it gives you the opportunity to learn.Be thankful for the difficult times.

During those times you grow.Be thankful for your limitations,

because they give you opportunities for improvement.Be thankful for each new challenge,

because it will build your strength and character.Be thankful for your mistakes.

They will teach you valuable lessons.Be thankful when you're tired and weary,

because it means you've made a difference. It's easy to be thankful for the good things.A life of rich fulfillment comes to those who

are also thankful for the setbacks.Gratitude can turn a negative into a positive.Find a way to be thankful for your troubles,

and they can become your blessings.

Masque Theatre Benefits from Random Act of Kindness Masque Theatre may be moving, and having to find venues to perform, but it’s kind residents of Temple

Terrace like Gail Carpenter, owner of Olde World Cheese Shop, that make it all possible. Gail graciously donated

her restaurant to Masque Theatre to stage the reading of Love Letters on October 14, 15, and 16.

We want to thank her from the bottom of our hearts! The Olde World Cheese shop provides an intimate setting for the reading, and residents may enjoy light concessions,

along with beer and wine for a donation. Gail truly showed the reason why kindness is such a gift to the arts

and to the community!

What are you doing the second Wednesday of this month?

As a 20+ year resident of Temple Terrace I have always tried to find out what was going on locally, exploring shops, diners, and any quaint hole in the

wall. Through the years I have driven by a little building on 56th between Fowler and Fletcher. It was a gym and one day the sign was replaced with the silhouette of a couple dancing. It took friends that live way over on the other side of the airport to tell me it was Rhapsody Ballroom and that they drive all that way at least once a week to dance. That got me in the door. What I found was so much talent and so many personable people. Especially on the second Wednesday of the month when they have dancing and special performances!

The last show I saw was sponsored by Frank Sliwa It began unexpectedly with a ‘flash mob’ of 20 students that took to the floor with a combination of Salsa, Samba, and Cha Cha.A pair of students also presented a dazzling American Rumba complete with lifts and spins. The instructor then danced with three

truly accomplished students performing a sizzling Samba, a mesmerizing Waltz, and a fantastic International Rumba. I was having as much fun clapping

and cheering as the dancers were dancing. I am so glad I walked through that door.

Come dance with us!

ong time residents of Temple Terrace consider the TT Arts Festival to be one of the longest

standing traditions in our community. And so it is with the 38th annual being planned for November 12th and 13th at Riverhills Park. However many people don’t know that the Arts Council works year round to promote and support the growth of arts in the city of Temple Terrace. Funds raised through the arts and crafts festival and other events such as an annual Art Auction are donated to art programs, scholarships, non-profit organizations or

There’s how it was then –

and there’s how it is now.

The question is how will it look (if it’s still around) in another 50 or 75 years? The Temple Terrace Preservation Society was privileged to have Bryan Weinstein of Tampa Changing present his collection of re-photography to our group on October 6th. Re-photography, also known as then & now photography, involves locating a historic photograph and taking a modern photograph of the scene from the same vantage point. When the two photographs

are shown together, the evolution of the city’s architecture, its changing urban landscapes, and its destruction and preservation of historic buildings can easily be seen. Mr. Weinstein’s presentation of images, all taken in the Tampa Bay area, dramatically illustrated both the tragic degradation of beautiful buildings that have fallen into disrepair and/or have been horribly modified, juxtaposed with the reverence and value placed on others through preservation. While it’s easy to take these structures for granted, if we as a community fail to recognize and protect the historic and architectural assets within our city, we may suddenly find them gone forever. It seems when most people find themselves in or around old houses and buildings, they are drawn to the history of the place, and there’s great value in that. It gives us a sense of who we are and where we come from. Mr. Weinstein’s project is a valuable

resource in making known both the tragedies, and the victories, in the stories of many structures in the Tampa Bay Area. We applaud and support his efforts. If you would like to see his work, please visit his website at www.TampaChanging.com.

activities promoting art excellence. Just stop by Riverhills Elementary to see the delightful walls sponsored by the Council or visit the kiln at Terrace Community School. Here young artists are working with materials provided by the council through a school grant. Selected works of art hang at the Lightfoot Center (where they can be purchased throughout the year). The Arts Festival is many things to

many different people. To those looking for an idyllic setting to display their fine or contemporary works of art, the calm and serene setting along the bank of the Hillsborough River is the perfect place to highlight their work. And to those who make the trek to the park an annual event to find that perfect birthday or holiday

gift, the combination of scenery and talent is well worth saving time on their hectic calendars. The event also offers food and entertainment to keep everyone entertained. School children from the local elementary schools are busy working on their “Fresh Views” art entries which will be on display throughout the park. During the two-day activity, young artists of any age can participate in making their own work of art under the instruction of members of the Arts Council. Fine artists and crafters are welcome to complete an application and new artists are always encouraged to apply. understanding, goodwill and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service. The Temple Terrace Rotary Club has developed a series of speakers as a way of putting into practice the first Object – the development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service. The CIP – City’s Important People series has been a great success and provided club members with an insight to the people considered to be important to the development and growth of our beautiful city. The speakers were asked to tell us about the person behind the job. Each speaker has brought a real insight to our members and a real opportunity for friendship. We started with our elected and appointed officials of City government and have also invited both Fire and Police Chiefs. We have scheduled “important people” such as representatives of Temple Terrace civic organizations, the Chamber, Florida Hospital-Tampa and USF as the year progresses. We meet every Tuesday morning at

7:15am, at the IHOP Restaurant at Morris Bridge & Fowler. We adjourn promptly at 8:30am. Getting to know your fellow members is possible through our service projects such as the Neighbor-to-Neighbor Clean-up days and the adoption of MOSI Partnership School, and King HS Interact Club. The club offered membership to women in Temple Terrace who would like to join for the simple purpose of making friends and having fun with others in the community. Cilantro Indian Cuisine11009 North 56th Street

Tampa , Fla. 33617813-983-8220

www.cilantroindiancuisine.com

The Mystery Diner, on a quest for international cuisine, took the family out for another evening meal recently, and found in Temple Terrace, a wonderful place pleasing to the palate, friendly for the family with a casual atmosphere that feels warm and inviting. Cilantro Indian Cuisine serves Indian and Pakistani dishes in beautifully decorated dining rooms on fine china with prompt and friendly servers. In fact, we were impressed with how many people there were waiting on us, including the manager, who checked in frequently. The Cilantro experience began with the alluring aromas of spices wafting through

the dining areas from the kitchen, and continued when the food arrived at the table, from the appetizers to the main courses, and through dessert. Again, it took a while for the family to order because of the many menu items to choose from. So while we looked at the litany of lovely possibilities including vegetarian, chicken, lamb, goat and seafood, we ordered a basket of garlic nan baked to perfection and garnished with fresh cilantro. (The kid’s hands were actually a blur as I watched his plate fill with a trio of triangles of nan.)The wife was sharing the love of lentils with us by passing the bowl of mulligatawny soup, while I just couldn’t convince them that the lightly spiced potato and green pea Samosas wrapped in a crisp, light pastry were worth a try without dousing their tongues with the never-ending supply of glasses of cold water at the table. TMD and family have enjoyed this type of cuisine before, but Cilantro brings it

to a new level of culinary quality by cooking a variety of classic Indian dishes with varying levels of spice that agree with the wife’s particularly sensitive palate and the kid’s touchy taste buds. I like the spices to have a little more heat than the family, and that worked perfectly with my order of lamb rogan josh,

a cache of cubed lamb simmered with onions, tomatoes and spices over a generous serving of aromatic basmati rice. There are plenty of possibilities for kids on the menu and TMD kid ordered the chicken biryani which has cubed chicken with fresh mint cooked into basmati rice. There was more of this to take home, but this was due to several helpings of garlic nan and a heaping helping of mom’s sag paneer. This item of homemade cottage cheese simmered with lightly-creamed spinach over basmati rice was the hit of the evening, as the previously aforementioned spice-challenged palate was singing with joyous delight when it was all taste and no heat. The spouse’s song was shared with servers and manager alike. For dessert, we took part in the chocolate temptation (three

forks and one dessert), which consisted of two layers of dark chocolate cake, with chocolate pudding in each layer and separated by chocolate cream cheese icing. No words needed here ... The prices are comparable to the quality of the food, but still affordable, and we took home plenty for the next day’s meal as well. If you are looking for something out of the ordinary, with international flare, a variety of choices, with prompt service and pleasant atmosphere, then you must add this to your dining out list. The Mystery Diner gives Cilantro Indian Cuisine in Temple Terrace four and a half forks out of five for another near-perfect dining experience for the family on any night of the week.

Learning styles are established to tailor lesson plans to meet the needs of each student.• Access to Charter Schools USA's Student Information System (SIS) – Parents are given access to their children's personal information through a password-protected computer-based system that allows them to monitor their progress. foster an atmosphere of self-discipline in a safe learning environment, and maximize individual productivity to meet the needs of a changing global society. It is a goal and mentality brought to work every day by the men and women that serve our community. From emergency response to public education, from fire prevention to community involvement, we take pride in the service we provide our customers and the property we protect each day. Our department's success can be attributed to our highly trained professional men and women and the support of City staff, elected officials, and the citizens we serve.

community news

This support could not have been more evident than in the spring of 2010 when the Center for Public Safety Excellence (CPSE) was invited to facilitate the development of a new strategic plan for the future of the department. A select group of fire department and City personnel, community leaders and residents were invited to participate in the workshop to evaluate the fire department on all levels of service. The turnout was phenomenal! As a result of the overwhelming response and participation, not only did we identify new target goals, but we also reinforced the already successful programs and processes that had been in place for years. The fire department’s commitment to excellence was recognized in 2006 when it became an Internationally Accredited agency, and again in 2011when awarded the designation by the Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI). What does this mean? For the department, it represents TTFD’s high level of success in training and preparedness. It

gives the department worldwide recognition. And for residents, it means you are consistently provided with high standard of service. As part of our efforts to provide excellent service and public education, we have decided to begin writing a monthly newsletter specifically for you, our customers, to provide you with information on upcoming events, safety tips and more. We’ll include a “Frequently Asked Questions” section that allows you to ask whatever’s on your mind about the department. This will be an opportunity to connect in a way we have not had before. Consider it another tool for creating a safer home for you and your family. Don’t forget the FAQ portion; submit your questions today. We look forward to hearing from you!
