The Sentinel

Goes Green…

What’s Next?

THE SENTINEL GOES GREEN

If you receive (and read) Temple Sinai’s weekly e-mails, then you know that the Sentinel is now

available on-line, and we are off ering you the option of receiving the Senti-nel on-line rather than a hard copy in the mail. In fact, if we have an e-mail address for you, you will no longer receive a hard copy of the Sentinel unless we hear otherwise from you by August 1.

The reasons for this develop-ment are twofold: fi rst, to reduce the amount of paper we use (some might say “waste”) by mailing out almost 500 hard copies of the Sentinel every month. We want to become better stewards of the planet and further reduce our carbon footprint. We have already demonstrated our com-mitment to “going green” by the use of solar panels, energy-saving light bulbs, recycling, and other green de-tails of our building’s design and fea-tures. And second, by going digital, we will be more responsible stewards of the Temple’s fi nances.

For those of you who have seen the full-color on-line version, I think

you’ll agree that the improved aesthetics of the Sentinel signifi -cantly enhance the reading expe-rience.

If you are interested in the de-tailed standards for green build-ings, check out the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating Sys-

tem developed by U.S. Green Building Council (see: www.usgbc.org/leed.)

TECHNOLOGY & SOCIAL MEDIA

The improvements and innova-tions we’ve made to the Sentinel, website, and the weekly e-mail refl ect our desire to improve and increase avenues of communication between Temple Sinai’s leadership and its membership. However, all of these are one-way communications: from us to you. But there is a whole world of social media out there that can ex-pand our one-way communications and add two-way communications.

If you’re like me, you’ve probably heard the names of a variety of social media—Facebook, Twitter, blogs, podcasts—but don’t really have a clue about what they are and how to use them. (For a one-hour tutorial video, check out the following link: http://lounge.verticalresponse.com/group/socialmedia.)

At the URJ Biennial in Toronto last November, URJ President Rabbi Eric Yoffi e (in his Shabbat morning ser-mon) urged congregations to make the transition from one-way to two-way communications and suggested congregational blogs (I wrote about

this in my February Sentinel article). With the veil of mystery surrounding social media lifted just this much, I was inspired (and had the courage) to attend a social media workshop at the CCAR Convention in San Francisco last March.

What I am beginning to under-stand from both of these exposures to the world of social media, is that social media has the potential to improve the effi ciency and eff ective-ness of our communications with one another; to provide new avenues for networking and for Jewish journeys; to deepen our sense of community; to allow for immediate responses to each other’s questions and needs; and to give us a better way to reach out to our members who live in outly-ing areas or are homebound.

I’m not sure if we are ready to make the plunge—but I would like to set up a task force (a combination of knowledgeable, tech-savvy people and those interested in deepening our connection to one another) in order to investigate what social me-dia can do for us. If you’re interested, please let me know.

There will be some challenges. Some of the ones I anticipate are monitoring and privacy issues; loss of the live, human, in-person connection; and how to use social media without excluding those of our members who can’t access or are uncomfortable with the internet.

We Need to Talk

Now, in a marriage or rela-

tionship, such a statement is a

sure sign of trouble. The talkee (the person to whom the statement is made) typically takes one of two stances: make a quick excuse such as there’s a fi re that needs to be put out, run away and defer the discussion to a later time, which usually only em-boldens the talker and may result in some shouting; or drop everything, sit down and face it as maturely as possible. Well, congregants, we need to talk, and like in any relationship you have two choices, put this Sentineldown (or if on line, surf to another page) and refuse to listen, or read on. I hope you will read on, because the information is important.

Temple Sinai fi nished the fi scal year that ended June 30, 2009 in reasonable shape considering the broader economic conditions around us. We had about $94,000 in cash in the bank, and we ended with an op-erating gain of about $13,000. As we started the current year that ended on June 30, 2010, we had member-ship dues commitments from about 153 members; however, as the year ended on June 30, only about 136 had met their commitments. (I am using end of May numbers and then estimating to the end of June, 2010, since the end of June fi nancial report was not available at the time this was written.) At least ten member fami-lies who pledged at the start of the year had paid nothing into early 2010. By the end of May 2010, we had sig-nifi cantly eaten into our cash, which stood at about $41,000, and we were seeing an operating defi cit of about $28,000. Thus, we are closing the 2009-2010 fi scal year in far weaker condition than we started.

This is a serious matter. Although our membership count has remained

Wt

ts

about the same (currently 148 family units), we are receiving less from our members. If this past year’s pattern continues, we risk being in serious fi nancial trouble this time next year. The services we provide, from, if you’ll pardon my frankness, brit mi-lah at your son’s eighth day through funeral services in our Hebrew cem-etery, come at a cost. We risk not be-ing able to support a full-time Rabbi and deliver the services you expect. This is not a picture any of us wish to see. I have spoken many times over the last several years about the im-portance of your support. I’d like to go back and write a few of my funnier columns, but I couldn’t even consider that as I thought about our current situation.

Although some of our other in-come sources have been stable over this past year, it is important that we try our best to maintain a level of membership dues that ensures our survival. We have always expected dues to account for the majority of our operating income. If each fam-ily paid the recommended $105 per month, we would be in fi ne shape. However, we realize that some of our members simply cannot aff ord to pay this level of support. For those of you who elect to pay less, please review your fi nancial priorities and consider upping your commitment as best you can. We also recognize that many of our families are doing relatively well while others may not be, and I hope that those of you in this camp can make additional contributions where you can. The Board is doing its part to trim costs, and our budgeted ex-penses for 2010-2011 are expected to be at least $17,000 below last year’s. Please strive to make your support of Temple Sinai a fi nancial priority this year!

On a brighter note, literally, please join me in thanking Temple Sinai member Heidi Loeb for donating stained glass panels for the six win-dows above the platform in the Social Hall. The beautiful designs, presented to the Board at our June meeting, will be in place by the end of August, and

we are excited about how they will transform the mood, especially dur-ing High Holy Day services. We’d love to expand this to include some part of the sanctuary windows as well, so if you are interested in supporting this, please let me know. We are also in need of a new memorial plaque board. The 54-space board will cost $2,600, and a donor contributing the full amount will be recognized by name on the plaque. Please contact me if you are interested in this spon-sorship. I also want to thank those of you who donated toward the Israeli photography exhibit scheduled for later this year at the Nevada Museum of Art. As a result, Temple Sinai will be highlighted as a major sponsor.

Enjoy your summer, and I look forward to seeing you soon.

Shalom,Jake

TISHA B’AV

During the heat and dryness of the summer comes the holy day of Tisha b’Av (July 20 on the secular calendar). It is a solemn day on which we mourn

the destruction of the First and Second Temples and the burning of the city of Jerusalem. It is traditional to fast and to read the Book of Lamentations.

Tisha b’Av also aff ords us the opportunity to refl ect on our own personal losses and grief. On both the com-munal and the personal levels, Tisha b’Av reminds us that out of disaster comes renewal.

SPECIAL HAFTAROT

The Haftarah readings for the three Shabbats prior to Tisha b’Av (July 20) are known as the Haftarot of Affl iction or Retribution. Their purpose is to warn

us of the serious consequences of our sins. The Haftarah readings for the seven weeks between Tisha b’Av and Rosh HaShanah are known as the Haftarot of Consola-tion; their purpose is to comfort us as we approach the High Holy Days.

So-Long, But Not Goodbye from Patty Dickens

Dear Temple Sinai family,Yes, it's true. I have decided to pass the honored torch of conducting the High Holy Day Choir to the

willing and able hands of Gerry Willis. Here's a bit of the history of that treasured musical journey:

Louis Dickens—along with his niece, Ethel Jaff e, friend Mary Garfi nkle and others—was an enthusiastic choir member when I met him in the late 60's. When I moved back to Reno in 1979, I joined the choir under Milton Gumbert's leadership. Shelley Lescott was our wonderful lead soprano and 12-year-old Andrei Hobson our youngest member (for a while his younger brother, Josh, joined us). Yes, I had the pleasure of watching Andrei progress from boy soprano to high school tenor to adult baritone.

When Milton passed away, Sam Cantor took the helm. After Sam passed away, it was my turn. When Myra arrived as our fi rst full-time rabbi, I was still conducting the choir and playing the organ as we sang from the small upstairs balcony area. Myra recalls looking up at my heav-ily pregnant profi le when I was carrying my second son, Aaron—and four years later—Kenny. And what a great acoustic phenomenon that balcony was! Folks couldn't believe there were so few of us from the full sound they heard.

So it seems that I've been a part of the Temple Sinai music scene for a few decades. As I write this, I have just retired after almost 38 years of teaching elementary pub-lic school music. That includes 30+ years in the Washoe County School District, of which the last 20 years were at Westergard Elementary School, which opened in 1989.

It will be strange not starting the next school year and, at the same time, coordinating the annual High Holiday choir practices. I feel so blessed to have been able to work with Myra, Andre, Leslie Krochmal, Alan Kass, Carol Pevny, Deborah Achtenberg, Rabbi Elizabeth Webb-Beyer, Shel-don Chanes, Natalie Sera, Phil Shalitt, Gail Ferrell, Karen Abrams, Margie Newman, Margaret Hellsworth, Viktoria Hertling, Ayla Gafni, Van Vinikow, Mike Medvin and, more recently, Andi Kaylor, Carol Fineberg, Gerry Willis, Jon Leo and our wonderful new Rabbi Teri Appleby. They, and you, such dedicated congregants, have been my family for so long; I plan to continue seeing you all, but now by looking up at the Bima, not down from it.

I know that you will give Rabbi Teri, Jon, Gerry and the new and returning choir members your full support and appreciation, as you have always done for me.

Cheers, Shalom, and L'ChaimPatty Dickens

(SAVE THE DATE: Patty will be honored at Services on Friday, August 27)

Torah for Tots

Torah for Tots, Temple Sinai's program for the very young, will resume in October. All

children ages 2-5 are welcome, Temple membership is not re-quired, there is no fee, and siblings

are always invited. The classes teach about Shabbat and seasonal Jewish holidays through stories, songs, games, simple prayers, and food. To join the class, or for further information, contact Judy Schumerat [email protected].

Religious School News

Temple Sinai’s Religious School had a good year. The children

learned about Jewish holi-days, tzedakah, life cycle events and so much more. Our beginning Hebrew students learned not only the Aleph Bet and but also how to read some basic words. More advanced students practiced read-ing and learned prayers; some even learned how to hold a brief conversa-tion in Hebrew.

Each year our teachers expand on what the students learned in prior years and enrich students’ knowl-edge with arts and crafts projects and other activities. If you have ideas

or suggestions for program activities, please feel free to contact me.

Todah Rabah

Thanks to all who have donated to the Religious School either by

way of our Non-Fundraiser Fund-raiser, or by other means. With your support our Religious School is fl ourishing.

The Sentinel is… GOING GREEN!

In furtherance of the Jewish tradition of "Tikkun Olam" (to repair the world), the

Sentinel, your Temple Sinai monthly newsletter, is going green... and going digital! We have a completely new and improved interactive web-based way to view and expe-rience the monthly Sentinel. And don't worry... if you need to keep a copy on hand for easy reference, you can still print out individual pages, or the entire issue, (you may, for example, want to print the calendar page to post on your refrigerator). To view this new on-line version, go to www.TempleSinai-Reno.com. There is a display on the main page.

This innovation will help Temple Sinai to not only be good stewards of our planet (by making the Sentinel vir-tually carbon neutral), but also to be good stewards of our fi nances.

If you would like to CONTINUE having a hard copy mailed to you, YOU MUST reply to this email or call the Temple offi ce at 775-747-5508 and let us know. If we do not hear from you by August 1, we will assume that you are happy to move on to the "digital only" version of the Sentinel. As soon as each issue becomes available, an email will be sent out to all our subscribers letting them know it is ready for viewing. Also, a full year of archived issues can always be accessed from our website at www.TempleSinai-Reno.com/AboutUs/TemplefBulletin/.

ADVERTISERS:

The Sentinel is now in color and more beautiful than ever before and has never been easier to access. Our advertisers, who have always enjoyed having their ads displayed in our monthly issues, will now have them displayed in COLOR. In addition, your ads are now on our website AND in our WEEKLY emails. Never before has it been a better time to show your support of Tem-ple Sinai by placing an ad in our newsletter. To place your ad, call the Temple offi ce at 775-747-5508 or email [email protected].

On Sunday, June 13, we heard from Master Gardner Don Kurzman, who spoke to a

record setting audience. Too bad we couldn’t move the meeting to my yard, but he gave all of us some great ideas. Next year we might do this again, but in April to get our yards ready for planting. All though we don’t have any formal plans for speakers in July and August, we are discussing some ideas depending on our numbers available. September we will kick off the new year with fantastic speaker, and musician, Stephanie Sant' Ambrogio, who is Assistant Professor of Violin and Vio-la, at University of Nevada, Reno and Artistic Director, Cactus Pear Music Festival.

Our future plans call for an attor-ney speaking on “Wills, Trusts, Pro-bate, etc.” and maybe one to speak on the Nevada Constitution. All plans for speakers/activities are wide open; just email me (Dave Levine at [email protected]) or Jeff Gingold ([email protected]) with your ideas.

Help Every Washoe County Child Have Clean Diapers

Please Donate to the Northern Nevada Diaper Bank Diapers Will be Collected at Temple Sinai

Beginning June 1, 2010

Disposable diapers cost up to $100 per month at any age Some families live on less than $400 per month Proper sanitation of cloth diapers is impossible for families living

in shelters or motels. One in four children in Nevada lives in poverty Day care centers will not take infants without an adequate

supply of disposable diapers A mother who cannot afford diapers cannot put her child in care,

so she cannot work

Many families in our community cannot afford to buy diapers for their infants

Some families have to choose between food and diapers

TOGETHER WE CAN HELP!

Donations of diapers are being collected and will be distributed to families in need in our community by the

Northern Nevada Diaper Bank,

the only weekly source of free diapers in this community
