• In 3 weeks, for the Shabbat Message, I’ll be teaching “Prayer For The Palestinian Problem”. It’s my most well known teaching, I’ve been sharing it for about 24 years now across the globe.

• The teaching is a run down of what is really happening between the Israelis and the Palestinians. It makes it easy to understand what the situation over there is actually about and what the Israelis are up against. It’s very political in nature (non religious) and leaves no room for misunderstanding the true motives of the players in the region. Believer or not this is a teaching no one should miss.

• Having lived in Israel as many years as I have I give first hand information as to how many of the PLO factions were born and what their true intent is. • Today we’re going to talk a little about tefilin (te-fillin Ashkenazi). • This is a Mitzvah for the men. What’s a Mitzvah? • A Mitzvah is an all around Hebrew term which means Commandments and/or good deeds.

• It is sometimes translated as “works”.• “Oh well, brother, we don’t have to do works anymore, don’t you know Jesus nailed that to the cross.”

• Oh well, then I guess the Disciple, James, was an idiot because he said in James 2 17Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.

• Jesus didn’t nail works to the Cross! Because if you don’t have works, you’re faith is void.

• So, tefilin is a Mitzvah for the men.• Let’s talk about that for a second.

• Sometimes ladies ask me “Why do the men get all the Mitzvahs???”• I have an answer to that, but first let’s remember…

• I didn’t make up the rules. Judaism has been around for a very, very long time and G-d has declared what the truth is.

• I don’t decide that I’m not going to follow the truth because I don’t think men have enough participation. • The truth is what it is.

• But I do have another reason. • Women have so many MORE Mitzvahs (good deeds/commandments) that they perform everyday then the men do. • They’re not as structured as the Mitzvahs are for men… they can’t be!

• I watch Teresa in her daily work with the baby, how do you structure that??? When baby’s hungry, he’s hungry, when baby fills his diaper, he fills it.

• Caring for another person is a Mitzvah in itself. • Teresa is caring for me and the baby all day long. • She’s doing way more Mitzvahs then I am and she’s doing them every day.

• Women on an average do 2-3 times more Mitzvahs per day then men do. That’s a lot.• So ladies, please leave just a few Mitzvahs for us men to do. Don’t be greedy.

• Just a few, we need to do works as well. Look at all the Mitzvahs you get. Not only caring for the family all day but you do lots of other Mitzvahs as well…

• For example: Linda does all the networking now, makes the calls to let everyone know Sabbath is coming, thank you cards etc (she does much more then that, this is just an example)

•Nicole does the Children’s ministry now every Sabbath. Teresa is going to be helping to oversee the ladies ministry, Pam will be helping with organizational aspects of the ministry. Evi has a food ministry with us to keep us all healthy.

•If you’re a woman and you’re NOT doing more Mitzvah’s then the men, please please give me call cause I have some Mitzvahs just for you.

•If you’re a man and don’t think you have enough Mitzvahs have a chat with Bob… he’s got too many Mitzvahs and he loves to share.

• Eventually we’ll have a Beit Midrash where the men go and do their daily prayers which is another Mitzvah. I’ve never heard a woman complain about that because it gets us men out of your hair for a couple hours.

• “Yeah, but we can’t be Rabbis! Or read the Torah portions in Synagogue or wear Tzit tzits etc etc”• Quit being greedy! Leave somethin for us men to do. You want all your Mitzvahs AND our Mitzvahs too. You’re asking too much and it’s out of balance and thus un-Scriptural.

• The Mitzvah of Tefilin is for the men…• What is Tefilin??? • Deut 11:18 says…

• Therefore, you are to store up these words of mine in your heart and in all your being; tie them on your hand as a sign; put them at the front of a headband around your forehead; 19 teach them carefully to your children, talking about them when you sit at home, when you are traveling on the road, when you lie down and when you get up; 20 and write them on the door-frames of your house and on your gates.

• The Bible says tie them on your hand as a sign; put them at the front of a headband around your forehead so guess what we do???

•So exactly how do we do this?•I have a video for you. But remember this is what the Orthodox Jews do. Afterwards I’ll show you how we Messianics are different.

• So, that’s how the Orthodox do it and they have some good ideas, but we’re not Orthodox, we’re Messianic. • Our goal is to get back to the First Century Church. So what do WE do?

Well, the first thing we had to do is find some first century Tefilin.And, we’ve found that… this is what they looked like.

• That’s what Jesus wore.• Wanna be like Jesus? Great, He wore Tefilin! • It is a Commandment. Yeshua never broke His own Laws!

• So what we’ve done is we have begun to make 1rst Century Tefilin. We at Beit Aveinu are the first to produce anything like this and I hope you can appreciate just how unique this really is.

• Messianics are getting very excited about this and we already have orders from around the world. • These have not been made in nearly 2,000 years.

• Bob is the first one to craft them they are all hand made and he’s making sets as fast as he can.• We’re already making them for all our other Synagogues as well.

• Many of you here have already ordered a set, if you haven’t and you’re interested, again, see Bob at the back table after service

• So, what do we do with them?• We use them when we pray, we keep the Commandment.• I use them in the mornings… First Day (Sunday) to the beginning of Shabbat (Before Friday evening) but not on Sabbath or Holy days.

• How do we wrap them? • I’ve developed a system specifically for Messianics.• (Demonstrate).

• The Bible says to fasten them on our hands, not our forearms as the Orthodox do. tie them on your hand as a sign; put them at the front of a headband around your forehead;

• So we do that we fasten them on the palms of our hands. Then we wrap 4 times on the forearm. 4 times represents the four letters in Yeshua’s name as He is our shield.

• The final wraps on the upper arm produce the Shin, the first letter of the Shma.

• And that is how the Messianic ties “First Century” Tefilin.

•If other people want to wear Rabbinic tefilin, that’s fine, no problem and they can wrap them just like the Rabbinical Jews do, great.

• But this is how we wrap “First Century” tefilin. • We decide that because we’re the first ones to do them.• Unless we find First Century instructions then we’d adjust.

• Sabbath School is now available!!! Nicole Gates will be heading our Sabbath School program.• Would you like to say hello Nicole?

• Teresa and I have spent some time with Nicole, she’s great with kids and very dynamic. • We’re very happy to have her working with us and helping us further the Messianic Message with our youth.

The local JCA (Jewish Charities of America) office realized that the organization had never received a donation from the town's most successful lawyer. The person in charge of contributions called him to persuade him to contribute.

• The Hellenists were leaning towards paganism and they were saying, “hey why are the Torah Observant Believers (Hebraous in Greek, those who leaned towards Torah) getting taken care of first?”• Because the Torah Observant widows were supposed to be taken care of first!!!

• The Disciples then said to the Hellenists, “Well, if you don’t get that, then we really don’t have time to explain it to you, we’re gonna get some help”. That’s what’s going on in this passage

• There’s a big difference between saying… “The Greek speaking Jews were murmuring against the Hebrew speaking Jews” then saying “The paganized guys were speaking against the good guys.”

• If it’s the “Greek speaking Jews murmuring against the Hebrew speaking Jews” it just makes the Jews look petty.•“There go those Jews again murmuring against each other.”

• And guess what, that’s exactly how the commentators paint it.• Mathew Henry… “Hitherto the Disciples had been of one accord; this often had been noticed to their honour; but now they were multiplied, they began to murmur.”

• This is wrong on so many levels!• First of all it didn’t say the Twelve were the ones murmuring. It was between some Hellenist guys and some Torah Observant guys concerning their widows. The Twelve weren’t being dishonored and neither were the Torah Observant guys.

• No they didn’t do the right thing!!! the Torah Observant were in the right and the Hellenists WERE THE ONES COMPLAINING!!!• “the Greek-speaking Jews began complaining against those who spoke Hebrew”• Is this not clear???

•This same commentator says, “The Hellenists were more open to the Greek culture but the Judeans had a more holier then thou attitude.”• No, they were holier then the Hellenists!

• You see, if you don’t bring an anti-Semitic slant to the table, your whole theology will be different.• If you do bring an anti-Semitic slant with you, almost every verse will be misunderstood.

•So the Twelve called a general meeting of the talmidim and said, "It isn't appropriate that we should neglect the Word of God in order to serve tables.

• The Twelve were busy. • The Congregation was growing. • They had a lot of emails coming in.• 3 local services a week and Bible schools to teach over seas with power point presentations to put together.

• But they were busy so they had to delegate.• We had a leadership meeting on Monday night. It went really well and we’ll be delegating more responsibility out to those who qualify.

• This is a very interesting verse here.• It says pick out 7 men. This was not an arbitrary number!• Who were these 7 men?

• Some of you may remember a teaching I did here explaining the different positions in the Synagogue. Let’s review those real quick…

•A Nasi – The President of the Synagogue• A Ruler of the Synagogue – A Nasi who had joined together with 2 other Nasi’s to form a tribunal. We read about one named Jairus in Luke 8:41… 41 And, behold , there came a man named Jairus, and he was a Ruler of the Synagogue: and he fell down at Jesus' feet, and besought him that he would come into his house:

• Then of course there was the Rabbi. He was a teacher, scribe and theologian. Educated in the Oral Codes as well as science and the arts.

• An Overseer – He was called the Chazan and also called the Angel (messenger) of the Church (in other words, “Synagogue” there were no Churches then). Revelation 2:1 "Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write;

• 4 but we ourselves will give our full attention to praying and to serving the Word." • They needed to do other things like write the Mishna of their Rabbi, Rabbi Yeshua.

• 5 What they said was agreeable to the whole gathering. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and the Ruach HaKodesh, Philip, Prochoros, Nikanor, Timon, Parmenas and Nicholas, who was a proselyte from Antioch.

Here’s what one commentator says about this verse… “The seven men all have Greek names, indicating that they are probably Hellenists themselves; the people (and the apostles) show great sensitivity to the offended Hellenists by appointing Hellenists to take care of the widows’ distribution.”

This is maddening! The Greeks who were translating the New Testament often used Greek translated names for the people they wrote about. Like “Iesues” for example. “In Greek Jesus’ name is Iesues so obviously Jesus was a Hellenist cause they were better Jews then the Jewish Jews”.
