When Batman Calls…Imagine meeting Batman, your larger-than-life hero, and having him/her ask you to help. What would be your first reaction? Last January one of my heroes put me in that same position. Ruth Messinger, the president of American Jewish World Service (AJWS), came to Temple Shalom

as our scholar-in-residence. A modern day social justice giant, Ruth is my hero for her role as a global force for tikkun olam – addressing the genocide in Darfur, global hunger, and the rights of women, girls and LGBT individuals in the developing world.

During her visit, Ruth encouraged me to participate in the AJWS Rabbinic Fellowship program. Each year AJWS takes a group of rabbis on a mission for global social justice, visiting one of the countries where they are working. At the conclusion of the weekend, Ruth told me I was an ideal candidate, and could really make a difference. My Batman asked me to help!

While flattered, I wondered if I was up to the task. I have been active locally and nationally in social justice work. But in the developing world? This year’s trip was set to visit Kenya. How am I going to make an impact, much less know where to start?

The opportunity was too great to pass up. I applied, and was one of 18 rabbis selected for this year’s program – representing a broad spectrum of denominations, ages, and professional experiences. To

assist our group building process, we started to have long-distance study sessions together, and online video conferences. From these interactions, I learned that other colleagues shared my hesitations about the daunting tasks ahead.

Together we have studied a number of texts. From the texts and ensuing conversations I found the inspiration I needed to embrace this experience of traveling to Kenya. In one article, the author explained that tikkun olam required us to move beyond our comfort zones. If sending a petition on Facebook or forwarding an email about an important issue feels easy, then it is not enough. We all have to push ourselves to do more, if we want to really make a difference. Certainly, accepting a mission to Africa meets this criteria.

Additionally, we looked at one of my favorite texts from Pirke Avot – “It is not your responsibility to finish the work, neither are you free to desist from it.” I don’t have to be a superhero and fix the world in one fell swoop by myself alone. But it is my responsibility to make an effort toward repairing our world. During our visit we will be meeting with local grassroots groups that are addressing the rights of women and LGBT individuals, as well as hunger issues. I will learn their stories, see how they are transforming their communities, and understand how I can advocate on their behalf to further empower their work.

I look forward to sharing more of my journey to Africa with you after my return. Have a summer of blessing and fun!

L’shalom!

From Cantor azu

Nine years ago, I started out on an exciting journey that has changed and shaped my life for the better. Nine years ago, I moved from southern California to Israel for one year to begin my first of five years of study to be a cantor at the Hebrew Union College – Jewish institute of Religions campus in Jerusalem. It was a scary

and exciting time in my life. I was living in a foreign country for the first time and embarking on a new path.

That first year of study was not easy, but it was incredibly rewarding. With my colleagues I studied in the heart of biblical and contemporary Israel, and began my academic journey immersed in Hebrew language and text studies. This experience gave me an intensive encounter with the land, culture, and people of Israel. Not only did my love for Israel and Judaism grow, but my time in Israel gave me the gift of reconnecting with my Israeli family and getting to know them better.

Unfortunately, since that year I have not had the chance to go back and visit. However, now as a cantor, I have the opportunity to go back to Israel this summer with the American Conference of Cantors (ACC) for our annual convention.

Our annual convention moves to different US locations every year. It is an opportunity for cantors to learn from each other, to hear new music, to study with guest scholars, to engage in professional development so that we can meet the new challenges of today’s cantorate, and, of course, to enjoy the company of colleagues who live all over the country. Once every seven years or so, the convention is hosted in Israel to avail ourselves of the experiences and interactions that can only happen there.

I look forward to participating in the incredible programs that will be offered and to sharing my experience with you when I return. May you all have a wonderful and restful summer!

B’shira!

The Journey continues…

It is an honor to continue the journey that the past leadership has begun. The foundation they have provided paves the way for Temple Shalom to be innovative in our approach to delivering services and to offer new opportunities for our

members. As the current president of the Temple, I intend to carry on in forward motion. Temple Shalom has a historic footprint in Southwest Florida. With respect for our past and an eye to our future, we open our doors to all to share, pray, learn and gather as a “family”. A new generation is evolving. It is important that we understand their needs, their goals, and their ways of communicating. Change and transition are inevitable. The activities and functions and programs that are needed may be different from what is being offered. An evaluation needs to be made about what we are doing to make sure we are delivering the outcomes that are expected by all the demographic groups that are part of our One Family.

The process of education, the level of education, and the expectations of the outcomes are being redefined. The delivery methods are changing and the way folks want to learn is evolving. Temple Shalom, as a valuable part of the community, needs to be proactive in these areas.

With the choices that are available to our families today, we want to make sure that Temple Shalom is on the top of the list in all areas of Jewish education, Jewish programming, prayer, and gathering.

The Temple is launching two specific initiatives in the coming weeks. We will be implementing a planned giving program directed to the members of the congregation and its friends. We will also be forming advisory boards for both the religious school and the preschool. It is important that we understand the learning needs of our youth and make sure we are delivering what is needed. These advisory boards are currently being formed to work with the directors of the respective programs. The advisory boards will be overseen by the Rabbi with the assistance of the Cantor.

The One Family Team is dynamic, lively, and active. The Team has been developing plans for Temple Shalom to be a congregation that is based on relationships. With the concepts of Relational Judaism guiding the One Family Team, a set of Action Groups have formed, begun meeting and planning, and are taking steps to implement those plans. For more details read the One Family News article in this issue of the Voice. Again, the Journey continues…

Please contact me at [email protected] for comments and to get involved. Our goal is to engage and connect our people.

President’s messageby Neil Shnider

Our Temple Shalom One Family initiative has been enthusiastically engaged in developing various processes for congregation members to connect with one another. Six Action Groups have been formed and are in various stages of organizing. The Action Groups and their areas of focus are as follows:

Ambassadors – The focus of this group is to establish a group of volunteers who will welcome visitors, develop processes to integrate new members, dialogue with new, current, and exiting members, and develop avenues that will draw current members to participate as members of our Temple family. The existing Membership Committee will be an important part of this Action Group, which will be led by Bobbie Katz ([email protected]).

Shabbat Dinner Action Group – The focus of this Group is to organize a series of Shabbat Dinner and Havdalah events of various sizes, configurations, and locations. The events will provide opportunities for our members to share the Shabbat or Havdalah experience with other members of our Temple family in settings that encourage the development of relationships. Marilyn and Phil Dano ([email protected]) are chairing this Action Group.

One Family Home Action Group – This Group is focusing on our Temple facility, identifying and exploring ways our building can be more conducive to welcoming visitors to Temple and more conducive to relationship development. Judi Palay ([email protected]) is chairing this Action Group.

Affinity Groups Action Group – This group is charged with the development of various interest groups based on demographic, professional, and other areas of similarity. This effort is being developed using the “empty nesters” as a model affinity group. Beth Wolff ([email protected]) and Debbie Zvibleman ([email protected]) are leading this Action Group.

Communications/Technology Action Group – This Group is updating the Temple database and developing social medial venues for Temple. Wendy Reidel ([email protected]) and Alicia Kelley ([email protected]) have taken leadership roles in these areas.

Intergenerational Activities – This Action Group is still in the formation stage. Several people have expressed interest in working with others who wish to develop opportunities for our congregants of varying generations to work together

Our One Family Team has met periodically to develop these plans, establish goals and time-lines, and review and coordinate what each of the Action Groups is doing. The Action Groups are fluid and evolving – new groups can and will be added as needed. Participation is open to all who are interested in being a part of this Temple transformation.

WE WELCOME YOUR INVOLVEMENT!!

If you would like to be part of this exciting initiative, please contact us or any of the Action Group leaders.

What an incredible way to end the school year!

The Lego Jerusalem Program was an educational experience that our children will never forget. It was a day of building, not just Israel, but also our Temple community – and we could not have done it without the help of Temple Shalom’s

Men’s Club! On behalf of the students, teachers and parents, thank you so very much for generously sponsoring another fantastic end-of-the-year program for us.

This has been a year filled with gratitude and thanks…

I am grateful to the incredible Religious School staff for helping to make everything run so smoothly. Our teachers are dedicated, creative and hardworking and theirs is a labor of love. They return year after year to teach the children about our Jewish heritage and celebrations. We are very lucky to have such an elite group of women and men to help nurture and teach our children. It continues to be my privilege to work with each of them.

A big thank you to our 8th through 12th grade madrichim (student assistants). Our students and teachers love having you in class. You are good role models for the younger ones to follow.

A special thanks to my wonderful Office Assistant, Mary Flores. You are a ray of sunshine and a tremendous help to everyone. I am so appreciative of all that you do to assist me.

Todah Rabah to our Sunday office volunteers: Bonnie Karen, Josh Isenberg and Ita Paquette for always lending a helping hand each week.

To our Room Parents – thanks so much for making sure all of our families were well informed of the details and schedules and the many numerous things you do throughout the year and to all of our parents

who helped us with classroom and school-wide programs and events.

Thanks to John Kepsel and your team for all of the set up details and logistics that you make happen so that we run smoothly every week and many thanks to our Administrative Staff: Jo, Maxine and Randi for your organization and attention to details. We are a great team!

Sisterhood and Men’s Club, your continuous commitment to the Religious School’s success and growth are greatly appreciated. It would not be possible to do many of the programs without your generous financial gifts and support each year. The Religious School is very lucky to have you as partners.

Thank you to Yale Freeman and his board members for their continuous support and vision. You understand the importance of providing a Jewish education for our children. I look forward to working with Neil Shnider and his new board this next year.

Cantor Donna Azu and Rabbi Adam Miller - I look forward to continuing to work together as we bring new growth to our temple and school program.

To all the students- you are the reason that I love coming to work every day!

I wish all of our families a safe, fun and restful summer. Here at Temple Shalom, the summer months are spent writing and improving curriculum, creating new programs and most importantly hiring and training teachers for the fall. Teaching our children is a privilege and a wonderful opportunity to pass down our beautiful teachings and traditions of our religion. It is so important that we educate the younger generation because they will explore Judaism’s future. I wish you all a healthy and happy summer. See you in September!!!! Le’Hit-ra-ot!

Shalom!

We will say farewell to our four year olds on May 23rd, with great pride and a bit of sadness as so many of them have been with us for three years. We are pleased that the children are so well prepared to move on to kindergarten. They have been taught phonics and sight word basics

preparing them for a solid reading foundation. Writing journals have been used as a tool to expand the creative process using imaginative thinking and phonetic sound-out words. A basis for math, emphasizing simple addition and subtraction skills have been taught through the use of manipulative and sorting instruments. In science these children have learned measuring, sink and float concepts, and participated in experiments using basic chemistry. Art, cultural studies, geography, current events, and other higher order level teaching have provided our students with knowledge of the world around them. We are proud to say that a majority of our Pre-K students are reading or surpassing

beginning reading, writing and math skills.

Our little ones have grown so big and capable of many things from when they began their preschool journey. This reminds us that time moves very quickly. Each stage of our child’s growth brings wonderful new changes, but we should try to slow down and appreciate what is happening now. Our Temple Shalom Preschool Family is so blessed to have the children and appreciate every moment we are able to be a part in their lives.

So don’t wish away those sleepless nights; be amazed at the stages your child goes through, and enjoy them all. Sit on the floor and play with them, read them a book at night; know that before long they will be able to read to you. Listen to your child tell you about their first day in school. All too soon you will hear about their first day in high school or college. Cherish and love every minute that you have with these little angels!

Sisterhood closed our 2014 season with a home run. We welcomed over 60 women in Bonita Springs at Roy’s Restaurant for a delicious luncheon. Then we were thrilled as Jane Galler and her guitar entertained us at the installation of the new 2014-2016 Sisterhood Board. The new board consists of Executive Vice President,

Debra Antzis; Vice President of Membership, Debbe Faunce; Vice President of Fundraising, Tracey Albert, Vice President of Program, Karen Cohn. Directors, Amanda Dorio and Carole Flegel. Continuing to serve on the Sisterhood Board are: President, Sandy Stone; Corresponding Secretary, Nancy Brother; Treasurer, Fran Nossen; Electronic Communications, Maureen Schaab; Director, Dana Jaffe; and Helen Weinfeld, who Sisterhood could not do without.

We gave out the Volunteer of the Year awards to Helen Weinfeld and Sandy Stone. Tracey Albert served as our efficient MC. After luncheon, we all strolled over to Evelyn and Arthur’s clothing store where our gals shopped to their heart’s content and received 10% off of their purchases. Evelyn and Arthur’s graciously gave 10% off of all of our total purchases to help Temple Shalom and the children of our Religious School.

It was a truly exciting afternoon. We owe a debt of gratitude to our charming, wonderful Sisterhood models who gave of their own time to do a mini fashion show complete with prices and narrated by Heather from Evelyn and Arthur. The models were Elizabeth Feldman, Lisa Mair, Stacy Nicolau and Tracy Ornstein.

Sisterhood has already started to plan a 2014-2015 Season with new innovative, exciting programs suited for congregants and their friends of all ages, for morning, noon and evening. We have had an Executive Board meeting and are planning to have a final complete Sisterhood Board meeting early June to finalize our upcoming season programs.

As I always ask, please call me at 597-1553 if you have any suggestions as to new programs that you would like to see. And don’t forget the tabs of your soda cans to aid the Ronald MacDonald House.

All of us at Sisterhood would like to wish all of you at Temple Shalom a very healthy and happy summer. For those who have gone north, come back to Naples rested and relaxed. To those who remain in Naples, enjoy the lack of traffic and the restaurants where you can now secure a reservation. Prepare to join with Sisterhood in a fantastic, fun and stimulating season full of events!

BOGO NEWSTemple Shalom’s blue bag BOGO program has been a great success due to the participation of our Temple Shalom One Family. We have donated over 225 blue bags of non-perishable foodstuffs since Thanksgiving and 310 mac and cheese boxes from our Purim shpiel. Heather & Jon Front’s 7th graders have diligently helped Harvey & Maxine Brenner on Sunday mornings before class to sort the non-perishables from the bags to boxes to be delivered to the food pantry at JFCS. David Heuer is to be congratulated for making his 7th birthday a celebration & mitzvah by having his friends bring a box of their favorite cereals to be donated to the food pantry. This was truly an act of tikun olam by David and his friends. Let’s all continue to bring in non-perishables that are needed by those suffering with food insecurity in our Collier County community.

or swim in the pool. And the assurance that tomorrow’s care needs

can be managed for you, right here at home. This is retirement

living, enriched and unencumbered – tailored to you.
