    From: the Rabbi...

    Mourning and Celebration

In the United States, Memorial Day is at the end of May. Independence Day does not occur until more than a month later. By the time we get to celebrate our independence as a country, remembering those who gave their lives for our independence is way in the past. The connection between the two is not emphasized. They are treated as two separate entities, two separate holidays.

Not so in Israel. As Jews, I believe one of the reasons we have survived is that we know how to truly memorialize and remember our dead. But in order to be able to go on, we also know how to move forward and celebrate life. Memorial Day (Yom HaZikaron) and Independence Day (Yom HaAtzmaut) are celebrated back to back. On the eve of Memorial Day the flags are lowered to half-staff. There are memorial services throughout the country honoring those who gave their lives so Israel could come to be and continue to exist. The next evening, 24 hours later, flags are raised to full height, and the Independence Day celebration begins.

This transition is very powerful. Living in Israel during my first year of rabbinical school we got to experience this first hand. As we celebrated Israel’s independence, we were still very aware of those who gave their lives for Jews to have a home land. Yet, we also were aware that while we needed to mourn those who sacrificed their lives, we also knew that life goes on and we need to find ways to continue to celebrate all the good that we have. This can be a good lesson for each of us individually. As we experience the losses in our lives, we are challenged to search for the good also.

    Rabbi Michele Brand Medwin, D.Min.

ANNUAL CONGREGATIONAL MEETINGTuesday, May 21 at 7:00 P.M.

AGENDA: Budget Approval, Election of Trustees

Your input is encouragedVIENNESE TABLE FOR YOUR PLEASURE

    Dear Temple Member:

This year, we Jews will begin our 5,780 year.  We lasted this long despite 400 years as slaves in Egypt, 40 years of wandering in the desert. We survived the Romans who nailed us to ten thousand crosses, the efforts of the Crusaders, the Spanish Inquisition, Hitler’s third Reich, Stalin’s gulags, the Arab attempts of annihilation, and hundreds of hate-filled UN  resolutions. We were able to survive by concentrating our efforts on education, love of family, a passionate  dedication to temple life.

As we approach the New Year, our Temple again asks for your financial support. Therefore I am urging each of you to renew your Century Club membership or, if not a member, to please join with us at our annual rate of $100 or more. The names and messages of all members are inscribed each year on the Century Club plaque in the lobby. In order to ensure your inscription, we must have your commitment by the first week in July so that it can be displayed before the High Holy Days beginning September 30.

Very truly yours,                                     Joel Lerner, Chairperson

PRIMETIMERS Next meeting: Monday, May 20, 1:00 PM

As I write this article, I’m thinking about all the packing, phone calls, farewell dinners, the Primetimers, the Temple and Monticello. Our program chairman, Bob Kassman, spent many hours picking out a film for our first meeting. He always picks a winner and I’m sure he has done it again. Our first meeting is Monday May 20th at 1:00 PM at Temple Sholom. We will be showing A Taste of Chanukah, an unusual film featuring 150 musicians from the New England Conservatory of Music and the Boston Community Gospel Choir singing Psalm 27. As always the film will be followed by our lovely collation.

There is still availability on all of our bus trips. The day-on-your-own NYC trips are still only $30/pp and are scheduled for Wednesday, June 19, and Wednesday, August 14. We have a great trip planned for Wednesday, July 17, where we’ll have a guided bus tour of the Chelsea Market, the Meat Packing District, High Line Park, and art galleries. We will have lunch on our own in Chinatown with time for browsing. There are seats available. The donation is $50/pp.

We look forward to the return of our Snowbirds and the get together with our friends from the neighboring Catskill towns. See you May 20th.

Coming in June: All are welcome at services to join Ethan Miros when he becomes a Bar Mitzvah. Ethan will lead services Friday, June 14. He will then lead services and read from the Torah on Saturday morning, June 15, at 10:15 am.Coming in August: Rachel and Tayler Zirt will each become Bat Mitzvah the first weekend in August. Temple Sholom First Night SederOn April 19, 64 people celebrated the First Seder with us. The Rabbi led a beautiful service that was enjoyed by all, and everyone indulged in a delicious meal. This event would never have gone so smoothly and efficiently without the wonderful volunteers.  There are many people I need to thank, and I apologize if I left anyone out. Thank you Anne Paley, Maureen Velten, Helene Perlman, Barbara Zirt with daughters Taylor and Rachel, and Harriet Sticco. Thank you for helping in the kitchen, for setting the tables, for serving the food, and for cleaning up. In addition, I want to thank the Zirt women for making the fruit platter, Helene for making the charoset, Maureen for baking many desserts, Ruth and Bob for boiling and peeling all the eggs, and Fran Greenfield for the chocolate strawberries. Thank you Ira Simon, Michael Zalkin, Brian and Sherry Miros, Howie Perlman, and Harry (Anne Paley’s relative) for the help in serving and cleaning up. It was because of each of these people that the evening went so smoothly and was so well organized. Thanks again everyone for all your help. I couldn’t have done this without all of you.
