Formula in BuddhismThe 18 Vow: #5; King of Vows

You see the formula as below. These are essential items in the formula when we learn theTeaching of Buddha. They go as follows:

1. To Learn Buddhism is to learn myself,2. to learn myself is to learn Buddha’s Compassion.3. to learn Compassion is to forget myself,4. and to forget myself is to throw me into Buddha’s World.

The 18th Vow“If, when I attain Buddhahood, the sentient beings of the 10 quarters who, with sincereand entrusting heart, aspire to be born in my land and say my name even 10 times, shouldnot be born there, may I not attain the perfect enlightenment. Excluded are those whocommit the five grave offenses and those who slander the right Dharma.”

Words:1. Sentient being of the 10 quarters: Sentient being = you and me2. Sincere heart: The heart generated by Wisdom of Buddha.3. Entrusting heart: The heart generated by Compassion of Buddha.4. Aspire to be born in my land: The future direction of my life.5. Even 10 times: As long as my life lasts, even if very short, recitation is essential.6. Five grave offenses: Those who commit offenses such as (1) murder father, (2)

murder mother, (3) murder Bodhisattvas, (4) murder Buddha, (5) destroy harmony in sangha.7. Slander the right Dharma: False spoken statements related to Mahayana

Teaching.

Five grave offenses & slandererWhy do we see these at the end of the vow? The reasons are as follows:

- A person’s thoughts are rooted in his own desires and blind passions. Theperson is depending on a false foundation in life.

- A person’s thoughts are simply his own thoughts and ideas. So the person doesnot recognize his twisted and distorted views.

- A person doesn’t care morals and ethics.- Since the contents of this vow are different from Theravada Buddhism which is

omainly for priests and ministers, Buddha emphasizes the importance ofCompassion in Mahayana Buddhism which embraces any kind of quality ofbeings.

- Buddha wants us to find the right direction in life and to build a right foundationin life.

Thus, these “don’ts” are to guide people to build the right foundation. Specifically, rightfoundation means right view (causation, cause-condition) and essence of MahayanaBuddhism (Wisdom as cause, Compassion as condition). In Gassho, Rev. Fujii

for ordinary people to encounter the Buddha andShinran found that for himself, this was correct. Thenumerous hymns that he wrote over the course of hislifetime were his own expressions of gratitude thatcame from his heart/mind meeting with the Buddha.He realized that the Buddhas, sages and greatteachers were among the ‘true friends’ that he hadencountered and all were responsible in some wayfor his awakening. This month as we celebrateGotan-e, we can consider all of those ‘true friends’that have brought us to encounter the teachings (withShinran counted among that number) and respond ingratitude with Namo Amida Butsu.

Hello everyone, welcome to May! This month weare celebrating Gotan-e or the birthday of ourfounder, Shinran Shonin. Obviously, this is animportant day for Jodo Shinshu Buddhists because itis a day for us to reflect on Shinran’s life andteachings which consist of a) awakening to one’sown foolish self and b) gratitude to all past causesand conditions that have helped us to come to thatawakening. The quote above is taken from theLarger Sutra and makes reference to ‘my truefriend’, a term denoting a person of shinjin (sincereheart and mind) who will help to guide us to our ownawakening. It also expresses a strong sense ofgratitude to the person or persons through whomone has been able to encounter and awaken to theteaching. Shinran wrote many hymns of gratitude toall those whom he considered to be his ‘truefriends’- everyone from the Buddha to the greatsages of the past and his own personal teacher,Honen Shonin. Through study of the sutras and theworks of the sages, Shinran encountered theBuddha and Dharma academically but he eventuallyhit a wall. This was his encounter with his small,foolish self. Feeling that his study alone was notsufficient to encounter the Buddha with sincere heartand mind, he sought out Honen and through him,found the heart/mind connection with the Buddhathat he had been seeking. Honen encouraged therecitation of Namo Amida Butsu as the true means

Although this issue comes out in the delightful warmingof Spring, I need to take us back to early March and thankCal Kato and Gary Matsuda for shoveling snow and de-icing the front walks and courtyard.

Thank you to everyone and especially the ministers fortaking on “extra” tasks while office worker, Donna Inouye,enjoyed a journey to Japan to meet her new grandson.

息子の友人二人がやってきた。初めての場所ということで近くを案内すること

にした。車で二三の場所を回っていると、一人は「美しい所ですねー」とか「あ

あ、楽しいなあー」と海や山を見ながら連発する。ところがもう一人はどうも浮

かぬ顔をしている。何処へ行っても、何を見ても、何を食べても、つまらなさそ

うな顔をして黙っている。

「どうしました？」と問うと「このあと大切な試験が待っているんです。結構

難しい科目なので心配でならないんです」と言う。その試験さえ無事に通れば日

本での就職も将来も安心となるとのこと。片や、心底から嬉しそうにしているも

う一人にきいた。「あなたは随分とたのしそうですね」と。「ええ、私は科目も

試験もすべて終了しました。あとは日本で決まっている会社に就職するだけで

す」と。心は実に軽やかで不安も心配もない。二人の心は真反対なのだと知った。

山は山だ。海は海だ。ところが心の在りよういかんでその山や海を見ると違っ

て見える。心に心配や不安があれば何を見ても、何をしても、何を食べても、い

よいよつまらない。空は晴れているが、心は曇っていると行く先々で出会うもの

は面白くも可笑しくもない。逆に心が晴れていれば、何もかもが嬉しく感じられ

て実に楽しい時間となる。一人は「お通夜気分」。もう一人は「宴会気分」だ。

仏法に「六道輪廻（ろくどう・りんね）」という言葉がある。地獄、餓鬼、畜

生、阿修羅（あしゅら）、人間、天人の六つをいう。意味するところは、怒りで

満ちた心（地獄）、貪りで満ちた心（餓鬼）、愚痴で満ちた心（畜生）、不安や

恐れで満ちた心（阿修羅）、平常心（人間）、そして喜びで満ちた心（天人）を

日々繰り返している我々の心の相（すがた）を示す。

この六道輪廻の本意は、大切な仏法に接する時には「平常心でいなさいよ」と

教えていること。大切なものを聞くとき、心に怒りや心配があっては「まともに

聞けないですよ」ということ。

では「平常心」とはどのような心の在り様なのだろうか。「ああ、ご飯がうま

いなー」との心であり、「ああ、昨晩は良く眠ったなー」との心であり、「寺に

行って仏法を聞こう」との心である（笑）。簡単そうに聞こえるが、我々は日々

これができそうで、中々できないのではなかろうか。己の心の在り様にばかされ

て大切な何かを逃してはいないだろうか。

つまらなそうにしている一人にそんな話をしたら「心の在り様ですか。本当に

そうだと思います」とうなずいていた。「万物はこれ、心の在り様で決まる」と

は「唯識（ゆいしき）」という仏教の学問分野だが、人類は心の問題を見逃すこ

となく学問体系にまでまとめ上げた。人間は随分心で悩まされたことが知れる。

Be a Dharma SchoolTeacher!

It’s not too early to givethought to becoming aDharma School teacher forfall 2014-spring 2015. (Andcurrent teachers, will yoube returning next year? Wecertainly hope so!)

Our Dharma School giveskids age 2 to 18 (orthereabouts) a foundationin Jodo Shinshu Buddhismand guidance and supportthat they’ll refer tothroughout their lives.Younger students learnthrough stories, crafts, andgames while classes forolder kids may incorporateSocratic discussion, currentevents, and communityoutreach. Classes are heldmost Sundays fromSeptember through Maydownstairs in the temple.

Our needs for DharmaSchool change from year toyear, but we always needsubstitute teachers andwelcome help with classprojects and DharmaSchool event. If you thinkyou’d like to commit to thefull school year, please talkto Michelle Asakawa orNaomi Nguyen, the currentsuperintendents.

Due to a change in thecartridges recyclingprogram, the DharmaSchool will no longer beparticipating in theprogram. We will recyclewhat we do have alreadyat the temple, but pleasedon’t bring any moreused cartridge in. Wethank everyone whobrought ink cartridges inover the past years!

As you should know by previous newsletters, we arerecording stories and historical facts of familiessupplemented by a story-line and connected with yourTemple. If you do not submit something, a greatopportunity for a family record will be lost.

It’s important, and it’s easy - just put down some highlevel biological sketch of your collective family includingwhen the family got started in Colorado and then add howyour family and you became involved with the Temple.Include experiences and memories and what it has meantto you, and perhaps your hopes for the future. In this way,your grandkids (if applicable) etc. will have something topoint to in the future. You should be able to write anaccount in a day or so.

We’d like to give you this chance to record your shortstory in a book or, alternatively, in a digital formataccessible to you. Include pictures with your short story.

On May 18, 2014, Tri-State/Denver Buddhist Templeis holding an INFANT PRESENTATION CEREMONY(HATSUMAIRI).

At this ceremony, infants are formally presented tothe Buddha and the Sangha; the parents of each infantmake a solemn vow to help guide their child in his/herspiritual growth. A Buddhist name is NOT given at thisceremony. This ceremony is for those infants whoseparents want to set a basic foundation in which tocultivate the Teachings of the Buddha.

The Infant Presentation Ceremony will be held inconjunction with the Denver Buddhist Temple Gotan EService (birthday of Shinran Shonin).

Please register by calling the temple office bySunday, May 4, 2014 (all applicants must pre-register).Non-temple members, please pay a $20 registrationfee. There is no registration fee for temple members,however, this occasion provides a wonderfulopportunity to make a donation to the Eitaikyo Fund.

Hatsumairi Ceremony

On behalf of the TS/DBT Board, Joni and I would liketo take this opportunity to thank each and every oneof you who came out with your cleaning supplies onClean-up Sunday to help get our Temple into ship-shape. With everyone’s help and hard work, we wereable to accomplish a lot. We were able to clean,reorganize, and purge years of unused items! Manyof those things got recycled and donated for reuse. Aspecial shout out of thanks should go to GaryMatsuda, our new facilities manager, and his helper,Joe, for performing the heavy lifting and the cartingout of the recyclables. Thank you to DBT Aikido, DBTJudo, and Denver Taiko for bringing out all of theitems out of the back apartment, weeks ahead of thecleanup, so that it could be sorted and relocated inpreparation for our new nokotsudo (columbarium).And a very special thanks to Jon Campbell, AmyYoshimura, and our YBA for their willingness to alwaysbe there to help with the grunt work whenever weask. So to all of you, our Sangha, thank you for all ofyour hard work!If you have not been in the Temple kitchen lately,please stop and check out our new gas range andconvection oven. It was a very generous gift to ourTemple from the BWA and Dharma School. The

kitchen is probably one of the most used areas of ourTemple just second to the Hondo. How many bakesales, Keiro Kais, manjus, Sakura Matsuri food andprep, and food fundraisers have been made in thiskitchen? So many that we couldn’t even begin tocount. But with this very special donation by our BWAand Dharma School, all of our jobs will be madeeasier with the upgrade of the appliances. Thank youBWA and Dharma School!

In the March/April 2014 Newsletter, we made a pleafor videos/movies/clips that you may have to help usproduce a new video highlighting historic milestonesand other events related to the Tri-State BuddhistTemple. We’d like to include your entries.

This is a second request urging you to get down intoyour basements or other places you may have storedthese precious moments. This project will take someextra effort on your part to find what we need. Weknow that most people tend to put things off, orsubconsciously say that searching is too much trouble.Please, we want you to take that extra effort to dig outthese videos and movies. They are surely out therewaiting to be rediscovered.

Any format will be accepted: Super 8, 8 mm, VHS,camcorder, digital camera recordings, iPad andSmartPhone recordings, etc. We will return youroriginals.

Examples for your movies and videos include: picnics,bon-odoris, Sakura Matsuri, parades, dances, SunshineTrips, Hanamatsuri programs, Boy/Girl Scouts,bowling, golf, baseball, plays (shibais),groundbreaking, Cherry Blossom plantings, weddings,choir, reunions, or other family events that may haveoccurred at the Temple, etc. Past and current eventsare welcomed.

Please join us here at the temple for evening dharma discussions. We will cover topics such as AmidaBuddha and the Pure Land, basic temple etiquette, onaijin objects and other concepts related to Jodo

Shinshu Buddhism. We would also like to encourage participants to bring in their own questions and topics

in order to keep the discussions lively and relevant .
