Rabbi’s Message:

Mordechai and Esther — we love you, yeah, yeah, yeah! Haman — boo! On Friday, March 2, we performed a Beatles Purimspiel. It was great fun and we will perform it again next year. The lyrics were clever. The musicianship was fantastic. The “not ready for purim time players” rocked the Beatles tunes with aplomb and sang

on key (most of the time). Todah rabbah to John, Paul, George, and Ringo for their music. And todah rabbah to our musicians: Rachel Eisenberg, Shaun Friedman, Nella Kamerman, Mark Siegel, Andy Silverman, and the Shushan Super Fan aka Rabbi Matt. We will not do a nationwide tour, but we will be back at TINT next spring. The band looks to double in size and volume. Join us. The Purim Palooza Fundraiser on Sunday, March 4 was great fun and raised funds for our tuition-free religious school. Todah rabbah to the entire committee for their efforts and everyone who helped. Look for details on pages 10 and 11. Pesach reminds us spring is almost here. We will have an early Shabbat Service, Friday, March 30 at 5:30. The service will be 30 minutes long. We will gather for a few prayers of gratitude, the healing prayer, and Kaddish. Please avail yourself of the opportunity to attend our congregational seder on Saturday evening. Encour-age those “in recovery” to attend our Sober Seder on Sunday. See all of the perti-nent information on pages 5 and 6 of this IsraeLight. Yom Hashoah will be commemorated, 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 11 at Park Synagogue - Main. The full name of the day commemorating the victims of the Holocaust is “Yom Hashoah Ve-Hagevurah”— in Hebrew literally the “Day of (remembrance of) the Holocaust and the Heroism.” It is marked on 27 Nisan — a week after the end of the Passover holiday and a week before Yom Hazikaron (Memorial Day for Israel's fallen soldiers). It marks the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising. (April 19 - May 19, 1943) Yom Ha-atzmaut, Israel’s Independence Day was May 14, 1948 (5 Iyar 5708). According to the Hebrew calendar, Israel’s 70th Independence Day will fall Wednesday night, April 18, 2018. There will be a Cleveland community celebra-tion — see our pamphlet tower. Here at TINT, we will have a special Oneg Shab-bat on Friday, April 20, followed by our annual Parade on Sunday morning, April 22. Join our Yom Ha-atzmaut Parade through the temple neighborhood. Step-off will be 9:30 a.m. The one-mile parade will be led by a Mayfield Heights Police Motorcycle. We will walk slowly, wave flags and sing songs. We hope to have a couple of convertibles for those who cannot walk the parade route. Call me if you have such a vehicle. Absolutely everyone is invited to participate. If it is raining, we will celebrate inside our shul. As with every year, these are challenging times for Israel and for the entire Jewish people. Too often, Israel is delegitimized on college campuses and in cocktail par-ty conversations. I hope it is only because such people do not know the history. If they knew the history, they would have a natural support for Israel. Here are some important historical factors you might “work into” conversation. Jerusalem has stood at the center of the Jewish people’s national and spiritual life since King David made it the capital of his kingdom in 1003 BCE. The city re-mained the capital of the Davidic dynasty for 400 years, until the kingdom was

From the President’s Desk

By Richard Freedman

Recently I attended Shabbat services at the oldest continuously operating synagogue in the Western Hemisphere. It’s located in the island nation of Curaçao. Lynda and I had visited the synagogue earlier in the week. We were greeted by a security officer. Even in this little slice of heaven, we Jews must be vigilant. As we approached the guard I said, “Shalom”. A big smile came over his face. There are about 200 Jewish families left on the island. Most of the children of the retired shop owners and businessmen have become educated in the US and taken their degrees and brainpower to permanently reside in the States or in Europe. But we are, in the words of Bob Marley, One Heart. The Jews here wel-come their fellow Jews with open arms and big hearts. This made me think about the children of our generation. Do they appreciate what it means to be Jewish? Do they understand that Judaism is not a religion at odds with science, rather it is a religion aligned with learning and thought? Do they feel the kinship with Jews the world over the way we do? Is it important to them that they continue our civilization? Are our children metaphorically leaving Judaism behind as the young Jews have abandoned Curaçao? I know two twenty-something Jews who are to be married this summer but who don’t want a Rabbi or Cantor to perform the ceremony. Why? Have we educated our children in the ways of the world but not in the love of our faith and our people? Why is it so difficult to recruit these 20-to-40-year-olds to become members of any synagogue, let alone ours? The joy of seeing a Jew succeed, whether as an athlete, scholar, politician, actor, or businessman thrills me. The pride I feel that we Jews, disproportionately to our population, make up Congress, Nobel Prize winners, and successful entre-preneurs is seemingly not duplicated among our young. I feel a little like Roseanne Roseannadana’s pen pal, Mr. Richard Fador. I’ve asked a lot of questions. We need the answers from our children in order to continue our great tradition. If you’ve got some thoughts, please email them to me at [email protected]. So many exciting things are happening at our synagogue; Men’s Torah Study, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Torah, Purim Palooza, Second Seder, Sober Seder, in addition to our weekly Shabbat celebration, I’m sure I will see you somewhere soon. Don’t forget to bring your adult children and grandchildren. So, let’s get together and feel alright.

Shalom to all. One of the main goals of our children's education at TINT is to provide exponential learning opportunities for ALL students and families. We are doing it in the classrooms, as a group and with holidays and family-oriented programs. Some of the highlights are: 1) A lavish Seder for Tu B'Shvat - with reading, singing, blessing and all the symbolic juice and food fixing! 2) As we prepare for Israel’s 70th anniversary, we viewed the movie, " In Search of Israeli Cuisine", that was followed by "Israeli style" food sampling. As we explored the dishes served in Israeli homes and restaurants, we got to "tour" the land of milk and honey from the comfort of our sanctuary. 3) Just prior to Purim, we enjoyed and learned so much during two programs by talented Israeli actor Amichai Pardo. He portrayed Yanush Korchack and Theodor Herzel in two fun, interactive, yet educational performances. We enjoyed "Purim Palooza" on March 4th, where your support made a major difference for our school. Our students will lead a Model Seder on March 25th, and as always, you are invited to join us! In our prayers sessions, we are starting to prepare our students to lead a congregational service in May. In prep of Israel's 70th Independence Day celebration, we are also adding Israeli folk dancing sessions in March and April. It was a hit among our students last year; we discovered we had great talent here. Let the celebrations begin with a song and a dance!

From Our Education Director Continued from page 4

Our older grade students are starting to plan with us a day trip on Sunday, May 6th to discover Jewish Pittsburgh. More details will follow. Special thanks and appreciation goes to the dedicated Rabbi, teachers and staff who enhance and contribute so much to and for our children! As we explore more fun, educational and culture-based learning for our students in all grade levels, let us not forget that the Jewish people have been practicing exceptional education for millennia, long before it was trendy. As we teach our children the beauty and wisdom of our tradition, we also remind them of the core of our religion: We need always to step forward and take action whenever we see suffering and injustice in the world. We have a special obligation to look out for fellow Jews and to defend our people. At the same time, we have an equal obligation to stand up for compassion and justice toward all people. With the Joyous holiday of Purim behind us and as we approach Pesach (Passover) - the holiday of freedom - let's stand up for compassion and justice. It's a mitzvah!

Best wishes to you and your family for a meaningful Pesach.

For millennia, while non-Jewish dynasties ruled ancient Judea, they never declared Jerusalem their capital.

In 1920, following the defeat of the Turks, the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, and the peace conferences after World War I, the British Mandate for Palestine was created by the League of Nations. The Mandate was international recognition for the stated purpose of “establishing in Palestine a national home for the Jewish people.”

Over the next 28 years, the British administered the Mandate from Jerusalem. On No-vember 29, 1947, the United Nations passed General Assembly Resolution 181 which sought to divide Palestine into two states — one Arab and one Jewish. Jerusalem was to be designated an international city administered by the U.N. The Jewish community was not entirely satisfied with the partition plan; however, we accepted the plan. The Arab League and Arab Higher Committee were not entirely satisfied with the partition plan and rejected it.

At midnight, Jerusalem time, on May 14, 1948, the Provisional Government of Israel pro-claimed the new State of Israel. The United States announced its recognition only 11 minutes later, thus becoming the first country to recognize the new state. We gratefully acknowledge President Harry Truman.

Immediately, Israel was attacked by the armies of Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Iraq. Miraculously, Israel won the war, although Jordan captured the eastern portion of Jerusalem, thus dividing the city. In June 1967, during the Six Day War, Israel reunified Jerusalem as her capital city.

Throughout her turbulent history, Israel has sought to negotiate peace treaties with her Arab neighbors. Israel successfully negotiated a peace treaty with Egypt in 1979, and a peace treaty with Jordan in 1994. Most Israelis are ready to make peace, and live along-side a Palestinian state, as long as the Palestinians behave peacefully.

Do you remember when Israel, in September 2005, forcibly removed all the Israelis liv-ing in Gaza? Many of us watched on live television. Israel left in the hopes that the Pal-estinians would be peaceful neighbors. The Palestinians in Gaza elected Hamas as their government and Hamas consistently launched rockets into southern Israel.

As a result in 2009, to protect the children of Sederot, the Jewish National Fund built a playground bomb shelter. It only takes 14 seconds for a rocket to travel from Gaza to Sederot. Our religious school children donated to the JNF to help the children of Se-derot. A few months ago (December 2017), on our congregational trip to Israel, we toured the playground bomb shelter. It is an engineering marvel which is an indoor recre-ation center with a rock climbing wall, computer lab and indoor soccer field. We were moved by the reception we received and gratified to know our congregation has been helpful in protecting Israel’s children. In August 2014, the IDF launched Operation Protective Edge after 4,594 rockets and mortars had been launched toward Israel. Now, there is an unofficial cease-fire between Israel and Hamas. Israel continues to search for serious negotiating partners among the Palestinians and others within the Arab and Muslim world. Almost 4,000 years ago, God said to Abraham, “I assign the land you sojourn in to you and your offspring to come, all the land of Canaan, as an everlasting holding. I will be

____________&____________

Rabbi’s Message, from page 15 their God.” (Genesis 17: 8) Because of this divine promise our ancient ancestral homeland is known as “The Promised Land.” It is also of importance to note there have been three Jewish states over the millennia in “The Promised Land.” The first kingdom existed 1,000-586 BCE. The second kingdom endured from 538-63 BCE. The modern State of Israel exists from 1948 until the present day. The British had a central role in Palestine and worked to settle disputes between Jews and Arabs. The British also worked to settle disputes between Hindus and Moslems in India. In 1947, the British Parliament partitioned India and Pakistan. This made Pakistan an independent Moslem state. As a question of logic, should not those who have problems with the existence of Israel as a Jewish state, also have issues with the existence of Pakistan as a Moslem state? Yes, they should. However, it is rare to meet a person even familiar with the year and circumstances of Pakistan’s independence. There are 49 countries with a Moslem majority population. There is 1 country with a Jewish majority population. Let Mos-lems live peacefully within those countries, and all other countries in which they live, and live peacefully with the one, and only, Jewish majority country in the world — Israel. That would be a great present for Israel and the rest of the world. As you may have heard, the State Department has announced that the United States plans to open a new U.S. Embassy in Jeru-salem with a dedication ceremony on May 14, 2018, which will coincide with Israel’s 70 anniversary. Let us be grateful to live in this country. Let us express appreciation that our government has affirmed Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. May you be blessed with a joyous Pesach with family and friends in health, happiness, prosperity and peace. Kol tuv (all the best) and shalom,
