This past summer, I fulfilled a dream of many years of visiting Spain. A thousand years ago, in the cities and kingdoms of Granada, Seville, Cordoba, and Toledo, the Jewish people enjoyed a period of integration and prosperity we have not seen until modern times. The Jewish community in Spain, the home of Sephardic Judaism, was ultimately eradicated by the expulsion decree of 1492, scattering the Jewish people across North Africa, Southern Europe, Turkey, and Israel.
What was amazing to me, wandering the old Jewish quarters, is that by and large there is no remnant remaining of what were extraordinarily vibrant centers of Jewish life. One can wander the Jewish quarters of
Granada, Cordoba, and Seville, but find little if any trace of where we lived or what we built.
But what was more amazing to me was our visit to the Jewish quarter of Girona, a city two hours north of Barcelona. Girona once boasted one of the largest Jewish communities in northeastern Spain. The only remains of the Jewish quarter are iron posts that once held the gate to the community, and an excavation that revealed a Jewish house. There is a small museum of Jewish life on the site, that explains to visitors what Judaism is, and the
history of our people there. And coursing through the air in the little museum were the sounds of modern Hebrew from the groups of Israeli tourists who had found their way there.
There was something sublime in hearing the sounds of modern Hebrew in the Jewish quarter of Girona. The community is gone, but not our people. The life our people knew in Spain is gone, but our memory is not. Our people were tormented, persecuted, tortured, and killed, but we remain, transplanted, and flourishing.
The Jewish people have survived through the years because we were willing to create new realities in new places. Despite the anguish and loss that
comes from leaving behind old paradigms, our ability to embrace new beginnings while never abandoning tradition and covenant is what enables us to thrive.
This is what God demands of us as Jews, physically and spiritually. We are a people that simultaneously lives in the past and the present. We delve deep into Torah because embedded in the ancient words is timeless holy wisdom that we need to guide us today. At the same time, we adapt and integrate the truths and ideals we learn in dialogue, not simply with each other, but with the other cultures and peoples among whom we live.
Temple Beth El is embracing many new beginnings. We welcome Rabbi Greg Weisman
and our new Cantorial Soloist Lawrence Dermer, along with their families to our congregation and community. We look forward to weaving their new insights, new ideas, and new perspectives into the quality of Jewish life at Temple Beth El. Our Maimonides Institute for Jewish Learning continues to explore new structures and programs to make Jewish education ever more engaging. The implementation of our congregation’s strategic plan will require us to change and adapt to new ways of thinking about our congregation, but will help us continue to be the most compelling center of Jewish life we can be.
Ultimately, each of us needs these holy days to inspire us to new beginnings, to reorient our compasses and reevaluate our values and priorities to make better choices and pursue a more meaningful life.
The Golden Age of Spain has passed into history, but the golden age of the Jewish people, our congregation, and each of us individually, we pray, is just beginning.
Renewal
Despite the anguish and loss that comes from leaving behind old paradigms,
our ability to embrace new beginnings while never abandoning tradition and covenant
is what enables us to thrive.

NEw YEAR, NEw TECHNOLOgYBy St e v e K a u f m a n
Technology plays an ever increasing role in our daily lives. Virtually all commerce now involves computers, and wireless technology continues to expand its influence on how we communicate, how we conduct business
and how we gather information. And while many of us turn to Temple Beth El on Shabbat to pause and escape our daily multimedia overexposure, the truth is that behind the scenes TBE is heavily reliant on technology for our operations.
TBE recently introduced a number of improvements to our technology platform, allowing us to operate more efficiently and serve you better. These include:
A brand new website (www.tbeboca.org) which is simpler than our prior website and incorporates a more streamlined member account login, donation navigation, and more robust event calendar functionality.
Expanded wi-fi access in the Social Hall, Atrium and Member Lounge at the Main Campus and the Member Lounge and Multi-
purpose classrooms at the Beck Family Campus.
Elimination of all paper timesheets and vacation request forms for employees. Now paid time off is requested on-line, and digital time clocks at both campuses record time for our hourly employees.
New custom-built Mausoleum inventory and sales software replaces the manual collection and recording of all sales information and unsold inventory.
The Temple now accepts American Express (AMEX) via pre-authorized monthly charges, via telephone to arrange a payment, or on-line via our new website.
Finally, the new bylaws which went into effect on July 1st changed the name of the “Building and Operations Committee” to the “Facilities and Technology Committee” to demonstrate an emphasis on the importance of technology for the future of the Temple.
We thank our technology partners, forte interactive, our web design company specializing in the needs of non-profit organizations, and pJ techtronics, inc. which provides on-going support for all of our technology needs.

New BeginningsAs we enter the time of the New Year we try to reflect on those personal ideas that we want to experience and accomplish in the year to come. There are things that we do not want to carry into the new year so we push them aside and start our NEW BEGINNINGS. Whether it is being more compassionate to others, volunteering for a charity, losing or gaining weight, establishing a new interest or a combination of all, we can start fresh at Rosh Hashanah.
At Temple Beth El we also have new beginnings. This summer we welcomed two new members of our clergy, Rabbi Greg Weisman and Cantorial Soloist Lawrence Dermer. We have also begun the
implementation of our new strategic plan. We voted on and passed the new by-laws which outline the new governance structure of our temple. Although some people find change difficult, the excitement that has been shown by you, our congregation, ensures that we are headed in the right direction. Your support and dedication are invaluable to us so we can continue to develop new programs, new leaders, and NEW BEGINNINGS!
Louis and our family join me in wishing you all a very happy and healthy New Year!

When you ask women what they want, they are likely to say “I just want to be happy.” But, what does it really mean to be happy? We lead such busy lives
that we often don’t take the time to think about this important question. In this interactive presentation Dr. Paula Bloom will create a space for you to explore what happiness is and provide tools
to overcome the obstacles that keep us from living a happier and more balanced life. Dr. Paula Bloom is a practicing clinical psychologist, speaker, frequent mental health and relationship expert on the CNN networks and co-author of Why Does He Do That? Why Does She Do That? Two Relationship Experts Reveal the Naked Truth About Dating in the 21st Century. She has contributed blogs to PBS’s This Emotional Life and The Huffington Post and has been featured in Glamour, Cosmopolitan, Woman’s Day, Beliefnet and Dr. Sanjay Gupta›s blog on CNN.com. once we were brothers, By ronaLD H. BaLSonSunday, September 29, 2013(Beck family campus, 10:00 am – 11:30 am)Elliot Rosenzweig, a wealthy Chicago philanthropist, is attending opening night at the opera when Ben Solomon, a retired Polish immigrant, approaches and shoves a gun in Rosenzweig’s face, denouncing him as former SS officer, Otto Piatek. The story reveals that Rosenzweig and Piatek grew up as brothers in the same household. Once We Were Brothers is a contemporary legal thriller and a poignant look back. start-up nation, By Dan Senor anD SauL SIngerSunday, December 8, 2013(tBe main campus, 10:00 am – 11:30 am)Start-Up Nation addresses the trillion dollar question: How is it that Israel – a country of 7.1 million, only 60 years old, surrounded by enemies, in a constant state of war since its founding, with no natural resources—produces more start-up companies than large, peaceful, and stable nations like Japan, China, India, Korea, Canada, and the UK?
by blood, By eLLen uLLmanSunday, february 2, 2014(Beck family campus, 10:00 am – 11:30 am)It is 1974, a time when free love and psychedelic ecstasy have given way to drug violence and serial killings. Through the thin walls of a rented office space in San Francisco, a professor overhears the sessions of a therapist and a patient, and without knowing the patient’s name or face he comes to know the details of her life, her family, and her lovers. He inserts himself into her search for her “mysterious origins”, a deeply troubling journey through displaced-persons camps, stolen children and hidden pasts.
the short, strange life of herschel grynszpan: a boy avenger, a nazi diplomat, and a murder in paris By JonatHan KIrScH (with author Jonathan Kirsch via skype)Sunday, april 27, 2014 (tBe main campus, 10:00 am – 11:30 am)On the seventy-fifth anniversary of Kristallnacht comes this untold story of a seventeen-year-old Jewish refugee, Herschel Grynszpan whose act of defiance has dire international consequences. In a bizarre concatenation of events involving Ribbentrop, Goebbels, and Hitler himself, Grynszpan becomes the centerpiece of a Nazi propaganda campaign that would later describe his actions as “the first shot of the Jewish War.”

I can’t remember one specific event that triggered my interest in Green issues. Over time, I have implemented changes with regard to how I shop, clean my house and what I serve my family and am always looking for ways for our family to be greener.
I discovered that there is an emerging green layer of living. It’s like a city unto itself with its own terminology and symbols (USDA, sustainability,
nonrenewable, NON GMO). This city is made up of individuals, programs, businesses and organizations that help us reduce our trash impact (terracycle, freecycle, reuseit.com), save fresh water (reclaimed water programs, leak detection week, rain harvesting), and even empower Jewish organizations with ideas about saving energy and water and reducing trash in our homes and synagogues (COEJL, Hazon, Jewcology,). We are excited to take part in bringing our Jewish community together in an effort to protect what G-d has created for future generations.

As I begin my second year in the Cantorial Certification program at Hebrew Union College I look forward to an exciting year of study with the colleagues I’ve bonded with this past year. We are all Cantorial Soloists who have been serving our congregations as the Cantor for at least five years. This year, we study liturgy, Mishnah, both classical and contemporary musical repertoire, Music Education, and Pastoral training. I must admit that at times my head is spinning – trying to absorb all of this information while working full time. But the access of my Rabbis and Cantors, in the program keep me motivated and on track. There are also Skype sessions where we study as chevruta – partners in learning - and once a week I am coached online with a wonderful Cantor from California.
My year culminates with six weeks in Jerusalem, immersed in Hebrew Ulpan and studying the history and repertoire of Israeli music. Thank you to my TBE family for your support and encouragement on this road to becoming your Cantor!

this is a very exciting and busy time for youth engagement at tBe. this year, there are several new programs to offer our students.
the 6th grade students will have their very own overnight retreat on December 14-15th. the overnight will connect students from both campuses for a night of fun, education, and socialization. all tBe members who are in 6th grade are invited to attend.
another addition is a trip for 9-12th grade students, geared towards those who have an interest in social activism. Participants will head to the
religious action center in Washington Dc for a 3 day seminar to learn about lobbying for social change. this seminar is attended by thousands of reform Jewish teens and has a lasting impact on the participants. the rac L’taken Seminar will take place march 21-24th, 2014.
In addition to the new programs, temple Beth el’s High School youth group, bofty, has been chosen as the host of this year’s nfty-Str fall Kallah (Weekend retreat) october 11-13th, 2013. the Bofty teens plan the weekend from beginning to end, including all programming, Shabbat services, and social
activities for over 400 teens from nfty’s Southern tropical region (Str). fall Kallah is not only for the teens, but for adults as well. there are many ways that the tBe congregants can be involved. FuLFILLINg THE promisein 2005, our congregation embarked upon a plan to create a new future for temple beth el. The Building Tomorrow Today capital campaign enabled us to build our beloved Beck Family Campus in west Boca, embracing the growth of the Jewish community to the west and north. unfortunately, because of the severe recession that affected so many of us at that time, we were unable to complete all of the planned enhancements, particularly those at the Main Campus.
the first step in this process is to undertake a feasibility study, and for this purpose we have engaged the services of J.S. Friedman, Inc., a well known fundraising firm with over 40 years of experience working with synagogues across the country. From September through November 2013, Mr. Friedman’s company will be interviewing approximately 70 families in the congregation, representing a cross-section of our TBE family. The feasibility study will conclude at the end of November with a full report to the Board of Trustees prior to Chanukah.
today, guided by our new strategic plan, and a renewed vision for our future, we must decide how best to complete our vision and fulfill the promises we made during Building Tomorrow Today.
We look forward to sharing the results of the feasibility study with the entire congregation by January, 2014.

Social GatherinG for aDultS in their 20’S & 30’S
New beginnings are loaded with expectation and trepidation. At this High Holy Day season, I look inward to review the good and the bad of the past year and evaluate it in the context of improving my outlook and attitude. Personal growth is difficult and requires discipline to keep objectives clear and present. For me, the solemn beauty of this season and my aspirations for the year to come are represented by our clergy during this holy month. If my hand does not extend to you first at services, please reach out to me so we may wish each other the best for the coming year.
I am very excited to be the incoming president of TBE’s Sisterhood. This is a vibrant organization that performs amazing works of charity. Since I joined the Sisterhood board as treasurer in 2007, we have seen an increased enthusiasm and support for WRJ. I credit Lisa Zwick, Gail Cohen, Jan Lev, and Margie Plough as prior Presidents and their supportive boards for these wonderful
achievements.Being a member of Sisterhood means a lot to me. These
ladies have become a real source of friendship, guidance and support. I often volunteer at events and although it seems like I am helping them, in reality, I am receiving much more than I am giving. Sisterhood is a great opportunity for me to use my creativity, to enjoy friends and to make a difference in the community all at the same time.
We already have an exciting schedule of events planned for this year. We will be cooking for Family Promise and creating handmade toys for children in distress. We also have fabulous guest speakers including a regular CNN
contributor and therapist, Dr. Paula Bloom, who will speak about finding balance in our lives. Albert Einstein’s chauffeur is scheduled to share with us his insights about Einstein - the person behind his genius intellect. Of course, the year would not be complete without our infamous Bingotini and our annual luncheon, boutique and fashion show. Come join us. We welcome all lady members of the Temple. I look forward to meeting you!

No one should have to put himself in harm’s way
just to put food on the table
Emery just chose to re-enlist in order to feed his family.
It doesn’t have to be this way.
MAZON is working to end hunger for Emery and the millions of Americans and Israelis who struggle with food insecurity.
Please donate to MAZON today.
