Summertime on the BalconyBY RABBI DAN LEVIN

[email protected]

At the end of May, Aimee and I celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary. As we do each year, we pull out the wedding album and look at all the pictures of our family, the celebration, and that wonderful day.

One of my favorite pictures in our wedding album is a photograph of the Horah taken from the balcony in the ballroom. I love the perspective that picture affords of the celebration from above. My entire experience of our wedding was on the dance floor – you see things differently from the balcony. You see the patterns of the dance, you see how everyone has chosen to participate, and most importantly, I get to see myself from a completely different perspective.

Drs. Ron Heifetz and Marty Linsky of the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard note in their book Leadership On The Line how important it is for leaders to get off the “dance floor” and get up on the “balcony” from time to time. You can’t see everything from the dance floor – you’re simply too involved in the dance. But time on the balcony offers an opportunity to see things differently and to ask: “what’s really going on here?”

Jewish life in our synagogue and our community is amazingly vibrant. I love the spirit of our congregation, and the energy that comes from our celebration of Shabbat, holy days, life-cycle events and daily Jewish living. But as much as I love how we study and practice Judaism at Temple Beth El, I look forward with great anticipation each year to our congregation’s trip to Israel.

There is something different about the energy in the land of Israel. Walking through the narrow streets of the Old City of Jerusalem, touching the ancient stones of the Temple mount, hiking the “snake path” on my way up Masada, and excavating a basement of a house from more than two thousand

years ago connects me with the amazing ancient history of our people. Sharing Shabbat with members of Kehilat YOZMA, our sister Reform congregation in Israel, feeling the energy of the shops and restaurants along the coast in Tel Aviv, traveling through the Golan and Galilee all help me better understand who I am as a Jew today.

A visit to Israel, no matter where you are in life’s journey, is a transformative

event. Getting away from home to our ancient and modern homeland takes you up on the balcony to help you see yourself and your relationship with the Jewish people from a completely different perspective.

In addition to leading our congregation’s trip to Israel, I am extremely grateful to Temple Beth El for providing time for me to take a sabbatical this summer. For the first time in my eighteen years in the rabbinate, my sabbatical will provide me time to get off the dance floor and onto the balcony of my own life.

I will use my time this summer to read the many books I’ve stacked up next to my bed that I haven’t had the opportunity to read. I hope to use this time to engage in some writing projects that I have never had the time to pursue. I also look forward to using this time for some needed study. All of these projects I hope will inspire me to see our congregation, and my role as your rabbi, from the perspective that only time on the balcony can afford.

I am confident that Rabbi Brockman and Rabbi Weisman will take good care of Temple Beth El in my absence, and I look forward to sharing what I’ve learned when I return after Labor Day. I hope we all can take a little time this summer to get off the dance floor, and try to reflect on life’s journey from a new perspective.

You can’t see everything from the dance floor – you’re simply too involved in the dance.

But time on the balcony offers an opportunity to see things differently and to ask: “what’s really going on here?”

Temple Beth El President Patty Beck in Israel

A MESSAGE FROM PATTY BECK

My first visit to Israel was in 1989 when Louis and I took our three children on the Temple Beth El mission led by Rabbi Merle Singer. I remember the awesome feeling I had as I stepped off the plane and set foot on the tarmac at Ben Gurion Airport. I WAS HOME! I was going to see all of the sights I had heard my grandparents speak about. My great-grandparents are buried on Mt. Scopus and I would try to find their graves. My uncle had written several books about the history of the Jews and, A Host At Last, about Israel’s statehood. Israel had always been part of our family.

I have taken five subsequent trips to Israel

and each time that same feeling of being home comes over me when I feel the plane’s wheels touching the Israeli runway. As I walked in Mea Shearim (one of the oldest Jewish neighborhoods in Jerusalem), I knew that my Orthodox great-grandparents walked those same paths during their lives. Standing many times at the Western Wall and praying, I know I am standing on the shoulders of those who came before me. Now, our son and daughter-in-law-to-be live in Jerusalem. Our son, Steven, works for IRAC (the Israeli Religious Action Center) helping to achieve pluralism for all Israeli citizens. Once again, we see how important Israel is in our lives and how we can help our Israeli brothers and sisters.

L’Dor V’Dor, we are now planning to take our grown children and three grandchildren to Israel with Rabbi Jessica this coming December. We will see new sights and experience Israel through the eyes of the next two generations. Israel is our homeland and we must pass down to the future generations the importance of learning and supporting the land that our forefathers fought so hard to establish. We would love to have you join us as we travel to Eretz Yisrael in December!

Our discussion will be followed by a Tisha B’Av service.

Selichot with Ari Shavit

The week Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon slipped into a coma an article about him was published in The New Yorker. The timing is remarkable because the interview with Sharon took place before, but the article was published after he fell into the coma in 2006. The content of the article is brilliantly crafted and eloquently written and when it became clear earlier this year that Sharon was nearing the end of his life, I looked up the article and was surprised to see the author is Ari Shavit. Shavit, our speaker for Selichot, created a buzz this year in the Jewish world with his book My Promised Land. A detailed and beautifully crafted look

at the creation of the Jewish state and modern Zionism, it will be a powerful and purposeful way to experience Selichot, the Saturday night before Rosh HaShanah, and enter the High Holy Days reflecting with Shavit on the meaning of the Jewish state in the course of Jewish history and in our lives today. Israeli-born Shavit is an eloquent and purposeful reporter for the Israeli newspaper Ha’aretz and we are offering two opportunities over the summer to reflect on the book and its message. Whether you read the book or not, take advantage of these opportunities to reflect and join us for Selichot with Ari Shavit on Saturday, September 20, 2014.

I’m so excited to have finished my second year of the Cantorial Certification Program at Hebrew Union College (HUC): I’m halfway there! This past year our focus was on the High Holy Days, both the music and liturgy. I also took classes in Midrash and Mishnah, Pastoral Counseling, and Music Education. I’ve also been studying Modern Hebrew weekly. Yes, indeed, it has been a challenging, but very rewarding year!

On July 3, I depart for my HUC Summer in Israel program. I will be studying Hebrew in an Ulpan (language immersion program) 4-5 hours a day. I’m thrilled to also be taking a class called, “The History of Israel Through Music” where I will study Israeli modern history while at the same time learning about Israeli composers and singing their music. The highlight of my trip will be spending Shabbat on the beach in Tel Aviv with Rabbi Brockman, who will be on the AIPAC Rabbi’s Mission. It will be great to see Israel with my rabbi and friend.

I want to thank you, my beloved congregants, for allowing me this time away to study and grow. I will miss you all but I can’t wait to share all I’ve learned with you when I return. It is a privilege to be your Cantorial Soloist and in two years, your Cantor!

The theme of The Chronicle this month is about travels to Israel, so I dug out the journal I kept while my husband Mark and I traveled to Israel on a Federation Mission trip 19 years ago. It was the first time for both of us and I am so happy that I took such detailed notes because reading them caused me to feel like we were just there. I remember this was not my first choice for a vacation, but as my journal revealed, it was “by far the most meaningful, educational and spiritual experience of my life.”

For those traveling to Israel or elsewhere this summer, I wish you a safe and meaningful trip. However, if you are in town, Sisterhood has a couple of summer events that have been very popular in the past. Please join us for our annual Girls Night Out on July 10 which will include dinner and a movie and our Book Discussion evening on August 21. More information regarding the movie and book discussions will follow. Best wishes to everyone for a happy and healthy summer!

I was fortunate to spend two summers in Israel in the mid-1980’s immediately after I gradu-ated from university. My Great Aunt Laika and Great Uncle Moshe were pioneers who emi-grated from Poland in the mid-1930’s to British Mandate Israel. They lived at Kibbutz Usha near Haifa and I spent several days working with Moshe in the cow shed and dairy farm. The sun was so hot and the work so hard I remember filling my tray with food for lunch in the cafeteria and still falling in love with the communal life where each resident contributed and benefited.

I reluctantly flew back home after those summers, but the profound feeling of being there has remained with me. I have seen first-

hand the necessity for a Jewish homeland and of the hope, faith and optimism of a people faced with challenges from inside and out but who still believe, due to the foundation laid by those pioneers, that peace and prosperity are worth fighting for.

Speaking of prosperity, I want to thank the Brotherhood EVP Andrew Zwick and the entire Board for a successful 2013-14 year. Our programming will pick up again in August with our NFL Pick ‘Em Contest. Make a note now to attend our golf tournament in October. Look out for a new event in September — our Sports Night Fundraising Dinner with a guest speaker from a major sports team. Enjoy a safe and adventurous summer!

n maimonides institu te for jewish learning

Israel is a perfect country that is full of good and moral people. Israel always makes good and just political decisions with the best of intentions. And of course all Israelis love Judaism, eat falafel and live on kibbutzim that produce the world’s best technology. Only… we know that no extreme statement about ALL Israelis or ALL decisions the Israeli government makes could ever be true.

However for years this is how Israel education was done in schools across America and in some places still is today. Jewish students learned about the geography of Israel, about her all Jewish or mostly Jewish population and that all of the enemies of the state were external forces. That might have even been the Israel education you received in your youth.

The real Israel is a much more complicated place. There are enemies inside and outside her borders from many different political or religious backgrounds. Israel’s citizens follow different religions and have different skin colors. They do not all agree on politics or every action their government takes. So why should we teach our American children that they do?

The new wave of Israel education focuses much more on presenting Israel as it is: a complicated country with many wonderful moments and many complicated challenges.

At Temple Beth El we never want a student to grow up and feel that they were lied to for years about a country with which they hopefully have a strong emotional connection. We want them to grow up knowing all of what Israel is, good and bad, and loving the country despite or even because of the complexity. We do not want their feelings to be simple because simplicity does not invite engagement. Engagement is found in wrestling with a subject or place, exploring all the moments of greatness and failure.

So you may ask, “how do we try to achieve this connection?” Israel is best experienced using a variety of learning modalities and

through a number of paths including the senses, the arts and texts. Another way is to use technology to its fullest. Our students can “visit” Israel in real time. They can “go” to the Western Wall and “walk” through the shuk. They can connect to students in our sister city Kiryat Bialek and other places where Temple Beth El has relationships. The best, the very best, is of course, to visit Israel. Whether on a family trip, a NFTY program (be it summer or full semester in high school), High School in Israel or Birthright Israel as a college student,

there is nothing like actually being there! Temple Beth El offers financial assistance for Israel travel. Applications are available in the school office.

GOOD NEWS FOR JULES IS GOOD NEWS FOR OUR KIDS

B’NAI MITZVAH

Juliane Wolfberg, Director of Youth Engagement [email protected]

Rebecca LopatukhinJacob Mass Ryan Marcus

The children in our Early Learning Center went on an imaginary trip to Israel. With passports in hand, they showed their boarding passes to the ticket agent. When they landed at Ben Gurion Airport, they sang “Hatikvah”.They followed their itinerary and one of

the cities they visited was Jerusalem. There they learned about the Holy Temple that used to be there. All that is left of the Temple is one of the surrounding walls – the Kotel, or Western Wall. They wrote notes and placed them at the Kotel that was in the classroom. They danced to the song “Mayim” – which means water and “Achshav” – which is about going now to the land of Israel.

Their travels continued… they visited a kibbutz, had pita and hummus at the Israeli Café, participated in an archeological dig, decorated flags, negotiated at the Shuk and had Shabbat.

On the return trip, back to Temple Beth El, the children shared what they liked best about Israel.

AT TEMPLE BETH EL, OUR PHILOSOPHY IS TO ENSURE that anyone who wants to worship or obtain a Jewish education is able to join

our Beth El family, regardless of financial constraints.

This year Temple Beth El made it possible for every man, woman and child

who entered our door to become part of our family. As a congregation we

provided over $470,000 of financial assistance this past year. 296 families

received membership assistance, 175 children

received religious school scholarships, and 28

children were given aid for early childhood

education. We are extremely grateful to

each of you who made a contribution to

last year’s Annual Giving Campaign.

For more information on how to

contribute to Annual Giving, please contact

SUSTAINING MEMBERSHIP HAS ITS BENEFITS!There is no way to put a value on what our synagogue does. What is the value of creating a new generation of young men and women who build their lives on the bedrock of our people’s ethics and morals? Of building a community who take seriously their commitment to repairing our broken world? Of providing a sacred home where all can find comfort in troubling times? Priceless.

Sustaining Members, who pay above and beyond standard dues, allow us to provide membership, religious school education and early childhood learning for all who wish to participate. With their generosity, Sustaining Members make up the difference between what we ask members to contribute in dues compared to the actual cost it takes to run the synagogue. To give you an idea, standard family dues for 2014-15 will be $2,120 while the actual expense to Temple Beth El is over $4,500 per family.

This need remains pressing despite the recent, generous gifts made to the Fulfilling the Promise Campaign which are restricted to future capital improvements and enhancing the endowment.

To demonstrate our immense gratitude to our Sustaining Members, Temple Beth El offers unique benefits for this generous group. Please consider becoming a Sustaining Member or if you are already, please think about stepping up a level.

For more information, or to become a Sustaining Member, please contact Eliza Prince-Atias, Director of Development at 561-391-8900 or [email protected].

WE PROUDLY OFFER ALL SUSTAINING MEMBERS:

• Recognition on the Sustaining Member Wall of Honor

ANNUALGIVINGEach year we ask our congregation to contribute to the Annual Giving Campaign because at Temple Beth El we always take care of each other. With your continued support, Temple Beth El will make it possible for everyone who enters our doors to become part of our family by providing financial assistance to members who cannot afford our regular membership, religious school or early childhood commitments.

Remember departed loved ones and friends in our Services and Tributes for the Days of Awe – 2014/5775 booklet, used at both Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur Services. Listings are $25 each and the amount you contribute through the booklet will become part of your total Annual Giving contribution. You may also contribute online at tbeboca.org.

CHILDREN’S PROGRAMGrades K-2For our members, we’ve designed our High Holy Days Children’s Program to give your kindergarten-2nd grade students an opportunity to participate in an enriching, hands-on experience while parents are praying in the morning worship service. This exciting program is offered at Temple Beth El only, and will start at 10:00 AM and finish simultaneously with the morning worship service on the first day of Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur. Children will participate in art projects, stories, song-sessions, snacks and Tefillah. This program is not meant to replace the High Holiday Days Young Children’s service, but it is an additional experience that will allow parents to attend the adult worship services at the Temple. Reservation forms must be received by September 5 to ensure proper staffing and group placements. There is a $5.00 contribution per child per holiday experience. Students will be grouped by age. Siblings will not be in the same group unless they are in the same grade level at school.

COMPLIMENTARY BABYSITTING Ages 2-5Complimentary babysitting for children ages 2-5 is available at Temple Beth El and FAU on Rosh HaShanah evening (Temple Beth El only), Rosh HaShanah Morning, Kol Nidre and Yom Kippur Morning. Babysitting starts and finishes simultaneously with the adult worship service. Reservation forms must be received by September 5 to ensure proper staffing.

These programs are available for children who are members of Temple Beth El.Advanced enrollment in these programs is required. Unfortunately, we cannot accept walk-ins on the day of this program. For details please call Gavin Hirsch, Assistant Director of Jewish Learning and Living at 561-391-9092.

Frequent breakdowns. Sluggish email. Stalls and slow startups. It’s not a pretty sight. And the damage takes its toll in lost time, wasted money, and hard work that goes up in smoke.

PJPJ Tech has been a proud partner of Temple Beth El for 16 years. We built and maintain the network that keeps things moving. TBE’s network works because we do.

So if you’re ready to get up and running, and stay that way, give us a call for a free assessment.

SPINACH AND VEGETABLE FALAFEL WITH LEMON YOGURT SAUCE From Chez Gourmet

DIRECTIONS Sauté in a little vegetable oil the onions, carrots, garlic and peppers briefly until softened and let cool. In a food processor, combine the chickpeas, spinach, scallions, cumin, coriander, cayenne, parsley, eggs, and lemon juice. Pulse to combine and season with salt and pepper. Do not puree too smooth. The mixture should be coarse.

Add in the mixed vegetables, baking powder and 1/2 cup of the flour and pulse to mix. Chill in the refrigerator for 20 -30 minutes.

Add a generous amount of oil to a large sauté pan and heat it over medium-high heat until a tiny drop of the mix sizzles.

Meanwhile, form balls of the chickpea spinach mixture onto a plate

with remaining flour. Roll each ball on the floured plate and flatten a little.

Fry in batches of hot oil for about 3 to 4 minutes each side and drain on

paper towels.

FOR THE SAUCE Blend all ingredients together well and chill.

Serve the falafel on a bed of the cucumber salad with warm pita bread

and the lemon yogurt sauce.
