Even if you have never been to Israel, you have most likely participated in tree planting. At some point in your life you have been either the giver or the recipi-ent (or both!) of tree certificates from the Jewish National Fund (JNF) declaring that a tree has been planted in Israel in honor of a special occasion. It is a tangi-ble connection between us and the land, even across great distances.
This summer, I’d like you to think about shrinking that distance. Actually, elimi-nating it altogether. I invite you to join TBA on a remarkable journey to the past and present of Israel. We’re leaving Sunday, August 17, returning on Thurs-day morning, August 28. We will see all of the highlights, and also some unusual sites. There are actually two groups going at the same time, and you are welcome on either. One is aimed primar-ily at first-timers, and will include a bar mitzvah service at the Wall. The other is designed for adult returnees.
All of the details are elsewhere in the Bulletin, but of course, I’d love to talk to you about it.
I promise you that it will be an incredible experience. The summer is the perfect time to go: we’re guaranteed good weather, and lots of daylight means we can see more each day. A trip to Israel is not a vacation; it is a transformative event, and travelling with your congre-gational family makes it even better. I’ve got the testimonials from congregants who’ve travelled with me to prove it! If you’ve never considered a trip to Israel, think about this one. If you’ve been waiting for the right trip, this is it! And of course, feel free to call me with questions. I’m looking forward to travel-ling with you.
Peace and blessings, Rabbi David Holtz
Dear Friends,
Just a few weeks ago, we celebrated Tu b’Shevat, the New Year of the Trees. It’s always a bit odd here in the Northeast to be thinking about tree planting in January, but in the land of Israel spring is just around the corner. And in Israel, they are beginning to plant.

Notes from Cantor Margot E.B. Goldberg 4
Shalom!
In her article “Even Moses Needed A Voice” Shelly Christens-en, MA wrote:
Centuries ago, the Jewish people followed a powerful leader from Egypt into the wilderness and a new future. Little did they know that without G-d’s inclusion, Moses might never have been chosen.
In Shemot (Exodus 4:11) when G-d spoke to Moses and told him that he would lead his People out of Egypt, Moses replied that he could not accept this role for he was slow of speech and heavy of tongue. Moses’ self-assessment caused G-d to be angry and G-d said: “Who made man’s mouth? Or who makes one mute, or deaf or seeing or blind. Isn’t it I, G-d?”
G-d made it possible for Moses to fulfill his destiny by providing Aaron to speak for Moses. It was, in fact, a way of leveling the playing field or providing an accommodation. Moses could now do the work that G-d had commanded him to do. He would survive many more tests of faith and strength to lead His People.
February is Jewish Disabilities Awareness Month and it is our responsibility to look around us and see if we have leveled the playing field and provided accom-modations for those in our community who live with disabilities of any kind.
Rabbi Holtz has been talking about making TBA handicapped accessible since his arrival. With thanks to those who supported the project financially and the vision of Gerry Siegel and the House Committee the first project was to make the main hallway and bathrooms accessible to all. The water fountain was recessed into the wall and the bathrooms completely revamped to accommo-date those in wheelchairs or using walkers. Then 2 years ago with thanks to the Cohen family and the vision of the Sanctuary Renovation Committee we com-pletely gutted the Sanctuary to make it accessible to all. At the very first Bar Mitzvah held in our new space we were able to welcome the grandfather, confined to a wheelchair, easily to the bima using our new ramp. We also installed a t-coil hearing assistance system and I would love to hear from those who are finding it helpful.
Pam Barkley’s vision for the education of our children includes all. Depending on the needs of our students she has created both contained and inclusion class-rooms for both Judaic and Hebrew studies. There are special needs teachers as well as our teens who act as aides for those who need some support in a typical classroom setting. It is amazing to see these programs first hand as all of our children can be a part of our community at any level and receive the education that we all want for them.
During Jewish Disabilities Awareness Month (JDAM) I would encourage you to mark your calendars for Thursday, February 6 which is Jewish Disabilities Advo-cacy Day in Washington, DC and to help in the fight for those who can’t neces-sarily fight for themselves. As well I would encourage you to read the JDAM Reads book choice this year, “Hope Will Find You,” by Rabbi Naomi Levy and then join in a webinar discussion on February 20 (you can register on the PJ Library website).
I am very proud of TBA and all that we have done to ensure that everyone feels welcome.
L’shalom, Cantor Margot E.B. Goldberg

Looking for a way to do good? “Adopt a Family” La Asociacion

Book Club: March 14, 10:00amFree Spirit by Joshua SafranAn Unforgettable Journey Through an Unconventional ChildhoodWhen Joshua Safran was four years old, his mother—determined to protect him from the threats of nuclear war and Ronald Reagan—took to the open road with her young son, leaving the San Francisco countercultural scene behind. Together they embarked on a journey to find a utopia they could call home. Encountering a cast of strange and humorous characters along the way, Joshua spends his early years living in a series of makeshift homes, including shacks, teepees, buses, and a lean-to on a stump. Throughout it all, Joshua yearns for a “normal” life, but when he finally reenters society through school, he finds “America” a difficult and confusing place. Eventually, Joshua finds the strength to fight back against his tormentors, and helps his mother find peace. It is also a journey of the spirit, as he reconnects with his Jewish roots; a tale of overcoming adversity; and a captivating read about a childhood unlike any other. Suggested donation for non-members $2.00. Call the Temple office at (914) 631-1770 or email [email protected] to RSVP. Jewish Cultural Festival: March 30-April 10. In a society where 1 in 3 children lives in poverty, where immigrant families struggle, and family break-down is increasingly common, Tzedek is building a brighter future for Israel’s children. Children’s involvement in professionally struc-tured musical activities is of proven therapeutic value.
Their greatest success is the Tzedek Youth Choir, established in 2005 by a group of about 20 teens. Their show of Israeli music includes peace songs, Chassidic and world music. This high standard choir, directed by a profes-sional musical director, has performed many times in Israel and in Europe. Its second CD has just come out.
Since its inception, a sharp improve-ment in the children’s psychological and social situation has been ob-served: better scholastic results, easier group integration, enhanced ability to take responsibilities and greater self-esteem.
At Temple Beth Abraham Tuesday, April 1 at 7:00pm. For tickets see ad on right.
