New 3144P Diagnostic:Thermocouple DegradationDesigned to monitor the resistance of the thermocouple as part of the temperature measurement

How do we measure?By sending a current pulse through the thermocouple we can measure the resistance of the wire using the existing sensor lead connections. Why measure resistance?Resistance trending can indicate a problem with the thermocouple (open wires, vibration fatigue, etc) which will eventually cause error in the temperature measurement.Thermocouple Loop ResistancePatented

[File Name or Event]Emerson Confidential27-Jun-01, Slide *Emerson ConfidentialSlide *

Causes of Thermocouple Degradation Probable causes of resistance increases are:The wires are thinning due to wear

The connection at the tip is separating from grounded TCs

Corrosion (most likely at a wire connection)

Or there is a breakdown somewhere in the sensor leads

  • Rosemount has the broadest temperature portfolio of any vendor in the world. We provide a complete scope of products from Single point measurements to our ground breaking high density portfolio. We also provide a complete range of general use sensors and thermowells as well as Application and Industry Solution (AIS) sensors designed for your application needs. AIS sensors includes multi-point sensors, high temperature thermocouples as well as our patented sapphire sensor for gasification applications.

The Rosemount 3144P is by far the most differentiated temperature product in our offering.

The 3144P is able to take in dual sensors. Most of the transmitters that we have talked about up to this point can take one sensor.

It is available with various advanced diagnostics that will be described in greater detail.

It has a dual compartment housing. This is the field mount housing that was described earlier, also found on the 648.

It is our highest performing transmitter. Ambient temperature compensation and transmitter sensor matching are standard as well as a industry leading 5 year stability rating.

The 3144P is also our only product that is available with safety certification.

It is available with both HART and FOUNDATION Fieldbus like the 644 product.

Lastly, it has various hardware features. Among these are integral transient protection, an LCD display, and has a HART failure mode switch. The Rosemount 644 is the worlds best selling temperature transmitter. This is due largely in part to the features it has and the quality of Rosemount that stands behind it.

The 644 is available in two form factors, head and rail mount.

It is also available in multiple output protocols, HART and FOUNDATION Fieldbus.

Like the 144 and 248, the 644 has many housings it can be placed in, thanks to the DIN A standard it conforms to.

The 644 can be ordered with an LCD, which allows users to see process and device status in the field.

Thanks to special features found on the 644 such as transmitter sensor matching, the 644 has a high level of accuracy.

Custom alarm and saturation levels can be set by the user or pre configured in the factory using the C1 option code. Rosemount has the broadest temperature portfolio of any vendor in the world.

The Rosemount 848T is the first choice for high density temperature measurement.

This is the first product we have seen so far that runs on the FOUNDATION Fieldbus protocol.

The 848T can take in 8 individually configured inputs including thermocouple and mV.

Fieldbus runs on a line powered 2 wire structure, making it fairly cheap and easy to install.

This device can run on any Fieldbus host system as well as a Fieldbus gateway device for customers who do not have an existing Fieldbus architecture installed.

The 848T can also integrate analog 4-20 signals with an adaptor, which is useful for customers who eventually want to upgrade to a multi input device but still have transmitters installed in high density locations.

The 848T is intrinsically safe for many different environments.

Finally, it can be installed in a variety of junction boxes in the field to allow it to be mounted very close to the processes being measured. In this example, I will compare the installed cost savings that can be achieved by using the 848T with FOUNDATION fieldbus rather than the alternative, more traditional, high density temperature architectures. These architectures include wiring temperature sensors direct to System I/O Cards, using low-cost programmable transmitters to communicate the temperature measurements, and using high density multiplexers (MUX).For this example, I will compare the installed costs of all four architectures assuming there are 8 distillation columns, each with 8 thermocouple measurements, for a total of 64 measurements. Also, the distance from the System I/O rack to all 64 measurements is approximately 500 feet.

In addition to installed cost savings the 848T architecture incorporates industry standard FOUNDATION Fieldbus communication technology ensuring long term support, reduced maintenance and training costs, and long term product compatibility.

Beyond the cost savings, more advantages can be cited compared to other architectures. The closest priced alternative, multiplexers, run a proprietary protocol over the wires back to a control system, which requires the use of a de muxing card to be used with a typical DCS system. Along with this is specialized training for plant managers and installers for the proprietary systems, adding time and cost. The 3420 was mentioned earlier as a Fieldbus gateway device. This means that the 3420 can take FOUNDATION Fieldbus devices as inputs and give information back to a DCS that does not have an H1 Fieldbus card. The 3420 is capable of taking in 13 devices per segments, with 4 total segments possible. Keep in mind, when using the Rosemount 848T, this device can relay up to 416 temperature measurements.Over 80% of temperature measurements in a typical plant are for monitoring applications which presents a huge opportunity for wireless temperature monitoring. Wireless fits in our temperature message against traditional and costly measurement methods such as wiring direct, cheap single input transmitters or temperature multiplexers because it presents a huge cost savings for customers especially for monitoring applications. It allows the customer to monitor assets and processes they never would have before or replace broken and costly measurement methods.

A pricing survey conducted identified killer wireless temperature applications which presents a huge opportunity to Emerson and huge benefits to customers across all the industries we serve. These killer applications focused on asset monitoring which is an (underserved?) market we dont pursue hard enough. If we pursue these application and identify key customer contacts, we can add incremental points and create new spending from our customers. (For example, bearings are in many different assets such as motors, fans, pumps, compressor stations and conveyors. These assets can easily breakdown if the bearing fails which typically occurs when the bearing gets too hot. If the customer monitors the bearing temperature, they can prevent unnecessary shutdowns and improve plant availability.) After showing the customer the benefits of wireless temperature, we can upsell to process monitoring applications we are most familiar with.

Rosemount is the largest sensor supplier in the world! We shipped over 250,000 units in FVY07 Thats a lot of sensors!Rosemount has the broadest temperature portfolio of any vendor in the world. We also provide a complete range of general use sensors and thermowells as well as Application and Industry Solution (AIS) sensors designed for your application needs. The 1075 has been designed and built for high temperatures, that is temperatures above 1000 degrees C or 1800 degrees F. You will find them in many industries where ever there is high temperatures such as combustion processes and processes containing hot gasses. There are a few key features of this sensor design that make it suitable for these higher temperatures. Such as ceramic protection tubes. Although this model can be ordered with metallic protection tubes, such as heat resistant (Inconel or Kanthal), these high temperatures will often require ceramic protection tubes. At the applications become more demanding, dual protection tubes add strength and the ability to withstand higher temperatures. And for the most demanding, highest temperatures, the use of precious metal thermocouples, with ceramic dual protection tubes, will allow operation to over 1800 C or 3200F.Rosemount has the broadest temperature portfolio of any vendor in the world. We provide a complete scope of products from Single point measurements to our ground breaking high density portfolio. We pride ourselves on our quality. We have invested in world-class automation to ensure that every sensor and transmitter are fully tested before they reach your site. We can also pre-configure your transmitters and sensors to enable faster startups at your site. These pictures are from our US and Singapore production sites where you can see our extensive automated testing. Rosemount compensates for this in every one of our transmitters. These transmitters tested from negative forty to 185 degrees Fahrenheit over a 24 hour period. The computer reads these outputs for given temperatures and learns how the transmitter reacts at varying ambient temperatures. Error correction is then input to the transmitter in the form of a fit curve that the transmitter will use. An onboard RTD measures the ambient temperature, and based on this reading, the transmitter compensates its output to the curve, greatly reducing measurement error, as much as ten times less than a typical smart transmitter. We also invest in real-time x-ray equipment to ensure that issues are caught and identified BEFORE they leave the factory. Often issues with sensors or electronic boards cant be seen with the naked eye- it takes equipment and labs like this to find the root causes.

For a general use sensors, you have to cut to them to the correct length and weld them together. Highly automated processes ensure that you get the same sensor every time. Laser welding is particularly important to ensure a high quality sensor which can withstand vibration. Other vendors will merely crimp or tig weld their sensors. Although its less expensive, you cannot ensure a good and reliable connection with these methodsRosemount sensors are different from other sensors, not only in their construction, but also our level of testing.100% are tested for Hi-Pot and isolation resistance.100% are tested @ 0 and 100 degrees C to verify they are within spec.

Again, automated testing ensure reliable performance - every time.Diagnostics are very important for maximizing your process uptime. With Rosemounts innovative diagnostics we can help predict process upsets as well as minimize unnecessary maintenance.

We are releasing two new diagnostics this year in our 3144P FF device- Thermocouple degradation and Min/max tracking. The 3144Ps Hot Backup feature provides users with temperature measurement redundancy when using a dual-element sensor. The way it works is if the primary element in a dual-element RTD or Thermocouple fails, the transmitters signal will automatically and immediately switch to the secondary sensing element with no loss of measurement. This unique, trademarked feature allows users to reduce their risk of loosing a temperature measurement point by 64%. The Model 3244MV with a dual-element sensor is the most affordable configuration for sensor redundancy because it can be achieved with one transmitter and only one process penetration. This feature is enabled in the transmitters Input Selector function block - connect the Analog Input blocks that are linked to Sensors 1 & 2 (i.e. the primary and secondary sensing elements) and set the Input Selectors output to Hot Backup.
