What is Temperature?

Temperature is a physical property of matter that quantitatively expresses the common notions of hot and cold. Objects of low temperature are cold, while various degrees of higher temperatures are referred to as warm or hot.

Units of temperature are Celcius, Reamur, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin. In SI, the unit of temperature is Kelvin. But in Indonesia we usually use Celcius.

We usually use a thermometer to measure the temperature.

Thermometer

Thermometer is a device that measures temperature or temperature gradient using a variety of different principles.

Various authors have credited the invention of the thermometer to Cornelis Drebbel, Robert Fludd, Galileo Galilei or Santorio Santorio. The thermometer was not a single invention, however, but a development.

Use of Thermometer

Thermometers are used within roadways in cold weather climates to help determine if icing conditions exist. Indoors, thermistors are used in climate control systems such as air conditioners, freezers, heaters, refrigerators, and water heaters.

Alcohol thermometers, infrared thermometers, mercury-in-glass thermometers, recording thermometers, thermistors, and Six's thermometers are used outside in areas which are well-exposed to the elements at various levels of the Earth‘s atmosphere and within the Earth's oceans is necessary within the fields meteorolgy and climatology. Aircraft use thermometers and hygrometers to determine if atmospheric icing conditions exist along their flight path, and these measurements are used to initialize weather forecast models.

Cold water

Why we use alcohol? Because the contents of alcohol are less toxic and will evaporate away fairly quickly.

How to Make a Simple Thermometer

First, prepare all of the materials that we need to make a simple thermometer.

Then, fill the bottle with alcohol and mineral water. Don’t forget to add food coloring to the water.

Shake the liquid so it will be mixed.

Put a straw in the bottle, but don’t touch the bottom of the bottle.

Cover the top of the bottle with clay. But there should be no gaps on the clay.

Your simple thermometer is ready. To test it, put the thermometer in the hot water. The liquid will getting up because of hot temperature. Put in the cold water too. The liquid will getting down because of cold temperature.
