Which Factors are the Actors?Which Factors are the Actors?

Omega-3 EPA and DHA: are essential for life

Calorie restriction: may activates longevity genes or reduce excessive iron, copper and calcium

Resveratrol: may mimic caloric restriction

Green Tea: protects cells and tissues from free radicals

Resveratrol & Green Tea: are potent antioxidants that also chelate excessive minerals

Sun: vitamin D move calcium into tissues and up-regulates genetic expression of AMPs in immune cells

Sleep: repairs damaged cells and tissues while mobilizing calcium

Rabinia RA, Morettib N, R. Staffolania R, et al. E. Reduced susceptibility to peroxidation of erythrocyte plasma membranes from centenarians. Experimental Gerontology 2002;37:657–663.

Higher intakes of omega-3 fats may be a key factor in healthy aging and life extension

The benefit of omega-3 fish oil on lowering triglycerides, cardiovascular protection, and immune system modulation is well documented

Centenarians had higher levels of EPA and DHA and reduced susceptibility to oxidative damage

A study of cell membranes of centenarians (≥100 years) suggests that one biological mechanism at the basis of longevity and successful aging includes higher levels of omega-3 EPA and DHA from fish oil

Omega-3 EPA and DHA have dual anti-inflammatory and pro-resolution mechanisms of action

The Tissue is the IssueThe Tissue is the Issue

Tissue EFA form specific lipid-protein membrane complexes needed for cellular structures at specific stages of tissue development and differentiation

Tissue EFA form hormone-like, self-healing autacoids (auto = self; akos = healing) that signal important fine-tuning adjustments of healthy tissue responses to stimuli

Tissue EFAs directly transcript the genes involved in glucose and lipid homeostasis

Omega-3 is a Key Longevity FactorOmega-3 is a Key Longevity Factor

Docosahexaenoic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid are traditionally used against metabolic diseases. These fatty acids act as peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) agonists that transcript the genes involved in glucose and lipid homeostasis.

PPAR sensors for sugar and fat homeostasis are also the targets for the fibrates and glitazones drugs.

Small structural changes in the molecular structure of fatty acids have a great influence on activating different PPARs.

Docosahexenoic acid is a more effective (PPAR) activated receptor gamma agonist than the glitazones.

“TAPPING THE POWER of longevity genes could alter the arc of a typical human lifetime: instead of youth and growth culminating in maturity then giving way to

the decline of old age, a person might be able to retain the youthfulness he feels at 50 when he is 70, 90, or well past 100.”

Researchers discover that a lower dose of resveratrol than previously reported 343 milligrams paralleled gene expression patterns seen in caloric restriction

Wisconsin researchers then reported that a far lower dose of resveratrol, 17–320 times lower than prior published studies, exerted influence over far more longevity genes when accompanied by other small molecules

University of Connecticut researcher demonstrated that resveratrol, 175–350 mg, limits cardiac tissue damage caused by heart attacks, but at higher doses, 1750 and 3500 mg, it worsens the extent of heart damage following a heart attack

The Latest Resveratrol ResearchThe Latest Resveratrol Research Resveratrol Delays Age-Related Deterioration and Mimics

Dietary Restriction without Extending Life Span

Resveratrol-fed elderly mice show a marked reduction in signs of aging. Our findings indicate that resveratrol treatment has a range of beneficial effects in mice but does not increase the longevity of animals when started midlife.

Dietary supplementation with resveratrol reduces plaque pathology in a transgenic model of Alzheimer's disease

Resveratrol diminished plaque formation. The largest reductions in the percent area occupied by plaques were observed in medial cortex (−48%), striatum (−89%), and hypothalamus (−90%). The changes occurred without detectable activation of SIRT-1. This study supports the concept that onset of neurodegenerative disease may be delayed or mitigated with use of dietary chemo-preventive agents that protect against β-amyloid plaque formation and oxidative stress.

The Longevity Tea with EGCGThe Longevity Tea with EGCG

Tea consumption had its origin in China more than 4000 years ago.

Antioxidants such as polyphenols in green tea like Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG) can neutralize free radicals and may reduce or even help prevent some of the damage they cause.

According to Norman Hollenberg of Harvard medical school, catechins can reduce major health problems. He believes they should be classed as vitamins!

Catechins are antioxidant plant metabolites and are up to 100 times more potent than vitamins C and E. One cup provides more antioxidant activity than a serving of broccoli, spinach, carrots or strawberries.

Daily consumption of tea containing 690 mg catechins for 12 weeks reduced body fat, which suggests that the ingestion of catechins might be useful in the prevention and improvement of lifestyle-related diseases, mainly obesity.

Green Tea Targets Longevity FactorsGreen Tea Targets Longevity Factors

Green tea catechins support blood platelets while improving tissue perfusion.

Green Tea Extract increased fat oxidation during moderately intensive exercise, and improved insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance in healthy young men.

According to the U.S. National Cancer Institute, polyphenols containing catechins present in green tea may have chemoprotective properties.

The main antioxidant polyphenol of green tea extract, EGCG, when fed to mice induced with Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease, helped to protect brain cells from dying, as well as “rescuing” already damaged neurons in the brain, a phenomenon called neurorescue or neurorestoration.

According to the Times: Greek monks on Mount Athos who live on a diet of home-grown fruits and vegetables, fresh fish, and red wine have exceptionally good health.

Since 1994, they have been regularly tested and have 75% less prostate cancer than the international average. In one study, their rate of lung and bladder cancer was found to be zero.

Conclusion: Omega-3 supplementation significantly improved the lipid profile of active players randomized to treatment. These results suggest that fish oil supplementation is an effective way to increase eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid levels in plasma and should be considered as a method to improve modifiable cardiovascular risk lipid factors in professional football players.

We have learned that…We have learned that…

Targeting longevity factors is the secret to life extension.

Longevity is also “mid-life” extension.

Our environment dictates biology.

Omega-3 fish oil restores the essential order of life and protects against the harmful effects of aging.

Lower dose resveratrol may reduce the signs of aging.

Green Tea protects against free radical damage and may play a role in neurorestoration.

You can unleash the Iron Man or Woman by targeting the longevity factors.
