Commodores Comments

After the great news of success of our sailors in last month’s edition I have even more good results to share with you all. Our RS sailors have enjoyed fantastic results across the board. Pete Barton was 2nd in the RS Aero 7 World Championships at Carnac in France. Liam Willis equalled that with a 2nd place finish in the RS Aero 9 World Championships also at Carnac. Richard Russell and Hannah Snellgrove achieved a 2nd place in the RS 500 Eurocup Series. My hearty congratulations to you all.

Meanwhile back in the UK there has been some improvement in the weather and exciting competition can be seen in the Sunday racing. I have just got back from RIB duty this Sunday and while the wind was a tad light for some, there was some close racing. The Race Officer of the day, John Fitzsimmons, was able to incorporate the new race mark Oakhaven into the course.

This year we were host for the Merlin Rocket and Silver Scorpion joint open event. Many visiting boats entered the competition and there was a close contest from 39 Merlins and 6 Scorpions over the 2 days. The Merlin Rocket event was won by Roger Gilbert and James Stewart from Frensham Pond SC. The Scorpion competition was won by Pete Grey and Rich Pepperdine from Staunton Harold SC. A full report and results can been seen on our web site.

We also hosted the Lymington River Scow Championship this year. This event was won by Nik Froud and Freddie Fitzsimmons in their scow “Chickadee” Again a full report and results can be seen on our web site.......................

Continued..............

On the Cruising front we have seen yet another weekend cancelled due to the strong winds. The annual trip to Bembridge was the casualty. We hope to be able to visit there in 2018. The organising group will be getting their heads together shortly to plan the programme. As I write this article some 15 yachts have gone to Hornet Services Sailing Club for our annual visit. The weather looked very good for the weekend and I am sure they will have had a great time.

Our very popular Winter Talks programme gets underway on 27th September and I hope to see many of you throughout the coming months enjoying the varying subjects we have lined up for you.

Just on point I would like to mention again and that is the use of the fire escape from the balcony. This is not an entrance to the Club and MUST NOT be used as such. It has to be open when the Club is in use for health and safety reasons. We have recently spent your money on repairing the gate. Please do not use it to gain entrance to the Club.

Happy Sailing

The 2017 St Vaast Mini Cruise and alternative destinations Yachts:

Ayres & Graces

Born Free Blue Haes Drifter Elaine Lullula

Lyra Moonstorm Njord Ruby Tiger Second Rebellion

Teal

The event…despite a favourable weather forecast and an improving trend in the week, the event was cancelled at 0700 on Thursday morning. SR had planned to leave at 0700, but sea state and wind strength reports from the yachts that had set out earlier indicated marginal passage conditions for the smaller yachts. In the event, Moonstorm which had crossed to Cherbourg on Wednesday was the only yacht to follow the passage plan, well done Allan and Ann. Allan has given a detailed rally report separately, many thanks. Ironically the smallest yacht on the rally, Drifter which had set off earlier, did not receive the cancellation message and carried on. Mercifully the wind and sea eased with the turn of the tide mid-day and Laurence made the passage without incident but reportedly knackered by the end, well done! They returned on Sunday from Cherbourg, again without incident.

What about the rest of the fleet?...Born Free did not leave the mooring. On yachts having passed the Hurst Narrows, Ayres & Graces and Teal thrashed their way upwind to Weymouth, only to find it full, so ended up in Portland. Elaine and Njord went to Yarmouth and Cowes respectively and reportedly had an enjoyable weekend. At the suggestion of Ruby Tiger, an improvised rally ended up in Haslar with Blue Haes, Lullala, Lyra, Ruby Tiger and Second Rebellion. The latest addition to the Grey Funnel line was closely scrutinised, especially by Ruby Tiger (!) and at the usual hour a drinks party was held aboard SR before repairing to supper. Friday saw some yacht crews visiting local venues, Maritime Museum, Spinnaker Tower and Gunwharf Quay. Saturday saw Lullula and Ruby Tiger going to Chichester, SR to Beaulieu and Lyra to Cowes. Blue Haes chose to return home.

All yachts and crews returned to their respective moorings on or before Monday, safe and sound with I guess, some regret that the St Vaast rally had to be cancelled and only for the second time since 2004.

Jim Sey, Second Rebellion (SR)

Past times - Keyhaven From a painting by Eileen Sey

Eileen Sey graduated at Grays School of Art Aberdeen and taught for many years, latterly switching to the teaching of special needs children. Venues that have featured Eileen’s work include, the Royal West of England Academy in Bristol and galleries in Southampton, Winchester, London and Glasgow, in addition to the local exhibitions in St Barbes (4 months), Saltmarsh Gallery (currently), Bell Fine Art and Red House Christchurch. Eileen is a member of the Palette Club, also the Milford Art Group. Hampshire County Council purchased two of her artworks which are now also featured in the prestigious volume “The National Public Catalogue Foundation”. These venues are but a few of the galleries and exhibitions that have exhibited and sold her work over the years, whilst also undertaking commissions from private clients. Eileen has also been a featured artist in “The Artist” magazine and her studio is open all year by appointment. Thank you Eileen.....Ed.

Wine Cellar We can all think of certain grape varieties which typify the wines of a particular country, Reisling---Germany, Pinot Noir---France, Sangiovese---Italy are obvious examples. But there are a small number of varieties that have aquired a world-wide importance, thanks to their ability to adapt to widely varying growing conditions. A country such as Italy, with its tradition of viticulture that runs throughout the land and that goes back to Roman times and beyond, can boast over a hundred major grape varieties. Only a handful of these can be found beyond Italy’s frontiers; but this is the exception rather than the rule.

Two points need stressing, however. The fact that varieties bearing the name can be found in France, Italy, eastern Europe, California, and Australia does not imply that the wines which they produce will be the same or even similar. Usually, the longer the wines have grown in a particular environment the more they will have adapted to it, in consequence, the grape may well have changed, the differences being often as great as the similarities, and sometimes even more pronounced.

The second point that needs to be considered is that the name of the variety can change from country to country, and even from region to region. It takes a deal of memory to recall for instance that Ugni Blanc, White Shiraz, Hermitage and Trebbiano are all the same grape, simply trading under different names.

Barbera one of the most important Italian grape varieties is also found in California. When young it has a very simple colour and is often high in acidity. Tends to have a high alcohol content of around 13-13.5%.

Cabernet Franc widely used in all regions of Bordeaux and for the red regions of the Loire. Produces softer more spicy wines than Cabernet Sauvignon.

Cabernet Sauvignon the classic variety of Bordeaux Medoc and Graves. Produces wines of substantial colour, developing a black current fruitiness. In France it is at its best when blended with Merlot.

Gamay The vine of Beaujolais where it produces a wine with intense colour when young. It is high in acidity but low in tannin thus its wine can be drunk younger than other reds. Nowhere outside the Beaujolais district does it produce to its best.

Merlot The main grape variety of St.Emillion and Pomerol in Bordeaux. Produces wine of a full colour and with 12 to 13% alcohol. Now planted World Wide.

Pinot Noir The classic grape variety of the Cote d’Or Burgundies, colour is deep and vivid, bouquet opulent and perfumed, complex and rich but delicate in texture. To be at its best it requires a sunshine summer, so make a note.

Syrah, classic variety of the Rhone with dense colour and a pronounced perfume.

Revised navigation notice Small boat channel entrance to Portsmouth Harbour....Remaining approximately 50 metres wide throughout its length, the most significant changes are that all vessels using the small boat channel are to leave 4 Bar Buoy to port, whether heading inbound or outbound, and that north of this point the channel has been straightened from the route currently shown on new edition Chart 2625 . Vessels navigating along the small boat channel should now follow a line that passes from 4 Bar Buoy to approximately 25 metres east of BC outer (as depicted), keeping other passing small craft on their own port side.

This amendment is not on the latest chart and is not in this years almanac. If you follow last years chart, when entering you will be in the channel for traffic in the opposite direction.
