LESSON PLANS

Day 1 Goal: Review the numbers (Please note: The interactive notebook begins on day 2) When telling time, your child needs to know the numbers 0-60 really well. Here is a list of games you can play to review the numbers. If you haven’t tried my number lesson plan at home, then it is a good place to start.

1) Number Bingo: I’m sure you have played some version of bingo as a child. In fact, I used to go play bingo with my mother at the local fire department so it is a game for adults too. This bingo game gets you and your sprout practicing the pronunciation of numbers in English.

2) Teen Number Game: This engaging game is great for two or more people. Sometimes there are problems with the pronunciation of numbers that end with-ty and the pronunciation of the teen numbers. This game will help you practice.

3) I have Who has Numbers: This activity is made for larger groups. I recommend playing with four or more people. It is a game that has a beginning and an end. The best part of this game is that it is a quick review where students get to practice listening and speaking the numbers in English.

4) Make a Number Booklet or Poster: In order to review numbers, have your child make a mini book. On each page, they can write the number and draw a picture. Of course, you don’t want to make a booklet for 60 numbers. You decide what to include. Be creative!

5) Number Memory Game: Just like in Bingo, this game can be used for any topic. In this number memory game, learners get to see the number written as numerals in in written form.

It is good practice, but make sure you are saying the numbers aloud to practice your pronunciation.

6) Use this Giant Number Mat: This number mat comes with several activities for reviewing numbers. Check them out!

7) What number am I?: This trivia game is part of my Test Your

English series. It is good for all levels.

Day 2: Goal: Learn Time vocabulary and Telling Time to the Hour in English Today’s aim starts with setting up this lesson in your interactive notebook. First, have your child cut and glue the title onto a new page in your notebook. The cut and glue the clock. See the picture below. They can paste the labels, o’clock, quarter past, half past, and quarter to. (The other parts of the clock will be glues on day 5.) Next, glue in the vocabulary section on a new page. Read over the vocabulary and match the word to its definition. After that, begin the second aim for today’s lesson: Telling time to the hour. Glue the title and example and the box with the three different ways to ask for the time. Read the example and have your child answer the three questions with the same time as in the example: It is four o’clock. Finally, practice telling time to the hour with the provided examples. There are four analog clocks and four digital clocks. Your child must draw and match the time on the four analog clocks. Then they must write the time next to the digital clocks. Cut and glue the practice into the notebook.

Day 3 Goal: Telling time to the half hour in English First, paste the large info box on a clean page. This information box talks about the use of a.m. and p.m. It also talks about the three parts of the day, morning afternoon, and evening. Read over it several times and make sure you and your child understand the information. Next cut and paste the title onto a new page. Now it is time for a review. Beneath the title cut and paste the pocket. This pocket reviews how to ask for the time in English. There are three sentences, all colored coded. Your child needs to cut out the parts of the sentence and put the words in order to form the question. Don’t glue these questions. Put them in the pocket for a later review. Then cut and paste the examples and the practice for telling time to the half-hour. Day 4 Goal: Telling time to Quarter hour in English This follow the same pattern as the last couple of days. Cut and paste the title and example. Review the example and complete the practice. For further practice, discuss different times to the quarter hour or practice writing the times on a piece of paper. You tell your child a time to the quarter hour. Your child responds with the second way to tell the time.

Day 5 Goal: Telling time to the minute in English First, cut and paste the title. After cutting the example, I folded the paper in half. Then glued the little booklet underneath the title. After that, I pasted the practice beneath the examples. This saved room in my notebook and changed things up a bit. After you and your child have studied how to tell the time in English, there are several review games you can use to practice.

• Play I have Who has activity for time

• Play time memory

• Create the time booklet and complete the various activities.

• Any time you and your child pass a clock, practice saying the time in English. If there is more than one way to tell the time, then say them all.
