A postcard (originally «an open letter») is a special

kind of postal cards for the open letter (without an envelope).

and its back part is designed for writing messages and address of the recipient and sender as well as sticking a postage stamp.

This is the Christmas card appeared in England in 1840.

In the heart of it the artist placed the family of Sir Henry Cole sitting at the Christmas table, the pictures on the sides designed to remind the others of mercy and compassion of a respectable English family. Judging from the drawings the Cole has generously shared clothing and food with the poor. The card has sonorous signature: "Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!"

Collecting postcards is called deltiology.

Deltiology began with a gathering of species and ethnographic postcards, which were one of the most accessible means of acquaintance with nature, life and culture of the peoples of the world.

They began publishing special magazines and catalogs (in Germany, Austria-Hungary, France, Russia, UK, USA, Italy, Switzerland, Spain, etc.), international exhibitions were held (in Leipzig, St. Petersburg, Nice, Paris, Florence, Nuremberg, London etc.), congresses of collectors and publishers of postcards (in Leipzig - 1896, 1910, in Nice - 1899)and also they began to conduct the first auctions.

The deltiology of today is one of the most popular type of collecting. At the same time cards are usually valued in proportion to their age and rarity of topics. The increased demand for greeting cards provoked a rise in prices. So, for example, the price of some cards on the online auctions may reach one thousand dollars, although most of them are not worth $ 5.
