    DURING THE THANKSGIVING

HOLIDAY, I watched a lot of television

and movies. If we watch TV regularly,

we sometimes come to accept what

it shows us as “normal.” This includes

the kinds of people shown –some races

    are underrepresented, or their charac-

ters are simplifi ed stereotypes. It is also

easy to get used to seeing commercials

    – we come to accept the messages that

they transmit at us. During Thanksgiv-

ing weekend I recorded and watched a

2014 BCO Golf Tournament BY KEIJU TERADA

    THIS YEAR’S BCO ANNUAL GOLF

    tournament was held on Oct.6,

Monday, at the Sequoyah Country Club

in the Oakland hills. Players in previ-

    ous years’ tourneys experienced ex-

tremes from 90 degree plus temps to a

near rainout. This time, the skies were

    bright and sunny.

A total of 75 players enjoyed the

    weather, the camaraderie, and even

the challenges of the course. We

were fortunate to have as our guests,

Rev. Kodo Umezu, Bishop of the

    Buddhist Churches of America; Mrs.

    Janet Umezu; Mr. Masato Watanabe,

    Counsel General, and Mr. Yoshiro

    Tasaka from the Japanese Consulate.

    With our friends, supporters, and

    temple members, the banquet that

    followed made a fun evening.

    We again chose a community

charitable organization this year to be

a benefi ciary. This year, it was the Asian

    Health Services. The Buddhist Church

of Oakland has been long time sup-

    porter of the community organization.

To assist in their efforts, part of the pro-

ceeds of the tourney was donated to

    Asian Health Services.

We like to thank Union Bank, this

    year’s Corporate Sponsor, Silver Level,

all the players, donors, supporters, and

volunteers that made this another suc-

    cessful tournament. Many thanks go

to the tournament committee for their

great work and enthusiasm that con-

tributed to the success of this event.

Special thank you’s go to Lynne Neishi

    for the tourney correspondence, and

    Susan Tanisawa for her tremendous

help with the banquet program and

raffl e, among many other things.

    We look forward to everyone’s

    participation again in next year’s

tourney. We’ll keep you posted on the

    details.

OBWA News BY KAREN HASHIMOTOFOUR LADIES FROM FUKUOKA

    attended the FBWA Conference in

Irvine in October. They spent time

in the Bay Area before returning to

Japan. We thank Maya and Gary

Lawrence for hosting two of the ladies.

    Reverend Bridge conducted service

on October 15. With Executive Chef

Linda Minamoto at the helm, we served

    delicious spaghetti casserole. We

    thank Carol Thunen, Ruby Kuritsubo,

    Karen Hashimoto, Kathy Terusaki

and Gloria Fujimoto for providing the

salad, garlic bread, dessert and fruit.

We thank Tricia Hisaoka for making the

favors. The favors were the perfect

addition to make the luncheon special.

    Reverend Endo was the headliner

    at the after-lunch entertainment. All

the ladies participated in the Karaoke

session, and we all enjoyed Reverend

Endo’s contribution. A fun time was

had by all who attended. The day

ended at the Alameda Temple where

dinner was served. Thank you to

    Jean Nakazono and her students

who entertained the group with line

    dancing.

for him. This is because his teaching

doesn’t end with ignorance and ar-

rogance – instead, in the process of

    recognizing our limitations, we also

come into contact with a greater real-

ity – Amida Buddha – and its liberat-

    ing, transformative power. We become

able to live a more genuine life, in rec-

ognition of our limitations but also in-

formed and embraced by the true wis-

dom and compassion of the Buddha.

On Sunday, January 11, we will be

observing Ho-on ko, the memorial ser-

vice of Shinran Shonin where we ex-

    press our gratitude for encountering

the teachings of Shin Buddhism. Our

guest speaker this year is Rev. Yukiko

Dharma School News BY MAYA LAWRENCE

THANK YOU TO OUR HIGH SCHOOL

Class for a wonderful lesson in mind-

fulness. Kiyomi Nomura and the High

School class asked the Dharma School

students to concentrate and be mind-

    ful while they experienced different

    sensations in touching while blindfold-

ed, and observing. Peeled grapes feel

pretty slimy, and so does soapy dish

water when you can’t see them. The

Dharma School students love to inter-

act with the High School students, who

    are fantastic models of thoughtfulness

    and patience. Thank you again!

    And the following week, continu-

ing with our Mindfulness theme, we

    asked Christine Bartlett, Jun Hamamo-

to’s good friend and former Lawrence

Hall of Science instructor, to lead a

workshop called Build it. Can you build

a structure out of rolled up newspapers

that will reach the ceiling? That was

our challenge. And the three groups of

    Dharma School students succeeded!

They had a good time while practic-

ing mindfulness – working together and

a new start in the coming year of 2015.

    Our twice monthly gatherings,

under the able leadership of Jean

    Nakazono, have always been enjoy-

able and fulfi lling with various activi-

ties. At this time , we extend a sincere

“thank you” to our Rev. Harry Bridge

for his a.m. mini services to get us

started for the day, for all the mon-

    etary donations and materials from

our members and others, to Patti

hard work in trying to get us all to

master the art of knitting and crochet-

ing and to the members for faithfully

    attending and supporting each other.

    On Thursday, December 4, 2014,

the group dined at the Le Cheval Res-

taurant as part of our year-end festivi-

ties. Thursday, December 18th, will be

our fi nal gathering for the year. We

look forward to any new members

wishing to join us. You are all welcome

to join. We do have fun!

A Happy and Prosperous 2015 to

    All.

Message from the PresidentCONTINUED FROM FRONT PAGE

forward to it every year because they

    love the Thanksgiving meal. Every

family has their own special recipes for

    the meal, especially, the dressing

and yams; some families also have a

special way of cooking the turkey. This

year I had Thanksgiving at one of my

sister’s. Her son smoked the turkey

which was moist and delicious and my

sister made a yam souffl é. Both were

very different from what we usually

have. I admit that I’m a nostalgic and

prefer how my mother prepared the

meal. However, I was mindful (Rever-

end Bridge’s topic for November) of

the care and effort my sister and her

son put into making the meal special.

Of course, one of the best things

    about Thanksgiving is eating leftovers.

Mariko and I had a second Thanksgiving

on Friday. I brought some leftovers

home but because we didn’t have

mashed potatoes at my sister’s, I made

some on Friday. I also made candied

yams which was how my mother

prepared the yams, which is one of my fa-

    vorites. Thanksgiving is about

sharing a meal with friends and

family and being thankful for what we

    have, especially friends and family.

I had the honor of accompanying

    Reverend Bridge, Mika, Ron Nomura,

and Don Kaneshige to Dos Palos to

pick up the mochi rice that is so gen-

erously donated by Mrs. Tama Koda

of Koda Farms. We picked up 800

pounds of rice. I had the opportunity

to meet Mrs. Koda’s daughter, Robin,

who was very gracious. A tradition of

picking up the rice is having lunch at

the Wool Growers Restaurant in Los

Banos. What a fun experience. The

restaurant is a throw-back to the fi f-

ties; red checkered oil cloth table-

cloths and wood paneling. The tables

are long tables where one sits with

others and the food is served fam-

ily style to your group. The food was

delicious and plentiful. If you eat there,

you better like meat and be hungry!

Thank you very much Mrs. Koda and

Robin for the rice and to Reverend

Bridge, Mika, Ron and Don for pick-

ing up the rice, especially Ron who

drove his truck. Thank you also to Ron,

    Reverend Bridge, Eric Ikeda, Robert

Noguchi and Jon Takagaki for unload-

    ing the rice at BCO.

You are reading this right after,

mochitsuki. I hope you had fun help-

ing! Thank you to everyone who came

out to help and especially to the Jr.

YBA and their parents for preparing

the lunch. I’ll write more about this

    next month!

As usual, I am late, late, late. I had

hoped to send in a Holiday greeting

but, I missed the deadline. So, this is

my greeting: May you all have a joy-

ous holiday season. May the New Year

bring you good health and happiness.

    Happy New Year! Gassho, Linda.

    Th anksgiving is about

    sharing a meal with

    friends and family and

    being thankful for what

    we have, especially

    friends and family.

    Wednesday, January 14, 2015

    7:00-8:30 p.m.

    Evening Dharma Service and

    Discussion with

    Reverend Harry Gyokyo Bridge.

Begin the new year with gratitude! Join

us for a Dharma Service and open dis-

    cussion followed by light refreshments.

All adults and young adults interested

    in Buddhism are welcome.

Please note there will be no Saturday

    Study Class in January.

Our BCO family is truly one of

the Three Treasures (you know, I take

    refuge in Buddha, Dharma, Sangha).

Join us for Dharma Chat and see for

    yourself!

Dharma Chat is a gathering for

adults and young adults following the

    Dharma Family Service. We gather

together in the mini-chapel with cof-

fee, tea, and refreshments and just

chat. We talk about everything from

current events, to children and grand-

children, to movies, books, pets, work,

    travel, holidays, driving, childhood

    experiences, and whatever other

topics may come up. The conversa-

    tion is comfortable, relaxed, thought

    provoking, amusing, and even inspir-

ing. When I look around the room I

am amazed at the diversity of back-

    grounds and life experiences pres-

ent with our common bond being the

nembutsu. We all are on a path seeking

to live life with awareness, authenticity,

    and appreciation.

In January we will have Dharma

Chats on Sundays January 18th and

    25th following the Dharma Family

    Service. Please join us!

Jr. YBA News BY KELSEY HIROTA

Note from the Editor BY JOYCE YOKOMIZO

    HAPPY HOLIDAYS! LAST MONTH HAS

been very busy. In early December,

some members of the Jr. YBA attend-

ed a Bay District meeting, where rep-

    resentatives from Buddhist temples

in and around the Bay Area met up

to discuss topics such as upcoming

events and other matters. There was

also Bodhi day, where the Jr. YBA

chaired and performed a skit. We

hope you all liked it! At Mochi Tsuki,

we helped make mochi and served

udon lunch to all those who came

out. Thank you to all the parents and

chefs who helped prepare and serve

the meal, especially Erika Medina and

her family for chairing! It was a great

    success!

In 2015 (yay!), we will be do-

ing things such as attending another

    Bay District meeting, being Dharma

    School teaching assistants, and start-

ing sales for tickets for another Udon

Luncheon, so be on the lookout for

that. Merry Christmas and Happy New

    Year! See you in 2015!

    HOPE YOU ALL NOTICED THE

    wonderful, professional format we

have for the Busshin starting with our

January, 2015 edition. Thanks to the

efforts of our talented, Pam Kato, we

can start the new year with a fresh and

    updated look! Happy New Year.
