Dear Subscribers,
We are kicking off Telepresence Options 2015 with our
annual InfoComm 2015 “Best-in-Show Awards” which we
have been giving out since 2010. Check out our awards and
let me know who we missed. It’s a big show and I didn’t have
my Segway this year. But the folks I did get to see blew my
socks off!
Telepresence Options 2015 - What to Look Forward to:
We’re Changing our Name! To Visual Collaboration
Magazine. For our long time readers this will make perfect
sense since we have been covering visual collaboration
(and telepresence and videoconferencing and telepresence
robotics and WebRTC) from the beginning. For new
readers it better describes what we cover and the types of
solutions you can expect to find in our, also to be re-named:
Visual Collaboration Catalog.
New Magazine! This year we are gearing up for our best
magazine ever. Just like always it will be a deep dive into
one particular topic and this year it will be visual collaboration environments including a
focus on how organizations get their money back with faster time-to-market, time-to-
insight, and better collaboration and communication with vendors, partners, and
customers.
We are still looking for a managing editor that both understands visual collaboration
and the business of running a publishing business AND an e-commerce partner that
carries the latest and greatest in visual collaboration gear with a knowledgeable staff to
improve our on-line Telepresence and Videoconferencing Visual Collaboration Catalog
so if you know anyone who would be appropriate in either case then please let me
know.

Visual Collaboration @ InfoComm 2015
Trends & Best-of-Show Awards
by: Howard S. Lichtman
As we like to point out every year, InfoComm is one of our favorite shows because there are so few
venues where you can actually go and "kick-the-tires" on so many visual collaboration offerings under
one roof. It is also a pleasure to get to see so many old friends and make new ones. This year InfoComm
set a new all-time high attendance record with 39,105 attendees from 108 countries visiting 950 exhibitors
in 515,000 square feet of exhibit space. As usual there were new trends and new solutions for visual
collaboration. Check out our update on the trends and Best-of-Show Winners for: Best New Product, Best
Interactive Display, Best Visual Collaboration Solution for Creatives, and more!

Medical Marijuana Prescriptions in Minutes Using Telemedicine
July 1, 2015 | Telepresence Options
I’ll begin this story with a disclaimer: I rarely smoke
weed. Aside from the few times that I've tried it
recreationally, marijuana has never really appealed to
me as it does to the millions of Americans who light up
for medical purposes or just for fun.
Perhaps that's what makes my experience with Eaze,
an on-demand weed delivery marketplace, all the
more surreal. Last Friday while sitting in my friend's
living room, I was able to get a preview of the
company's new app-based feature, which allows users to consult with a doctor via their mobile phones or
computers for medical marijuana assessments. Within an hour I used Eaze to video conference with a doctor,
receive a marijuana recommendation and purchase an eighth of an ounce of "Sour Diesel" for delivery. The
cannabis arrived shortly after the sausage and pepperoni pizza I had ordered to accompany it.

Oculus reveals its consumer Rift VR headset
June 12, 2015 | Telepresence Options
Three long years after Oculus unveiled its VR
headset to the world, it now finally has one
ready for consumers. Say hello to the Rift
headset that you can actually buy. It features
two OLED screens that promises clarity and a
wide field of view. It also has a tracking system
which CEO Brendan Iribe says has a very low
latency movement that the company has refined
over the years. Interestingly, there's also now an
external sensor that you can put on your desk,
which replaces the webcam-like sensor from earlier Oculus headsets. They've also integrated a pair of
headphones into the headset itself, which Iribe says has that 360-degree spatialized audio that's so integral to a
more immersive environment. And yes, you can remove them to add your own headphones. The headset itself
is designed to fit better. There's a dial to better adjust the distance between your eyes (also known as the
interpupillary distance), plus the whole thing is covered in cloth for more comfort. And if you wear glasses? No
problem, because it now fits those of us with corrective lenses as well.

The World's Most Interesting Commercial AV Mounts
July 9, 2015 | Telepresence Options
Story and images by Matt Pruznick / AVNetwork
A point of pride for thriving companies has long been an
elegant, genteel boardroom. But lately, demands for unified
communications technology have begun to alter the designs of
these meeting hubs, forcing companies to spoil their
sophisticated décor with flat panel TVs and wiring.
But there's an alternative, and it's more impressive than any
mahogany or marble alone could be.

6 Secrets of Active Learning Classroom Design
July 9, 2015 | Telepresence Options
Story and images by Dian Schaffhauser / Campus
Technology
Like a jazz dance performance, active learning
combines doing, movement and impromptu variety in a
way that gets students and faculty up and out of their
usual positions in the classroom. The room and its
technology trappings become the stage and props for
encouraging the unexpected to unfold.
The goal of active learning is to create a space that can
become the catalyst for change, noted Lennie Scott-
Webber, director of education environments for
Steelcase and former head of the Department of Interior Design & Fashion at Radford University (VA). "When
you open the door to a space, does it give you permission to act differently other than to be behaviorally
conditioned to 'sit and git' or 'stand and deliver'? If the space doesn't give permission to change, then it's too
easy to revert back to what we know."

How cloud videoconferencing turned LifeSize around
June 30, 2015 | Telepresence Options
Story and images by Chris Talbot / FierceEnterpriseCommunications
The demand for videoconferencing is increasing at a rapid rate, mostly because of
consumer tools like Skype and Apple FaceTime, but that doesn't mean every aspect of
videoconferencing is growing. In the case of LifeSize, its leaders found they had to
reinvent the company over the last couple of years, shifting from a hardware focus to a
software one.
As videoconferencing moved onto consumer devices, what companies like LifeSize found
was the traditional complex and expensive videoconferencing systems weren't of
interest to as many enterprises anymore. With a shift affecting interest in its larger
systems, LifeSize moved to a more consumer-friendly system around a cloud Software-
as-a-Service.

Slack Is Just The Tip Of The Iceberg For Enterprise Tech
June 22, 2015 | Telepresence Options
Story and images by Ross Fubini / TechCrunch
Slack's valuation soared to $2.8 billion in less
than two years, and has doubled in the past six
months alone -- all without any big marketing
campaigns. The startup's adoption curve and
rave reviews are something many founders and
investors dream about, but few actually
achieve.
Enterprise startups in general have been on a
tear over the past few years as the
"consumerization" trend continues to churn and the ascendance of Big Data continues to transform the way
business gets done. Slack is by no means the first enterprise collaboration tool to gain serious traction, but the
startup has made strategic choices -- from product design to enterprise contract structure -- that have put it on
track to generate massive adoption and add value to companies across verticals.

Google Chrome Listening In To Your Room Shows The Importance Of Privacy Defense In Depth
June 19, 2015 | Telepresence Options
Story and images by Rick Falkvinge / Privacy Online
News
Yesterday, news broke that Google has been
stealth downloading audio listeners onto every
computer that runs Chrome, and transmits audio
data back to Google. Effectively, this means that
Google had taken itself the right to listen to every
conversation in every room that runs Chrome
somewhere, without any kind of consent from the
people eavesdropped on. In official statements,
Google shrugged off the practice with what amounts to "we can do that".
It looked like just another bug report. "When I start Chromium, it downloads something." Followed by strange
status information that notably included the lines "Microphone: Yes" and "Audio Capture Allowed: Yes".

Polycom Beefs Up Collaboration Suite June 17, 2015 | Telepresence Options
Story and images by Zeus Kerravala / No Jitter
We've seen a lot of chatter on No Jitter and elsewhere about the
changing business environment and the concept of the workplace of
the future. Opinions differ on what that "workplace" looks like, but
visualizing something that's so much more than a physical space is
hard. This is really about an experience or a way to work, which
vendors must keep in mind as they design tools for use in the workplace of the future.
Polycom understands this mandate, as evidenced in three new RealPresence Platform solutions it announced
this morning at InfoComm 2015. It designed the new products specifically to address the workplace of the
future by improving the user experience and productivity of collaborative engagements.
