Project Based Learning / STEM Education

It is without a doubt extremely important to equip our students with the skills to become innovators in our digital economy and prepare them for future jobs. And so, it was with this in mind that I attended the Science Expo last Thursday to witness the authentic learning happening in Stage 3. I listened as students confidently, enthusiastically and with great pride demonstrated deep understanding as they explained their projects to parents and members of our community. Thank you so much Stage 3 teachers for bringing such delightful engagement and motivation into your classrooms.

Children Arriving at School before Supervision Begins

Reminder Students are not to be left at school prior to the commencement of the before-school supervision roster at 8:45 am.

Schools often encounter the problem of parents leaving their children in the school grounds prior to the commencement of the before-school supervision roster at the school. This practice poses risks to both children and the Department - both in terms of child protection and the risk of injury.

We appreciate that many families have two working parents and may find it difficult to stay at home until school begins. However there are alternatives available so that parents can arrange appropriate supervision of their children.

We have before and after school care (BASC) on site for working families which operates from 7.00 am every school morning. Alternatively, you may be able to make arrangements with friends or neighbours for the supervision of your children. Please do not hesitate to contact the school if you have any concerns.

Zone Cross Country

Congratulations to the Cross Country team (pictured below) who represented Waitara at Rofe Park yesterday. Thank you to Mrs Dallinger and Mr Giuffre who led the team and spoke so highly of the team’s strong commitment to the competition and excellent behaviour during the day. Well done to Leo Phijidvijan who was 1st in his race and to Eva Bates who placed 4th. We wish both students well as they now go on to represent Waitara at Area. Thank you to all parents who supported our teachers to manage the team.

National Chinese Eisteddfod

Congratulations to Zhiqing (Sunny) who came 1st in the 2016 National Chinese Eisteddfod 7-9 Group and to Peter who placed 2nd.

What a lovely visit from Mrs Aberline and KA last week. Students in KA have been learning the school song and wanted to show me how well they can sing the first verse and the chorus. Congratulations KA. You were wonderful!

Lost Property

• All items of clothing are to be clearly labelled with the name of the student and their current 2016 class.

• No student is to take a hat, jumper, jacket or any other item belonging to another student.

• Students are encouraged to place items of clothing found in the playground into Lost Property located in Mrs Barrat’s classroom.

Road Safety Please think of the safety of all students when parking and dropping off your child. Do not drive to the end of Highlands Avenue and try to turn around in that small space. It is dangerous for our students. Please drop your child off further down the road so that they can walk along both paths to access the school.

The large driveway gate to the school will be closed each morning before students arrive. PLEASE DO NOT PARK ACROSS OUR NEIGHBOUR’S DRIVEWAYS.

I LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING MANY PARENTS FOR THE P&C DISCO ON FRIDAY EVENING. K-2 DISCO 5:00PM TO 6:30PM

3-6 DISCO 7:00PM TO 8:30PM

Warm regards until next time… Julie Webber Principal

Deputy Principal Report Last week I was fortunate to be able to take 2T for an art lesson. As it was reconciliation week we focused the lesson on indigenous artist, author and illustrator Sally Morgan. Sally’s art is very contemporary and colourful and each of her paintings tells a story. The students in 2T created an artwork using pastels that was inspired by Sally Morgan’s painting called ’Life’.

21st Century Learners

From Stage 3 Assistant Principal Our Stage 3 Science Expo was a great success. Teachers were thrilled at the number of families who attended and therefore were able to discuss with their own children and many others the process of design that had been undertaken to create their electrical device. Thank you.

On Tuesday and Wednesday this week all students in Stage 3 will be travelling to Parramatta to learn more about the early days of our country. They will be experiencing a day in Parramatta which will show the reasons why Parramatta was chosen as the place for the developing colony, the use of the land by the local Aboriginal clan, the importance of Parramatta River and the lives of people in the 1800s. Whilst visiting Old Government House, Parramatta Park, the Parramatta Heritage Centre, the foreshore of Parramatta River and taking a guided historical tour of Parramatta on the bus, students will be working with experienced guides, artefacts and historic items to develop their knowledge.

Netball NSW Schools Cup

On Wednesday 18th May the Senior PSSA team and Stage 3 mixed Netball team participated in the Northern Sydney region Netball NSW Schools Cup. It was impressive to watch the Senior team develop their teamwork and continue to work on improving the skills we have been developing as part of the PSSA competition. Over the day they managed a win, a draw and a loss. The mixed team were fabulous to watch and some of our male players had an opportunity to demonstrate the netball skills they have learnt through Stage 2 and 3 Sport groups. After a successful day the team won a game and lost three. Both teams demonstrated excellent teamwork and sportsmanship. It was with great excitement that a few of us had the opportunity to meet Caitlin Thwaites, a NSW Swifts player. Caitlin has previously visited the Waitara netball teams to discuss her netball journey. She took the time to chat with the Waitara players and have some photos taken. Thank you to the parents of Aisling, Tayla and Sam who volunteered to drive us on the day. A successful and fun day of Netball!

MUSIC NEWS

There have been many “opportunities to say “well done” this week to our students.

Last Wednesday our Training Band and our Senior Band gave their first performances under the leadership of Mr Adam Tomkins. I was thrilled to be able to listen to these performances and it showed the tremendous growth each student has made over the year. We welcomed many parents to the assembly and are hoping that we can increase this number over time as our students just love performing for their parents.

Following the performance Mr Tomkins presented certificates to

Band Captains Aida and Daniel Section Leaders Alice, Alyssa, Eva, Joshua, Sam and Derrick.

Congratulations to these leaders.

Last weekend was so busy with Waitara Junior Voices and Waitara Voices performing in the choral sections at the Sydney Eisteddfod. The support from parents and staff was amazing and this reflected in the student’s exhilaration when they performed. I am proud to announce that Waitara Junior Voices won their section and Waitara Voices came third. We will now wait to see which, if any of these choirs will progress to the John Lamble Choral Championship. The rules for this have changed in 2016 and the adjudicator will make the decision.
