It is hard to believe how quickly the time is flying by. Our first semester has been very exciting and productive. Our teachers have worked hard to establish positive relationships with the students and support them in their academic achievement. Kindergarten registration for the 2015-16 school year has begun. We will be having Kindergarten Round-up on December 4 th . The classrooms will be open from 4:00- 6:00 pm. Families are invited to come to the kindergarten classrooms and meet the kindergarten teachers. Each student that registers will receive a free book, “The Night Before Kindergarten.” In addition, on the first day of school in August 2015, each stu- dent in Kindergarten will receive a special New River Kindergarten T-shirt. Please get the word out to your friends and neighbors. Our Winter Wonderland sponsored by our fabulous PTSA will also be on December 4th from 3:30-6:00 pm in the Multi-Purpose Building. This is a special night where families can enjoy making crafts for the winter holidays. I want to thank all of you that contributed to the "Pasta for Pennies" fundraiser spon- sored by our Student Council. The goal was to raise $500 for the Leukemia and Lym- phoma Society. We more than doubled the goal and collected $1,367.16. Since the goal was reached the principal gets a few pies in the face. The pie throwing will occur on December 10th after Winter Band/Chorus concert for the school. The concert starts at 2:00 pm. Please join us if you'd like to see the principal get a pie in the face. Since this is the time of year for giving I want to remind you of a wonderful oppor- tunity to help our special programs at New River Elementary. The Arizona Tax Credit Program is a perfect way for you to donate money to our school. Individuals can do- nate up to $200 and married couples can donate up to $400.The money you donate will benefit our special programs, such as Homework Club, Basketball Clinic, Reading Club, Running Club, Chorus and Band. The best part of it is that the money you donate is completely returned to you when you file your taxes. Please take advantage of this opportunity to give back to the Arizona school. It’s a winner for you and the school. The final deadline for making the 2014 Arizona Tax Credit is December 31 st . I want to thank you all for the support that you have shown us so far this year. It takes a team to educate our students and we appreciate all that you do to support our staff in making sure your child has a quality education. On behalf of the New River Staff we extend our greetings and best wishes for the Holi- day season and the upcoming New Year! We hope you have an enjoyable and relaxing winter break. D.V.U.S.D. # 97 OPEN ENROLLMENT INFORMATION WHAT IS OPEN ENROLLMENT? Open Enrollment, a program enacted by the Arizona Legislature, requires all school districts to allow students the opportunity to select a school of their choice if capacity permits. DVUSD complies fully with all provisions of the statute. While most schools in DVUSD have space for Open Enrolled students, some schools are at capacity and are not currently accepting Open Enrolled students. WHO MAY APPLY FOR OPEN ENROLLMENT? Any family living in Arizona may apply for Open Enrollment into a DVUSD school. WHERE DO I OBTAIN AND SUBMIT AN OPEN ENROLLMENT APPLICATION? Applications are only available on-line, click on button at bottom of the page. Applicants may use a computer at any of the DVUSD schools or District Office in order to submit the application.

Deer Valley Unified School District Office 20402 North 15th Avenue Phoenix, AZ 85027

HOW IS APPROVAL OF AN OPEN ENROLLMENT APPLICATION DETERMINED? Approval of Open Enrollment applications is based on school and grade level availability. Using current enrollment, the district determines each school’s student enrollment, projected growth, and availa-ble space. Applicants will be notified of their acceptance or denial depending on the school capacity in the order that applications are re-ceived. Applicants who have been denied acceptance to a school at capacity are invited to attend another DVUSD school with capacity or be placed on a waiting list. Children of employees at that campus and siblings of students currently enrolled receive priority. WHAT ARE THE TIMELINES? Open Enrollment applications are accepted throughout the year for the current or next school year. For appli-cants applying for the 2015-2016 school year, apply before December 17, 2014 for priority consideration to be accepted to the school of choice. Applications submitted after that date will be reviewed and approved if the school has capacity. Families will be notified if the application has been approved, denied, or placed on a waiting list. Upon notification, the student must com-plete a transfer or registration packet to the approved school no later than 10 days after notification of the decision, or the student poten-tially forfeits the approved Open Enrollment and may need to reapply. HOW WILL I BE NOTIFIED OF THE OPEN ENROLLMENT DECISION? Applicants will be notified by the e-mail provided on the open enrollment application. IF MY CHILD IS CURRENTLY ATTENDING A DVUSD SCHOOL ON OPEN ENROLLMENT, DO I NEED TO REAPPLY? It is not necessary to reapply for Open Enrollment to the current school your child is attending. Open Enrollment status is reviewed each year by the school principal and can be revoked based on discipline issues, attendance issues, and/or any other disruptions by the student or parents that interfere with the school’s daily operations. You will receive written notification from the school’s principal if your stu-dent’s Open Enrollment has been revoked due to these issues. IF MY CHILD IS CURRENTLY ATTENDING A DVUSD SCHOOL ON OPEN ENROLLMENT AND IS BEING PROMOTED TO THE NEXT LEVEL (e.g., K-6 PROMOTING TO MIDDLE SCHOOL, K-8 PROMOTING TO HIGH SCHOOL, MIDDLE SCHOOL PROMOTING TO HIGH SCHOOL), DO I NEED TO AP-PLY? Yes, if the next level school is not your school of residence. Open enrolled students promoting from a K-6, K-8, or Middle School must com-plete an Open Enrollment application to attend the next school. For schools that feed two different feeder systems (e.g., Hillcrest Middle School feeds both Mountain Ridge High School and Sandra Day O’Connor High School), open enrolled students will be given enrollment priority to attend the school of choice provided the school and grade level have capacity. WHAT HAPPENS IF MY STUDENT IS OPEN ENROLLED INTO A SPECIAL PROGRAM (i.e., AMERICAN STUDIES ACADEMY, ROTC, RENAISSANCE) AND THEN DROPS THE PROGRAM? Students approved for Open Enrollment for a specific program must remain in good standing and enrolled in the program throughout the duration at the school or their Open Enrollment will be revoked. Students will need to reapply for Open Enrollment to that school and will only be accepted if there is capacity. IS TRANSPORTATION PROVIDED? No transportation is provided to students on Open Enrollment status. WILL MY OPEN ENROLLED STUDENT BE ABLE TO PLAY HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS? Students enrolling under the Open Enrollment process may not be eligible for participation in AIA events. Interested students and parents should contact the athletic director from the school they wish to attend for more information. WHAT HAPPENS IF WE ORIGINALLY RESIDED IN A DVUSD SCHOOL’S ATTENDANCE BOUNDARY AND THEN MOVE OUTSIDE OF THE SCHOOL BOUNDARY? A student currently attending a DVUSD school who lives in that boundary and then moves out of the school’s boundary must notify the school’s registrar within 10 days of the change in residence. At that time, the student will become a student under open enroll-ment status and may continue attending the school. Failure to complete this process may result in the student being withdrawn at the natural grading period. If the student has displayed negative behaviors or has attendance issues, the school administrator may deny the student continuing at the school under open enrolled status. WHAT CAUSES OPEN ENROLLMENT TO BE REVOKED? Once a student is accepted and attending the school of choice, the student must comply with the school's rules as reflected in the Student Rights and Responsibility handbook. Students attending a school under Open Enrollment are subject to the same policies and procedures of all Deer Valley Unified School District students. Failure to follow all policies and procedures of DVUSD may result in a denial of a future Open En-rollment Application at all schools within the Deer Valley Unified School District in which case, the student will be accepted at his/her Home School only. The student may reapply for Open Enrollment one calendar year following the revocation.

Open Enrollment may be immediately revoked for disciplinary action that results in expulsion or long-term suspension. It may also be revoked due to poor attendance or failure to follow school rules, district policies and procedures, and/or any other disruptions by the student or par-ents that interfere with the day to day running of a school. Prior to an Open Enrollment being revoked, a warning letter will be sent from the school principal. Parents, who receive a warning letter from the school, should follow up with school administration to ensure the understand-ing of the scope of changes needed to improve open enrollment status for the child. False information submitted on the application will be considered a breach of the agreement and cause for enrollment revocation. The principal shall determine whether or not revocation occurs.

WHO CAN ANSWER QUESTIONS ABOUT OPEN ENROLLMENT? Please contact Darcy at 623-376-3500 for open enrollment questions.
