The TeleHybrid is designed to work with digital andanalog telephones. This unique design is a first inthe industry. To maximize your audio quality, werecommend that you prepare your site by taking thefollowing factors into consideration:

Power Requirements

The TeleHybrid will accommodate voltagerequirements of 120Vac, 60Hz, 23W with thesupplied power module. It will alsoaccommodate other voltage requirements withan optional power transformer.

Telephone Line Requirements

Unlike other telephone hybrids, the TeleHybridconnects directly to existing digital and analogtelephone sets. A dedicated analog telephoneline is not needed to operate your TeleHybrid.

Telephone Set Requirements

The TeleHybrid will operate with multiline andsingle line telephone sets that have a detachablehandset cord at the telephone base. TheTeleHybrid will not work with “Princess” or“Trimline” style telephones that have thedialing pad built into the handset. The dialingpad must be located on the telephone base, noton the telephone handset.

Equipment Placement

The TeleHybrid should be placed next to thetelephone set and virtually anywhere within 12feet of the equipment you will be connecting to.

Step 5 (Record Option)

To record your audioconference, connect a taperecorder (not provided) to the TeleHybrid jacklabeled REC. A standard phono cable istypically supplied with most tape recorders.

Because telephones are different, you will need tomake a one-time setup to accommodate yourparticular type of telephone. Follow these step-by-step procedures:

Step 5 - Receive Audio Check

Make certain the XLRs are connected to yourexternal equipment properly. Also verify thatyour external equipment is in the properoperating mode to receive audio from and tosend audio to the TeleHybrid.

To communicate with the distant locationthrough the TeleHybrid and your externalequipment, place the handset on the TeleHybridpad.

With the TeleHybrid activated, listen for dialtone. If you hear a dial tone, go to Step 6, SendAudio Adjustment (See below.); if you do nothear a dial tone, verify One-Time Setup Steps 1-3 (Pages 8-9).

Step 6 - Send Audio Adjustment

Place a call and activate your TeleHybrid toverify the send level.

If your level is too high (distorted), changesensitivity switch 4 located behind the sideaccess panel to the ON position.

To fine adjust the send level use the slide controllocated on the bottom of the TeleHybrid. If yourlevel is too low, adjust the slide control towardposition 8 until you reach the proper send level. If your level is too high, move the slide towardposition 1.

CUSTOMER SERVICE NOTE:Gentner Communication Corporation is dedicatedto providing the best customer service. If you haveany problems or questions, please call us at:(800) 945-7730 or (801) 975-7200.

In some situations, the send-audio level (from you tothe caller) will need adjustment for optimumTeleHybrid performance. This is caused by factorssuch as the proximity of your facility to thetelephone central office and/or the type of telephonesystem you have installed in your building. To assistin sound-level adjustments, the TeleHybrid is nowequipped with SoundCheck.

SoundCheck operates based on the idea that when atelephone line is driven too hard, it will start todistort the returned audio. SoundCheck provides abuilt-in distortion analyzer to detect this, enablingyou to set up for the maximim level possible withoutcompromising your audio quality.

To perform a SoundCheck setup, follow these step-by-step instructions:

Step 1 — Studio Preparation

Ensure that the male XLR (J2) is connected toyour studio audio monitoring system, and turndown the volume on the audio amplifierconnected to your monitor speakers.

Step 2 — Power Down the TeleHybrid

Remove the DC POWER connector from therear of the TeleHybrid to power it down.

Step 3 — Call Quiet Line

Pick up your telephone handset and call1-800-283-5330 (a quiet line used for setup), ora quiet line at your site. When you hear silenceat the other end, set the handset down on theTeleHybrid, and plug back in the DC POWERconnector, restoring power to the TeleHybrid.SoundCheck should now be enabled.

Step 4 — Adjust Send Audio

Listening to your studio’s audio monitoringsystem, interpret the tone that is being emittedon your monitor speakers, and adjust theTeleHybrid’s SEND AUDIO adjustment.

Beeping: signal level too low, increase SENDAUDIO

Constant: signal level too high, decrease SENDAUDIO

The desired level should be at the transitionpoint between the beeping and constant tone.

If you cannot adjust to this transition point, change sensitivity dip switch 4 (on the right sideof the TeleHybrid) UP (ON) for all telephonetypes being used, except for the Seimens Dyad,Junior Dyad and Digit 260 Console. If usingone of these three telephone types, changesensitivity dip switch 4 DOWN (OFF).

DIGITAL/ANALOG SYSTEM NOTE:The transition point should be easy to find if using adigital telephone system (distortion for anoverdriven digital line is dramatic). However, ifconnected to an analog telephone system, thetransition point may take a little longer to locate(the distortion generated on an overdriven analogline is much gentler).

Step 5 — Exit SoundCheck Mode

Once the transition point has been located, exitSoundCheck set-up mode by removing handsetfrom the TeleHybrid, disconnecting the DCPOWER connector, waiting a few seconds, thenplugging the DC POWER connector back in.Powering down the TeleHybrid will not resetsettings made with SoundCheck. Disconnectfrom the quiet line.

Step 6 — Verify SoundCheck Settings

Make several test calls to different locations toevaluate the TeleHybrid’s performance. Ifconnected on an exceptionally clean line, theaudio level may actually need to be adjusteddown slightly from the settings indicated bySoundCheck.
