A Modern View• Communication has been a major resource to the human race by

being able to transfer information from one to another. While many different forms exist such as sign language, speaking, and body language, it is telecommunication that has changed the world throughout the last hundred or more years.

• The telecommunications system has three different things in order to transmit what is presented.

• Some major examples of today’s telecommunications are cell phones, computers, and e-mail. Before the internet was available communications have been broadcasted





Role of Telecom in a Country• Telecommunication Services play a key role in the growth of

economy, facilitating efficiency and growth across the wide range of user’s industry in any country.

• The level of Telecommunication development is a determining factor for economy, social and cultural development of a country.





State of Pakistan’s Telecom Industry

Pakistan has remained as the fastest growing mobile telecom market in Asia. Currently, the telecom sector is undergoing intense competition among the six mobile operators, one major fixed-line operator and few small

fixed-line operators. In the best interest of their long sustainability, the mobile operators are forming strategies driven towards being at lowest cost, extensive network coverage and connectivity,

innovative products and segmentation





History with Reference to Pakistan PAKISTAN POST AND TELEGRAPH At the time of independence and telecommunication services were performed by a single department known as Pakistan post and telegraph (P&T) PAKISTAN TELEPHONE AND TELEGRAPH (PT&T)

The first step towards reform in telecommunication sector was made in 1962.when the ayyub khan government decided to split up the (PT&T) department into two separate departments Pakistan post and Pakistan telephone & telegraph (PT&T)

PAKISTAN TELECOMMUNICATION CORPORATION (PTC) On December 5th ,1990 the PT&T department was transformed into

PTCL Pakistan telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) is a company established to undertake the telecommunication business formally carried on by Pakistan in Jan 1996.

• Under the PTCL reorganization act, 1996 the telecommunication sectors were split up into four bodies.

• Pakistan Telecommunication Company limited (PTCL)• · Pakistan telecommunication authority (PTA)• · National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC)• · Frequency allocation board (FAB)





PTA• Pakistan telecommunication authority is a regulatory body

responsible for monitoring the telecommunication business in Pakistan. It frames rules and regulation for private telecom companies such as

• mobile phone companies, • internet service providers, • paging companies and pay card phone companies.

• It also issues licenses to the new companies in entering to this business.





National Telecom Corp• National Telecom Corporation (NTC) is responsible to provide the telecommunication services to the various departments of government and armed services.





PTCL• Pakistan Telecommunication Company limited is the primary provider of telecommunications services in Pakistan. • The range of its services includes

• basic telephone telegraph, fax, telex, email, digital cross connect, public data network, internet, isdn, broadband, IPTV, teleconferencing and other digital facilities.





Mobile Telephony in Pakistan





INSTAPHONE

• Instaphone introduced mobile telephony in Pakistan in 1991 with AMS technology. It holds honor of Pioneering coverage to an ever expanding network of 185 Cities and pioneering consumer-favorable initiatives such as; Instaone, Xcities, Pre-paid plans, Calling Party Pays, low end pre-paid cards, 12 months Free Incoming, Roam Free Incoming, Interconnect SMS services and International SMS services.





• Mobilink GSM (PMCL) started its operations in 1994. The first cellular service provider to operate on a 100% digital GSM technology in Pakistan, offer both postpaid (Indigo) and prepaid (JAZZ).

• At the top of the list of Pakistani mobile companies is• Mobilink, the Pakistani unit of Egypt-based telecom company Orascom. It

has been in Pakistan since 1994 till today With 32 million subscribers by 2011

• it has the largest market share. Its shares are listed on the Egyptian and London stock markets (OTLD).

• Ufone GSM is a cellular telephony which start its service in January 28, 2001 under the brand name of Ufone from Islamabad, And launched by the PTCL.

• Ufone, a wholly owned subsidiary of Pakistan Telecommunication Co. Ltd (PTCL), is now under the control of Etisalat group of UAE. With 20 million subscribers it is the runner up. For those in Pakistan it is the one company where they can easily invest locally.

Warid, owned by the Abu Dhabi group of the United Arab Emirates and sister of Wateen group started its operation in may 25, 2005.

Recently it sold 30% share to SingTel. Warid started it services in Pakistan May 2005. Since than Warid Telecom successfully launched the services covering pakistan

• Telenor acquired the license for providing GSM services in Pakistan in April 2004, and had launched its services commercially in Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Karachi.• Norway Telenor, a recent entrant with about a billion US dollar invesment in Pakistan has been doing well• Currently having 25 million subscriber.• Telenor stock is listed in the Oslo stock market (TEL) and Nasdaq NY (TELN).• Mainly have two Packages

After it got acquired by China Mobile it was rebranded as Zong and launched one of the most successful and aggressive campaigns. Cellular Subscribers Surpass 105 million Mark

• Cellular users in the country have crossed 105 million mark at the end of Feb 2011. According to data released by Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, Mobilink remains the largest cellular company with 33 percent market share while Telenor remains second with Ufone and Warid to Follow.

• Pakistan has also had some strategic wins in the international telecommunication scene. This month Pakistan won the council seat of International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and Chairman Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) was elected as member of Radio Regulation Board of ITU. Pakistan also holds the office of President in Asia Pacific Telecommunity. ITU has also announced that it will setup a Center of Excellence in Pakistan for telecommunication regulation and policy.





Need More For Pakistan

• There is still a long way to go for Pakistan telecom industry. Pakistan needs to increase telecom research and development work within the country.

Two top Chinese telecom equipment firms have announced their plans to collaborate with Pakistan: Huawei is working with UET Lahore and ZTE will setup R&D center in Islamabad.

The goal of the policy makers should be to increase the rate of transfer of technology from abroad, broaden the pool of local skilled workforce and accelerate the local production of telecom equipment and handset parts etc.





• The main Telecommunication challenge in Pakistan is to multiply the number of lines, increased telephony penetration and geographic coverage leading to a more balanced distribution of the essential benefits of the services. And to introduce high technology products to compete with the high speed growth in the world for prosperous in the country.
