History with Reference to Pakistan PAKISTAN POST AND TELEGRAPH At the time of independence and telecommunication services were performed by a single department known as Pakistan post and telegraph (P&T) PAKISTAN TELEPHONE AND TELEGRAPH (PT&T)

The first step towards reform in telecommunication sector was made in 1962.when the ayyub khan government decided to split up the (PT&T) department into two separate departments Pakistan post and Pakistan telephone & telegraph (PT&T) 

PAKISTAN TELECOMMUNICATION CORPORATION (PTC) On December 5th ,1990 the PT&T department was transformed into

PTCL Pakistan telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) is a company established to undertake the telecommunication business formally carried on by Pakistan in Jan 1996.

PTA• Pakistan telecommunication authority is a regulatory body

responsible for monitoring the telecommunication business in Pakistan. It frames rules and regulation for private telecom companies such as

• mobile phone companies, • internet service providers, • paging companies and pay card phone companies.

• It also issues licenses to the new companies in entering to this business.

• Mobilink GSM (PMCL) started its operations in 1994. The first cellular service provider to operate on a 100% digital GSM technology in Pakistan, offer both postpaid (Indigo) and prepaid (JAZZ).

• At the top of the list of Pakistani mobile companies is• Mobilink, the Pakistani unit of Egypt-based telecom company Orascom. It

has been in Pakistan since 1994 till today With 32 million subscribers by 2011

• it has the largest market share. Its shares are listed on the Egyptian and London stock markets (OTLD).

• Ufone GSM is a cellular telephony which start its service in January 28, 2001 under the brand name of Ufone from Islamabad, And launched by the PTCL.

• Ufone, a wholly owned subsidiary of Pakistan Telecommunication Co. Ltd (PTCL), is now under the control of Etisalat group of UAE. With 20 million subscribers it is the runner up. For those in Pakistan it is the one company where they can easily invest locally.

Recently it sold 30% share to SingTel. Warid started it services in Pakistan May 2005. Since than Warid Telecom successfully launched the services covering pakistan

Cellular Subscribers Surpass 105 million Mark

Telecommunication Honor

• Pakistan has also had some strategic wins in the international telecommunication scene. This month Pakistan won the council seat of International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and Chairman Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) was elected as member of Radio Regulation Board of ITU. Pakistan also holds the office of President in Asia Pacific Telecommunity. ITU has also announced that it will setup a Center of Excellence in Pakistan for telecommunication regulation and policy.

Need More For Pakistan

• There is still a long way to go for Pakistan telecom industry. Pakistan needs to increase telecom research and development work within the country.

Two top Chinese telecom equipment firms have announced their plans to collaborate with Pakistan: Huawei is working with UET Lahore and ZTE will setup R&D center in Islamabad. 

The goal of the policy makers should be to increase the rate of transfer of technology from abroad, broaden the pool of local skilled workforce and accelerate the local production of telecom equipment and handset parts etc.
