What are “Course Readings”?• Lists of online resources chosen for a course or subject area

• Examples of resources found in course readings:

Items from online library databases Online articles or the full versions of magazines, journals, newspapers Pre-defined searches

List of books available in the library

List of videos/dvds available in the library

Web sites

Items on reserve in the library– Teacher notes, solutions, etc.– Paper articles, book chapters, etc. (with copyright licenses)

Why use Course Readings?

• Course specific electronic material – To enhance your students– To supplement a textbook– To replace a textbook– To read for an assignment– To use in a presentation – To discuss in class– To use as part of an assessment tool

How are Course Readings created?

1. Contact your liaison librarian.

2. The librarian will consult with you to develop the outline and a list keywords, subjects, etc.

3. The librarian searches for the resources and sends you lists of items to select from.

4. The librarian creates your readings list in the Course Readings System.

5. When finished the librarian sends you a link to the list that can be added to MySeneca.

• CAN463– Problem: could not find an appropriate

textbook– Solution: professor chose 22 articles from

library databases in lieu of using a textbook– Value for student: no textbook cost, material

is current and hand-picked by their professor

• MTH173– Problem: 8 booklets (hundreds of pages) of

math solutions that multiple sections of students were required to photocopy

– Solution: scan all booklets and post online with a password

– Value for student: 24/7 access, don’t have to print pages, don’t have to deal with the photocopier

Techniques for Searching

• Boolean searching is a way to combine the keywords from your topic so that you can effectively search the databases.

• Combine your keywords in three ways. – Each will result in a different set of search results.

• Operators:

• AND: keyword one AND keyword two

• OR: keyword one OR keyword two

• NOT: keyword one NOT keyword two

• These three words - AND, OR, NOT are called Boolean operators.
