    mmmmmvxl'm tainager, y'know,and I love seein'new places and new things'Twiggy . . .Her very name has become a

magic word to teenagers all overthe world. In less than one year, this 17 year old enchantress hascaptured the hearts of teenagersand adults alike.

What is her secret ingredient? What magical potent does thisyoung lady use? Twiggy uses charm. As her manager, boyfriend, mentorand idol, Justin de Villeneuve saidat a recent interview, "Twiggy doesnot know how not to be honest. Thesecret of her success is that she isnot a myth, she lives up to whatthey say about her."

Twiggy arrived in New York Cityon March 21, 1967. Never beforein our history has a model ever re-ceived such adulation or fan follow-ing. She is not an actress or moviestar and generally a model has alimited following. This is not the

case with Twiggy. She took the cityby storm, then went on to othercities. When she arrived in New York a

reporter candidly asked her, "Doyou think you are beautiful?"

Twiggy rolled those lovely blueeyes of hers and without a mo-ment's hesitation gave her answer,"Not really."

Then when she was asked abouther 31-22-32 figure, Twiggy smiledand said, "It's not really what youcall a figure, is it?"

Her views on New York werehonest and to the point, "I'mfrightened of New York. They giveparties there all the time, don'tthey? I'm frightened silly of par-ties."

Then she added, "I want to seethe Empire State Building and goto the top." Twiggy did see theEmpire State Building and much

more. The people of New Yorkgave her the key to the city.Twiggy will never forget her tripbecause something wonderful butsad happened to her there.A fan who was also to interview

her bought an Easter duck forTwiggy. She was enchanted by thelittle thing. Photographers tookpictures of the little duck cuddledup under Twiggy's chin. You mightthink that the girl had given her amillion dollars. She was like a littlechild with the duck, but tragically,it died. Twiggy openly cried overthe loss of her little friend.

Twiggy commented, "I hate ani-mal books and animal films be-cause even if they are happy, there's always some sad bit inthem."

Perhaps, herein, lies the secretof Twiggy's rise to fame. Sheopenly remarks that without Justinshe would not be where she istoday. It was Justin who got herstarted in modeling. She clings tohim when the crowds start gather-ing and when they are with only afew people or if there are photog-raphers taking shots of her, shemust constantly go over to Justinand have him reassure her. Thereshe will stand in her boyish, al-most elfin way and wrap her thinarms around his neck. She adoreshim and Justin adores her. Youcan see that she depends on himfor guidance; that she trusts himimplicitly.

During an interview she wasasked if her family called herTwiggy or Leslie. Her reply, "Myparents call me Leslie of course.Justin only calls me Leslie whenhe's mad at me."How did she get the name ofTwiggy? "Me family used to callme Sticks, but Justin changed itto Twiggy."

It is hard to believe that lessthan a year ago this young ingenuewas virtually unknown to us. Shestarted off getting just $25 perhour and was happy to be earningthat much, but then somethingmagical happened. Twiggy justhappened to be at the right placeat the right time. Three years agoshe would have never had a

She's beautiful. She's the living expression of everything fab. And she's onl17. She's Twiggy.Twiggy is very natural and candid, especially about herself. When askedabout her figure, she laughed, "It's not really what you call a figure, is it?

She is absolutely the coolest. When a reporter asked her what her philosophy of life was, she just looked around theroom, then looked at Justin, rolled her eyes, and replied, "I haven't got one!"chance as a model, but the time isright for her now. She earns ashigh as $250 an hour at present. Not to mention that she promotesand models her own fashions.

Twiggy doesn't have a weightproblem; thinness, instead, runsin her family. She loves to eat andeats everything, fattening or not. When she is not working shelounges around in slacks andsweaters. Her day starts at 7:30A.M. and she is in bed by 10:00 or10:30. Twiggy requires 10 hourssleep a night.

She adores her fans, but has abody guard. Even at her young age,she realizes that fans, even thoughthey love you, can cause youbodily harm. Twiggy was amazedat the fans she has in America andat times was a little frightened ofthe crowds because they were sovast.

An interviewer asked her whatshe dreamed of when she wasasleep. Twiggy replied, "Somepeople remember what they dream, but I don't."

Her hope, ever since she couldremember was to be a model. Dur-ing interviews she makes it quiteplain that she has no desire to bean actress. Before I get into the question and an-swer part of my column I would like tosay this; never be afraid to ask yourfamily doctor personal questions, orhave him do an examination. Please re-member teens, that this dedicated manspent many years in learning his pro-fession. His knowledge is there for yourbenefit.

It is sometimes very difficult for ateen to go for an examination, especiallywhen she reaches the age of awareness. Most doctors have nurses in their officeto be in the room with you while he isdoing the examination. To a doctor ora nurse the sight of your disrobed orpartially disrobed body is an impersonalthing. Always remember this; they willnot notice if you have a mole on yourleft shoulder or a pimple on your tummy.

Learn to feel at ease with your doctoror dentist. They are here to help you. Itis their job to listen to whatever prob-lems you may have that your parentscannot advise you on.

Most medical men, you will find, havea tremendous sense of humor and areactually very groovy individuals who un-derstand the present scene of things.Don't shut them out of your life bykeeping worries to yourself. On the other hand, if you have some

questions to ask me, I will to the bestof my ability give you an honest andfrank answer. Remember that the adulthas one big advantage over the teen:we've been there already. The scenemay change a bit, new problems arise, but essentially, the basic everyday prob-lems were the same ones we had. Yourworld is going at a quicker pace, that'sall.

Our first letter is from a disturbedyoung lady from Framingham, Mass.:

Dear Miss Andrews,I'm a sixteen year old and am a junior

in high school. I've been dating this boyfor four months now. He is very popularin school as well as out of school. Mostof the girls would give anything to havea date with him.

Everything has been fine up untilnow. Mark smokes and drinks a little.Last weekend one of his buddies held aparty in the finished romper room oftheir home. Let me tell you Miss An-drews, they really romped. The boy'sparents were out for the night and liquorwas served. My parents have always been quite

strict with me, especially where alcoholis concerned. My dad says that when Iam old enough to handle it and out ofschool that is my business, but whileI'm still living under his roof, no alcohol.

Mark really got nasty when I wouldn'tdrink a highball. All I had was coke.Other girls from my class drank morethan they should and one of them threwup before the boys took them home. Tome this isn't my idea of fun and games.

There was a big fight on the wayhome. Mark called me a real Dorf and aloser. This didn't go over so big withme. I enjoy a good time and I am not aDorf or a loser, but I will not drink. I feelguilty about it as though 1 were reallyletting my parents down in a big way.As for smoking, I tried it and really don'tdig it at all. It irritates my throat andleaves a terrible taste in my mouth; sowhy should 1 do something that I hate?Mark hasn't asked me out since and I

really liked him a lot.My question is; was I wrong or right

not to go along with the crowd? ShouldI have had something to drink and thenlied about it to my folks? Do you thinkMark will call me again?Dear Confused,First of all, let me shake your hand forbeing brave enough to be a non-con-formist in a too conforming world. Toomany girls go along with the gang andend up in sad shape, or even worse, withno shape at all.

You do not have to be full of alcoholto have fun. Many teens feel ttey haveto drink to lose their inhibitions. Theonly trouble is, they do not know howto handle their inhibitions and they endup in serious trouble.

Secondly, if your folks knew that al-cohol was served at the party, you wouldhave not been allowed to go. If the boys'parents knew alcohol was served theywould have never gone out and left thehouse in his care. What if someone hadhad an accident on the way home andthe police discovered alcohol on theirbreath? That sure would have been amess!

If Mark is wise he will admire you fornot conforming with the others. It is al-ways harder to be brave and be able tosay no. You will make friends and losethem because of your beliefs, but hold.fast, Confused. If Mark doesn't call you, then HE is the Dorf, not you. Yourgirlfriends who drank are in for troublegalore. They will learn that alcohol hassome pretty frightening effects on yourmind and body.

If Mark has cooled your romance,51

    A woman's body.Architecturally, quite in-

teresting. To a man. But notto the woman who owns one. Most women tend to ignoretheir own bodies.Do you? Do you checkyour body, particularly your

breasts, every month, for anylump or thickening? You.should. A lump or thickeningin the breast or elsewherecould be a warning signal ojcancer. A nd cancer is easier tocure when it's detected early.Sophia Loren knows the

seven warning signals of can-cer. So should you:

1 . Unusual bleeding or dis-charge. 2 . A lump or thicken-ing in the breast or elsewhere.3. A sore that does not heal.4. Change in bowel or bladderhabits. 5. Hoarseness orcough. 6. Indigestion or diffi-culty in swallowing. 7. Changein a wart or mole.

If a signal lasts longer thantwo weeks, see your doctorwithout delay.

It makes sense to know the7 warning signals of cancer.American Cancer Society.

don't worry. There will be another onealong, one who will perhaps be braveenough to say no to drink. If a fellow in-sists that a girl smoke, he is for thebirds. He only wants to impress his bud-dies. A fellow does not admire you forthe way you hold a cigarette in yourhand or hold your liquor. He digs you foryou yourself. If he doesn't, then he isimmature and you're better off withouthim.

    Miss ADear Miss Andrews,

I have acne and feel very aware of it.I know that boys don't ask me out be-cause of it. i have used tube after tubeof jazz from the drug store, but I stillcan't clear it up.

    What should I do?Mary B.

Dear Acne Sufferer,Acne is definitely a problem for a

Dermatologist. He is a medical doctorwho went to school for two to four yearsto specialize in disorders of the skin.

The first thing he will probably do isput you on a diet. Not a diet to loseweight, but to clear up your blood. Ifyou are eating too many potato chips, french fries, chocolate, too much soda, and so on, you must decrease your in-take of these foods. Or it will be whatyou teens commonly refer to as "ends-ville" for your skin.

He will give you the proper medica-tion and advice; he may even recom-mend special soaps to use. Make an ap-pointment now. Don't let the conditionbecome worse.

Miss ADear Miss Andrews,I could never ask my doctor this, as Iwould be too embarrassed. What do youdo when your favorite fellow calls youup and asks you to go to the beach, orto the local pool, and you've got youroeriod? You can't just come right outand say, "well, too bad, I can't go swim-mingit's one of those days." It wouldbe just too gross! What should a girl say?

    Sally H.

Dear Sally H.Well Sally, you've got a problem that

is as old as time. All girls have foundthemselves in this very touchy problemat one time or another.- My answer toyou is, play it cool. Beat around thebush. Tell him you think you're comingdown with a cold, and will it be all rightto sit around the pool or just sit on thebeach. If he is a smart guy and has

some grey matter upstairs he will pickthe hint up right away. Then he may sug-gest bowling or something else. Afteryou've pulled this a few times it won'tbe so hard. You'd be surprised at theexcuses you can come up with.

    Miss A.

Dear Miss Andrews,I'm 15 and my breasts are small. I

know this is the Twiggy trend, but Idon't dig it at all. Would you suggestthat t wearfalsies?

    C. G.

Dear Twiggy Hater,My answer to you is ... be yourself.

You can fool some of the people someof the time and so on, as good old AbeLincoln put it, but honey, you can't fooleveryone. The other chicks will notice it in gym

and the locker room. They will spreadthe word around and you will find peoplemaking remarks about it to you.

Get a good book and do some exer-cises. You would be amazed what thiswill do for you. Go swimming as muchas possible in the summer and join theY in the winter. Swimming is the great-est for helping develop the bust. When anyone ever asks me about

falsies I can't help but recall an in-cident in high school. This friend ofmine wore falsies and she was taking awide swing on the blackboard, chalk inhand, when she lost one. Luckily for her,I was in the seat near the blackboardand I took care of the situation. Fromthat day on, she never wore falsiesagain. She was just too humiliated andembarrassed. A boy saw what happenedtoo, and soon it was all over school. So you see, we even had falsie prob-

lems in high school way back in thefifties.

    Miss A.

Well, gals, that is all we have timeand space for this week. Please keepthe letters coming, and I'll try to answerall your questions for you.

It frightens Twiggy to be fa-mous, actually. "I never think ofbeing famous. I mean, famouspeople are all unhappy. I hate tobe sad."

She tells you right off that sheisn't glamourous or beautiful, andthat she doesn't think much of herfigure. She is mature enough, atthe tender age of 17, to realizehow fleeting fame can be and itdoesn't seem to bother her in theleast.

Twiggy is the most refreshingthing that has happened in themodeling profession for manyyears. It could well be that thepublic is weary of the aloof, so-phisticated models with their darkglasses and their phony airs.Twiggy is just like the girl nextdoor. She is pure, fresh and whole-some. Twiggy is something we

have badly been in need of.The sophisticates and the aloof

phonys will make their remarks, but the remarks will only run offTwiggy's back. Her innocence willnot let them get to her, now orever. Here is a girl who has cap-tured the hearts of millions in justthe city of New York alone, yet onelittle duck captured her heart andshe cried like a baby when it died. She was genuinely touched andcrest-fallen. Through this one actof tenderness and love Twiggygained more fans then if she hadadvertised for it.

Twiggy has a brilliant careerahead of her. She has the love andadmiration of millions of teen-agers, and will continue to endurebecause of her naturalness anddown-to-earth charm. She is sprin-kled with star dust and some of ithas rubbed off on us all. Her startowers high above all the others;it will continue to rise like a brightmeteor in the heavens as long asshe remains simply and beautifullyjust plain . . . Twiggy. y
