DescriptionTeelrotary gear pumps have a limited self priming capability and use the simple principle of two gears rotating in a closely fitted housing. Witheveryrevolution of the pump shaft a definite amountofliquid isdrawn into the pump through the suction port. Pumpcan be used for spraying, rec irculat ing, c leaning,transfer, etc. Liquid temperature range is-40F. to+21 0F. M aterial being pumped must be compatiblewith pump construction.Special Characteristics:Models1P765thru 1P770 feature a bronze bearing

and are recommended for intermittent service orcontinuous duty applications with low pressureneeds.Models1P771 thru1P776feature a c arbon-graphitebearing and are recommended for c ontinuous service high pressure applications.Models 1P777 thru 1P781 are basically the same asModels 1P771 thru 1P776. In addition, they featurean adjustable relief valve which permits recirculation of l iquid to avoid damage to the pump whentemporary blockage of discharge line occurs.

nstallation1. Locate pump as close to the fluid sou rce aspos:sible,making the suction line as short and directas possible.

NOTE: Unit should be placed whe re it is protectedfrom the weather and extremes of heat, cold andhumidity.2. Mount the unit on a solid found ation.NOTE: It is very important that the pump berigidly mounted to a substantial base and that

alignment between the pump shaft and pumpdriver be maintained. Pump misalignment is thegreatest contributor to gear and bearing wearand must be avoided. Many pump mountings actas noise amplif iers. A rubber pad und erthe pumpbase will help reduce the noise level.3. Piping:a. Suction: Avoid excessive lengths or numberof fittings and bends in the,suction line. It isrecommended that the same size pipe as thepump ports be used or in cases requiringlengthy piping that the next larger size pipe beused. To aid posit ive priming a foot valveshould be installed below the liquid level atthe end of the suction line. If it is suspectedthat solid co ntaminates may be present in theliquid thenafilter should a lso be placed in thisl ine.All f i t t ings must be air and l iquid t ight.b. Discharg e: If a shut-off valve is required in thedischarge l ine consideration should be giventoprovidinga pressure relief for the pu mp . Ifthe pump does not have a relief valve it isrecommended that aTeelModel1P786Pressure Relief Valve be installed fo r added pum pprotection. Shutt ing off the discharge withoutprovid ing a pressure relief can cause extreme

over-pressures which can result in pumpdamage and/or m otor fai lure. Globe valves orother restrictive valves should not be used asthe shutoff mechan ism as they are restrictivein nature and will seriously affect the pumpperformance.NOTE: Discharge piping may be one size largerthan suction piping.4. Drive connections:

NOTE: Teel Rotary Gear Pumps wil l operateequally well in either direction. W hen looking atthe pump drive shaft end and rotating the shaftclockwise, the discharge port is on the right handside. When turning counterclockwise the discharge port is on the left hand side.a. Direct Drive:Adirect connected pump to electric m otor drive throug h a Lovejoy (or similar)Flexible Coupling is recommended, to al lowfor possible shaft misalignment.b. Pulley Drive: In some cases a reduction inpump speed is essential. This may be acco mplished throu gh a belt and pulley drive. Bear inmind, however, that the belt tension adds aside thrust to the pump drive shaft which results in extra bearing loading and wear withresult ing shortened pump life. A ball bearingpil low block to sup port the belt load is advisable.(Figure 1)c. For pulley driven pu mps, a singleV (A or 4Lsection) V belt is satisfactory for drive sizesand speeds up to 1 HP 3450 RPM. For largerdr ive s izes, dou ble V bel ts are reco mmended.Ma ximum pump RPM is 1725.

OperationFor long life, prime pump before start-up. Careshould be taken at all times to avoid dry running asthis will cause increased wear of the gears and bearings, reduce pump performance, and shortenedpump life.Gear pumps are bu ilt to very close tolerances and this tolerance must no t be disturbe d. Theliquids must, therefore, be free of all abrasives.Sand,silt, wettable powders, etc., must beavoided.PERFORMANCEThe pump relationship between volume (G.P.M.),pressure (P.S.I.), speed (R.P.M.) and horsepower isshown.All data is actual test results p um ping waterat 7 F. When pumping a more viscous liquid aslowerspeed,a larger pipe size pum p, and possiblya larger motor must be selected.PRESSURE RELIEF VALVETeel1P777 thru 1P781 Pumps are supplied with abuilt-in pressure relief valve. This valve is fully adjustable and may be used to set an establishedsystem operating pressure orasa system re lief valve toprevent damage whe n the discharge line is shut off.Screwing the adjusting stem- in increases thesystem relief pressure while moving it o ut decreasesthe pressure, (valve is not preset at the factory andmust be adjusted at time of installation). The reliefvalve may be moved from one side of the pumpcover to the other depending on the pum protation.It must always be on the same side of the pum p asthe discharge port.The bu ilt-in relief valve function s as a safety valve torelease internal pump and system pressures. Thisrelief valve should be used to protect the systemfrom high pressures; it is not a pressure regulatingvalve. Pump will overheat if discharge is shut off forextended intervals (more than 30 seconds). On ex

tended shut-off app lications, a separate by-pass, located in the discharge line is recom men ded, such asa Teel Model1P786Pressure Re lief Valve.Maintenance

WARNING: MAKE CERTAIN THAT THE POWERSOURCE IS DISCONNE CTED BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO SERVICE OR DISASSEMBLE ANY COMPONENTS IFTHE POWER DISCONNECTISOUT-OF-SIGHT, LOCK IT IN THE OPEN POSITION ANDTAG TO PREVENT APPLICATION OF POWER.LUBRICATIONTeel rotary gear pumps are provided with a leak-proofzerk grease fittings for periodic lubrication. It is recommended that each pump be lubricated with aquali ty water pump grease at least every 8 operatinghours.Use Texaco Sta rfax lubricant.CLEANINGClean the suction line filter at regular intervals.ELECTRIC MOTOR (Not Supplied)Properly selected and installed electric motors arecapable of operating for years with minimal maintenance. Periodically clean dirt accumulations fromopen-type motors, especially in and around ventopenings, preferably by vacuuming (avoids imbedding dirt in windings). Oil and maintain as recommended by motor manufacturer.GENERALCheck the pump to m otor shaft alignme nt at regularintervals.Periodically check that electrical connections aretight.Pump should be draine d if placed in an area that issubject to freezing temperatures.
