It would seem that Pinnacle Point Resorts has been put into provisional liquidation following court rulings in favour of a major bank as well as a shareholder in the Pinnacle Point Group. From what we can gather this will not affect the homeowners on the estate but might affect the course and club membership. No-one seems sure how this will affect other developments in Clarens and Wedgewood outside of Port Elizabeth. Golf Director Jason Totos confirmed that the Pinnacle Course is in good condition and welcomes all golfers to enjoy the course.

L ast month at Firestone Country Club, Keegan Bradley had a chance towin the World Golf ChampionshipsBridgestone Invitational before what the

25-year-old called a “horrifying” back-nine 41 sent him tail-tucked and tumbling down down the leaderboard.

The way he so “completely lost it” that afternoon scared Bradley, and he immediately sought some words of wisdom from his sports psychologist Bob Rotella and instructor Jim McLean. Phil Mickelson and Camilo Villegas offered more perspective only those who play the game at the highest level can understand.

So when Bradley had another chance to win on an even bigger stage at the 93rd PGA Championship a week later, he was ready. So what if Bradley triple-bogeyed the 15th hole at the Atlanta Athletic Club to fall five shots off the pace? He didn’t hang his head. Bradley simply concentrated on the fact that he had three holes left to turn things in his favour – and that’s exactly what he did.

A birdie at the 16th hole was the first step.

Ditto for that 40-footer Bradley drained on the par-3 17th, a putt that he said he would remember for the rest of his life – and he’ll have the fist-pumping highlights to show for it.

By the time Bradley hit his approach shot to the 18th green, he was tied for the lead with Jason Dufner, who was stumbling down the stretch not unlike the PGA TOUR rookie had done the previous week. And this time, Bradley seized the opportunity, making birdie on the first hole of the three-hole aggregate playoff and parring out for the career-defining win.

“It feels unbelievable,” Bradley said. “It seems like a dream and I’m afraid I’m going to wake up here in the next five minutes and it’s not going to be real.”

Not to worry. The gleaming silver Wanamaker Trophy – the one he photographed with the camera in his cell phone after he sat down in the media centre is now sitting on his mantel piece at home. And there are some other pretty tantalising things to consider now that Bradley has become the

first player to win in his Major championship debut since Ben Curtis at the 2003 British Open.

“Ever since I was 10 years old, I’ve kind of flown under the radar,” he said. “I’ve been having a good year, and that’s just the way it happens with me, which is fine. I was happy with it. It’s cool to be thought of as one of those guys now. I’ve always wanted to win tournaments and win Majors, which I can’t believe this thing is sitting next to me. It’s an honour to be even thought of in that category.”

Loftsson once played 63 holes in one one day

Olafur Loftsson had never attended a PGA TOUR event before he teed it up in the Wyndham

Championship last month to become the first golfer from Iceland to take part in one. Loftsson, who attends college in America, received a sponsor’s exemption for the Wyndham after he won a tournament called the Cardinal Amateur. It was big news back home, and two TV crews from Iceland flew to Greensboro to chronicle his experience. Iceland has a population of about 320 000 and Loftsson says golf is the second most popular sport behind soccer. An estimated 16 000 Icelanders are affiliated with golf clubs and there are nearly 70 golf courses in the country, mostly links style layouts. “We only play about four to five months a year because of the harsh weather conditions … but it’s growing very fast,” said Loftsson who won the Icelandic Championship in 2009, following in the footsteps of his father Loftur, and his dream is to play on the PGA TOUR. Iceland is so far north that there are summer days when the sun basically shines all day - and night. Loftsson once played 63 holes in one one day. He doesn’t remember how many hours it took him - but just said that you need to take advantage of the good days when they come in Iceland. He shot 68-70 in the Wyndham to miss the cut by one.

It’s a pretty powerful combination: Taiwan’s Yani Tseng, the hottest golfer in the world right now, and South Africa’s Gary Gilchrist, regarded as one of the top swing

coaches on the planet.Tseng, at 22, is the youngest player - male

or female – in the game’s history to win five Majors. Tiger Woods was 24 when he reached that milestone, former women’s world No 1 Annika Sorenstam 32. And Patty Berg, who collected a record 16 Major titles in a stellar career unequalled by any other woman, was 25 when she captured No 5.

Yani, who only turns 23 next year, has already bagged 17 pro wins so far and - as an aside – turned down a $25-million endorsement deal from a company in China because it stipulated that she change her

citizenship to Chinese.Gilchrist has worked with Tseng for four of

her five Major victories, including this year’s LPGA Championship and Women’s British Open. His CV isn’t half bad either. A former South African amateur international, he won the Sunshine Tour’s Tour School in 1989 and would win three times on the Winter Tour in the next five years.

But although he enjoyed playing, he soon discovered that his real passion was coaching. A spell followed as a trainee at the David Leadbetter Academy in America and it was quickly apparent that he had a flair for teaching the game. “Lead” soon had Gary helping him look after PGA Tour players like Ernie Els, Nick Price, David Frost, Mark O’Meara and Andy Bean.

Then the Durban-born former Springbok golfer made another career move, this time into unchartered territory – junior golf. He’s been a massive success and in the last decade or so Gary has coached 75 Junior All-Americans, two US Amateur champions, two US Junior Girls champions, one NCAA women’s champion, and one US Public Links champion who just happened to be Michelle Wie.

Today he heads up the world-renowned Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy in Howey-in-the-Hills in Florida, and his number one client is the amazing, long-hitting Tseng.

“Gary’s a really good coach and he’s always been very postive,” says the soft-spoken Yani. “He’s helped me a lot with my swing and he keeps it (the instruction) simple. And the one thing I really like is he told me that we need to

build confidence with every shot. Another is to always think like a champion.

“He’s open-minded and because I’m very much a feel player, he can teach that feel to. And you need feel to be the No 1 player. I really trust him and what he wants me to do both on the physical and mental side,” adds the Taiwanese, who plays with Adams golf equipment.

Gilchrist, for his part, says it was never his goal to become a famous instructor. “My dream is to support young people in realising their potential and dreams,” he confesses. “I love to train up young people and help them develop a future – both in golf and life.”

Gilchrist has partnered his academy with a well-established private, independent co-ed college preparatory boarding and day school in Florida. Besides the golf coaching, a rigorous academic programme is followed and the students are taught a holistic approach to life.

Gary is very aware that being on this planet is not all about golf. He sees Yani as a young person who loves life, and when she’s in town he gives her coveted basketball tickets for Orlando Magic games, and encourages her to make sure she’s living a balanced social life off the course.

Because of his commitments at the Academy, he can’t always follow her to tournaments around the world. But the two do communicate a good deal by email. “And that,” he says with a chuckle, “consists mainly of sending her congratulatory messages after yet another win!”

George Coetzee’s obsession with darts may be one of the reasons he’s been performing so well on the European Tour this year.

The 25-year-old from Pretoria Country Club has been telling people that darts is his game, and golf just a hobby. He’s only kidding of course, although he is adamant that throwing darts helps his putting because it keeps his eye in and develops that all-important “feel” a golfer needs on the greens.

“I just love darts and play as often as I can and it’s a lot like putting,” he says. “You have to make sure you take it back the right way and then accelerate through, just like putting.”

Darts aside, George’s golfing “hobby” played out on the fairways of the world this year has earned him well in excess of R6-million, his latest big pay-cheque being one of a tad over R1-million for finishing tied second in the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles in Scotland.

In a five-man sudden-death play-off that went all of five holes - it was down to just Coetzee and veteran Thomas Bjorn at the death before the Dane sealed victory with a birdie. “But I’m proud of the way I hung in there,” Coetzee said in an interview conducted by the European Tour.

“I handled it well (the play-off) and made some crucial birdie putts to stay alive. I’ll take second place this time, but I learnt a lot and hopefully I’ll finish it off next time.”

Coetzee lost his card in his first full season on the European Tour last year, but regained his playing privileges for 2011 at the Q-School before heading back to South Africa last summer where he won the Telkom PGA at Country Club Johannesburg with a stunning 27-under-par 261 aggregate. That, he felt, was confirmation of his potential. Now, six months down the line, he had earned 588 571 euros (almost exactly R6-million) as of the beginning of September.

That put him 28th in the 2011 Race to Dubai, virtually guaranteeing him a spot in the lucrative end-of-year Dubai World Championship where the top 60 in the standings make the grade. Clearly, Coetzee is the new kid on the block when it comes to South African golf.

Besides being passionate about golf and darts, Coetzee is a Liverpool fanatic. As a five-year-old he remembers watching a soccer match on television with his sister. She liked the one team because they were in yellow (Arsenal’s away kit), he liked the team in red and that was Liverpool and he’s been crazy about them since.

Bull’s-eyes and birdies

Charl Schwartzel will partner close friend Louis Oosthuizen in the South African team in the World Cup of Golf at Omega Mission Hills in China from November 24-27, Masters champion Schwartzel, according to tournament rules, was

given the chance to select a teammate and he had no hesitation in asking Oosthuizen, the 2010 British Open champion.

South Africa have won the World Cup five times, most recently in 2003 when Trevor Immelman and Rory Sabbatini did duty for the golfing “Proteas”.

Ian Poulter will partner Justin Rose in the England team. Poulter had the chance to select an England team-mate after higher-ranked Luke Donald, Lee Westwood and Paul Casey all turned down the event.Poulter and Rose were partners in the 2008 Ryder Cup, winning two of their three games together, and at the 2007 World Cup, where they finished fourth.

Ireland look strong with the last two US Open champions, Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell in their line-up while Italy once again feature the Molinari brothers Francesco and Edoardo Molinari, who claimed the title for Italy two years ago. The United States will be

The Tempest Car Hire men’s interprovincial at Bloemfontein GC from September 19-23 promises to be a closely fought affair, especially since

defending champions Western Province have lost four players – including captain Aaron Russel – from their winning line-up of last year.

“I don’t necesarily see it as a negative, though,” insists team manager Henk Smith. “Last year we had a couple of 35-year-olds in the team. This year it’s a younger side and the oldest player is Werner Theart, the captain, who’s 30. And one of the newcomers is Dylan Raubenheimer who’s only 16.”

Russel, incidentally, is travelling with the TaylorMade support team on the European Tour, and while he will be missed Smith remains confident. “All the guys have been playing well, and I really believe we’ve got a chance of winning again.”

It’s not going to be a walk in the park, though, as the other A Section teams – Central Gauteng, KZN, Gauteng North, Southern Cape and Boland – all look pretty useful.

In terms of numbers Central is the biggest union in the country. But in the last few years biggest hasn’t always meant best, and WP were interprovincial champions in 2008, KZN in 2009 and, of course, WP again last year. So Central are smarting a bit, keen to put the

record straight and only victory can ensure that.Central have also lost four of their

players who did duty at Pretoria CC last year. However, in their favour is that Jock Wellington – South Africa’s No 1 senior – is managing the side, and he’s not a man who likes losing.

“Hopefully I can add some value,” he says. “There’s an art to matchplay, especially in the foursomes, and maybe I can help the guys in that direction. I also think the correct attitude is important. Too often in the past the Central players have been arrogant and it’s cost them.”

Wellington has the luxury of having four current SA amateur internationals in his side – Haydn Porteous, Ruan de Smidt, Daniel Hammond and captain Graham van der Merwe, while Soweto’s Muzi Nethunzwi is an exciting addition to the line-up.

Gauteng North were in the B Section last year but came out tops to gain promotion. And, quite frankly, 12 months down the line – with SA number one Brandon Stone at the top of the order – they look strong enough to now challenge for A Section honours.

And the same goes for KZN, who were runners-up last year and can look to SA strokeplay champion Jared Harvey to “bat” at number one for them.

Rookie Connie aims high in Europe

Connie Chen sets her sights high and making the cut in five out of eight events on the 2011 Ladies European Tour, finishing seventh

in the Finnair Masters, and qualifying for the Women’s British Open only gets a “not bad, expected more” from the 18-year-old rookie.

The former South African amateur number one is one of the youngest players on any of the major professional tours and, as of the beginning of this month (September) was lying 71st on LET’s Order of Merit with earnings of 17 074 euros which translates to about R175 000. Only the top 80 are fully exempt for next year so she’s inside the cutline although her goal is to be “closer to top 40” by the end of the year.

“My golf’s a work in progress right now and considering that I’ve recently having

changed coaches (she now works with Doug Wood at Serengeti) and made some swing adjustments, I guess still being able to play fairly well with the changes has been a positive.”

Talking of playing fairly well, that was certainly the case in the Finnair Masters where she finished seventh on six-under-par 207, five behind fellow rookie Caroline Hedwall from Sweden who won that week. And Connie was also six under, with a score of 210 this time, in the Swiss Open, where she tied for 21st place. So the signs are certainly encouraging for a very young player on tour for the first time.

She works hard in the gym because, as she says, golf has become a “game for athletes”. And in spite of a body weight of a fraction under 50kg she still manages to hit the ball along way.”Of course golf is not only about hitting the ball far,” she insists.

“It’s more about having the same swing on the 18th hole as you had on the first.”

For the most part, she’s enjoyed seeing a bit of the world although, as she puts it “having gone through Dubai in transit five or six times already this year you do get tired of airports.”

Fellow South Africans Lee-Anne Pace and Ashleigh Simon, who won the Portugal Open in June, were 13th and 20th respectively in the moneylist with 94 721 and 74 392 euros respectively at the beginning of September. Stacy Bregman was next best of the South Africans, 70th with 17 104 euros.

In the last three months of this year Chen is hoping to get into most of the eight events on the LET calendar, taking in tournaments in Austria, the Czech Republic, Spain, France, China, India and Dubai.

union ahead of the September 19-23 Tempest Car Hire men’s interprovincial at Bloemfonetin GC.“We had 50 two-man teams taking part including all the Gauteng North, North West, Ekurhuleni and Central players chosen for the ITP. So for Central to finish first, second and third is a really good sign,” said the union’s executive director Marinus Weiss.For the record Graham van der Merwe and Haydn Porteous finished first on three under par 141 (72-69), followed by Callum Mowat and Michael Dixon on 142 (67-75) with Ruan de Smidt and Danny Hammond third on 143 (72-71).“Foursomes is a tough format and three pairs under par on a dusty, windy day represented pretty good scoring,” said Weiss.

Haydn Porteous knew he was in the last chance saloon, but he just had to take that last shot at qualifying for the Glacier Junior Series Final.

So the 17-year-old Modderfontein golfer travelled all the way to Mossel Bay Golf Club, determined to come out on top at the Louis Oosthuizen-hosted tournament, the 29th of 30 stops on the 2011 schedule.

“When there is an all-expenses trip to the Orange Bowl Junior Invitational at stake, you just have to give yourself every chance to qualify,” he explained. “It’s like the Olympics of junior golf; it’s the ultimate tournament on the junior golf circuit, so I had to go for it.”

The country’s number two ranked men’s amateur did just what was required. He produced a well executed three-under-par 69 to beat Jovan Rebula and Heinrick Oosthuizen by six shots.

“At least now I’ve thrown my name in the hat for the final,” said the elated teenager.

“I’ll have a chance to challenge for the trip to Florida and I don’t intend to let it slip again this year.”

Porteous had the chance to win last year, but Jean Richie beat him to the grand prize. He admits that his own complacency at the national final tripped him up.

“I went into the final thinking that I only had to beat Brandon Stone to win,” he explained. “I was over-confident going into the tournament and when my putting let me down, I got very negative.

“Next thing I knew, there was Jean. He beat me by two shots, but I really lost the tournament myself.”

Porteous hopes the experience he gained over the last year will better equip him for this year’s final, to be held at Pecanwood from October 5-7.

Excluding the final, the last of the 30 events on the schedule is at Wanderers, on September 18.

Women’s Golf SA will increase its affiliated member unions to

13 in January 2012 with the inclusion of the new Ekurhuleni

Women’s Golf Union, which has split from Gauteng Ladies Golf.

The new union encompasses 15 clubs: Avion Park, Benoni CC, Benoni Lake, Ebotse, Engineers, ERPM, Heidelberg, Kempton Park,

Nigel, Pollak Park, Royal Oak, SAPS, Serengeti, Springs and State Mines.

The history of the new union is that East Rand Ladies Golf was originally formed in 1961, 50 years ago, but disbanded in 1998 to merge with Gauteng Ladies Golf. But with 600 to 700 lady members belonging to East Gauteng clubs, lady captains had met with their members early this year and were given a mandate to vote at a special meeting held to decide whether to form a new union.

At a meeting in March the delegates unanimously agreed that it was desirable to form their own union and WGSA have since given approval and it will officially come into being on January 1, 2012.

The incoming president is expected to be Daphne Maynier and the secretary Ursula Dinglestad.

The first Ekurhuleni Women’s Stroke Play Championship will be played on June 3 and 4 next year with the venue still to be decided. And in celebration of the new union, WGSA will host the first Sanlam A Match Play Championship at Benoni CC in July 2012. WGSA has announced that the Sanlam SA Amateur will be split into separate Stroke Play and Match Play events from 2012.

Y ou get regular golf fanatics, and then you get those who fall into what some might call the over-the-top category.

Californian Ken Norton is definitely one of the latter breed, as I discovered on www.golfweek.com.

Recently the 55-year-old played his 600th-plus round of golf in 365 days. He played every single day for a year – winter, spring, summer of fall (and maybe it felt like he was about to fall at times) – and most days it was 36 holes.

Not surprisingly, he has set a Guinness world record for the most rounds completed in a year.

Why did he do it?Well, it was part of a competition

sponsored by a San Diego golf company and his reward is five years of free golf plus a TaylorMade custom club fitting.

Norton, who says he was pretty choked up when he sunk his final putt, brought his handicap down from 25 to a handy six during the course of the year, and had 10 holes-in-one. He also dropped nearly 20kg in weight, stopped drinking and now feels as if he’s “in the shape of his life”.

According to the website, in his former life he was the owner of a construction company who almost worked himself to death, went through multiple marriages and lost $8,5-million in land in 2007 when the economy crashed.

“I was living at 100 mph, completely going 24/7.“Life was totally out of control,” he was quoted as saying on www.golfweek.com.

He has had five heart attacks and hardly slept. Now, through all that golf, he feels like a new man. He said he ended up having so much energy that after 36 holes of golf he’d jump on his Harley, and head for the beach to go surfing.

When your shot has to carry over a water hazard, you can either hit one more club or two more balls.

If you really want to get better at golf, go back and take it up at a much earlier age.

Since bad shots come in groups of three, a fourth bad shot is actually the beginning of the next group of three.

When you look up, causing an awful shot, you will always look down again at exactly the moment when you ought to start watching the ball if you ever want to see it again.

Every time a golfer makes a birdie, he must subsequently make two triple bogeys to restore the fundamental equilibrium of the universe.

If you want to hit a 7 iron as far as Tiger Woods does, simply try to lay up just short of a water hazard.

To calculate the speed of a player’s downswing, multiply the speed of his back-swing by his handicap; I.e., back-swing 20 mph, handicap 15, downswing = 300 mph.

There are two things you can learn by stopping your back-swing at the top and checking the position of your hands: how many hands you have, and which one is wearing the glove.

Hazards attract; fairways repel. Keep this in mind.

A ball you can see in the rough from 50 yards away is not yours.

If there is a ball on the fringe and a ball in the bunker, your ball is in the bunker. If both balls are in the bunker, yours is in the footprint.

It’s easier to get up at 6:00 AM to play golf than at 10:00 to mow the lawn.

A good drive on the 18th hole has stopped many a golfer from giving up the game.

Golf is the perfect thing to do on Sunday because you always end up having to pray a lot.

A good golf partner is one who’s always slightly worse than you are....that’s why I get so many calls to play with friends.

If there’s a storm rolling in, you’ll be having the game of your life.

Golf balls are like eggs. They’re white. They’re sold by the dozen. And you need to buy fresh ones each week.

It’s amazing how a golfer who never helps out around the house will replace his divots, repair his ball marks, and rake his sand traps.

If your opponent has trouble remembering whether he shot a six or a seven, he probably shot an eight (or worse).

It takes longer to learn to be a good golfer than it does to become a brain surgeon. On the other hand, you don’t get to ride around on a cart, drink beer, eat hot dogs and fart, if you are performing Brain Surgery !!!!

Sanlam Regional Finals – Central Gauteng

The annual Sanlam Region finals were held on Saturday, 28 August on the Rocklands Golf course at CCJ in Johannesburg North. A big thank you must to

the Club and it’s members to make this course available for this very worthy event.For the record, 112 players qualified from 35 Clubs across Central Gauteng by

participating in the various events which were held by the respective Clubs. Of great concern was the fact that 21 players either withdrew from the event or just did not bother to pitch up for this event which is a total lack of respect towards their Clubs and more so to the sponsors of the event, Sanlam.

For the record, the following players qualified to play at the National Finals which will be held in October at Sun City:
