Course Selection/Enrollment E-MAIL ACCOUNT POLICY All students in full- and part-time undergraduate degree programs (as well as Diploma in Arts students), are required to activate and maintain a Ryerson University [email protected] Matrix e-mail account, which shall be an official means by which they will receive University communications. Procedures for student activation and use, as well as the Ryerson Student Computing Guidelines, are available on the Ryerson University Computing and Communication Services web site: www.ccs.ryerson.ca/students. Under the section ‘Services’, select e-mail. NEWLY-APPROVED PROGRAM STUDENTS New students will be provided with detailed course enrollment information outlining the procedures they must follow. General information on course enrollment may be obtained from the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Newly-approved students who have paid their tuition fees, will access their timetables during the specified time during Orientation Week. Students who do not do so cannot be guaranteed space in their program unless special written permission has been given. Students are academically and financially responsible for all courses and charges that accrue as a result of the Course Selection, or Open Enrollment period, unless the Registration and Records Office is notified in writing. Non-attendance/non-payment is not acceptable for the removal of courses and fee charges.

For online help on how to perform you course selections, please visit www.ryerson.ca/service or email [email protected] GENERAL COURSE ENROLLMENT INFORMATION 1. Students are responsible for ensuring that the course(s) in which they enroll in, is correct and

appropriate to their degree plan and will meet the requirements for graduation. Students must remember that they are financially and academically responsible for each course they enroll in.

2. Students should not enroll in a course, without prior permission via the Course Substitution process,

that is not a required or elective course in their program’s curriculum (see #11) 3. Prior to enrolling in a course, a student must verify the relevance of the course to their curriculum

requirements. For instance, some Sociology courses are classified in the Calendar as Professionally-Related and some are classified as Liberal Studies. Students must ensure they are enrolling in the correct classification of a course. This can be verified in RAMSS.

4. Courses within a program are grouped into semesters. 5. Course offerings may vary from term to term. All courses listed within a table under a particular

program, may not necessarily be offered in all terms. 6. Some course enrollment adjustments must be authorized by the student’s program department, and

all must be initiated by the dates listed in this Calendar. Students are permitted to make changes to their course enrollment during the specified course selection period each term.

7. Course/Section Confirmation: Students have full access to Ryerson's Administrative Management

Self Service (RAMSS) to verify their courses and sections in which they are enrolled. Students are required to verify this information by the end of the first month of the term. Students are required to make any necessary corrections with their program department within two weeks. A $100 (subject to change) Addition to Enrollment Record fee will be levied for each course or grade added to a student’s enrollment after the following dates: Fall term - November 4th, Winter term - March 3rd. Students are academically and financially responsible for all courses selected, unless they make corrections by the designated deadline.

Page 14: Ted Rogers School of Business Management - Ryerson ... · Ted Rogers School of Business Management ... Vinnie’s Pizza & Pasta, The Kitchen Table, McDonald’s, Alice Gordon ...

15 Student Guide 2007-2008

8. Students wishing to drop courses without academic penalty should consult the “Significant Dates” section of this Calendar for deadline dates.

9. Courses Not Counted/Course Replacement: Students are required to advise the Registration and

Records Office at the time of enrollment, of courses which are being substituted for previously failed courses, or of courses which are not in their curriculum.

10. Students will obtain final grades at the end of term only for those courses in which they are officially

enrolled. The onus is on the students to ensure that they are officially enrolled in courses being taken. A $15 (subject to change) search fee per course will be charged if students have not enrolled properly but have attended classes. There is no guarantee that grades will be found by this search.

11. Program Change/Course Directive/Curriculum Substitution: Students are required to complete the

curriculum for their program as set out in this Calendar. It is the responsibility of each student to obtain a new Calendar, each year, and follow their curriculum as stated. Any requests for curriculum/course directive/course substitutions or other modifications to program requirements must be approved by the Chair/Director of both the appropriate program and teaching departments. Course Directive/Curriculum Substitution forms are available from the Academic Advising Office and at www.ryerson.ca/forms. Failure to obtain written permission on the appropriate form and within the established deadline will result in ineligibility to graduate.

12. No course can be repeated more than twice (three completions in total when the original attempt is

included). If at least one of the course attempts results in a passing grade, the course will count towards graduation requirements irrespective of the sequence of grades earned. A student will receive a Suspended Academic Standing after three failures in the same course. Equivalent courses taken elsewhere under Letter of Permission and where a ‘Failed’ grade has been received will also be included in the three failure count.

Ted Rogers School of Business Management 1. Full-time students are limited to a maximum of seven credit courses per semester, including

continuing education courses. For further information, please consult the Student Affairs Office.

16 Student Guide 2007-2008

Fall 2007 First Year Students University Orientation & Enrollment Congratulations on becoming a member of the Ryerson Family!

Whether you come to Ryerson from high school, college/university or from the work force, you are about to face a major life transition to academia. “Transition” is different from change. A change is external and visible; a transition is internal and less visible, the process you go through mentally when you face a big life change. Transitions have stages that people travel through at varying speeds. First there is an ending (high school graduation, leaving your job, etc.). For some students, this stage is followed by a period of reflection and examination of personal goals. It can be a frustrating time, but it is also a time for growth and creative breakthroughs. It is the beginning of a new sense of confidence. Take your time through this transitional period. Do not rush to get to the new beginning, as you may end up making false starts. Do not be surprised by delayed reactions or over-reactions, they are all ‘par for the course’. Use the support systems the University offers. Get involved in your new school, make a connection to your campus community – join a club, volunteer or work on campus, write for the student newspaper, etc. Skills for success cannot be learned in the classroom alone. As First Year Students you have received a Orientation and Enrollment Brochure in the mail contained the following must read correspondence: (Complete Brochure is also available online at: http://www.ryerson.ca/orientation

Orientation and Enrollment

University Orientation: It is strongly recommended that you attend the Orientation activities. You can choose to attend one, two, or all three days. Note: Make sure that you attend your academic session that will be scheduled on one of the three days of Orientation. Your Faculty/School schedule is found in the back of the brochure.

Enrollment and Important Information:

Establishment of Student Email Accounts – It is essential that you, as a Ryerson student, activate and maintain a Ryerson University central Matrix e-mail account. You require an activated Matrix account to be able to access RAMSS (Ryerson’s Administrative Management Self Service website). Important academic information will only be communicated to you by the University in this manner. Activate your e-mail account as soon as possible on or after August 13th by following the instructions provided online at www.ryerson.ca/accounts. Enrollment Verification – Very Important!- It is your responsibility to ensure that your academic record is always correct and complete. Final Examination Responsibilities – You must check the Significant Dates that are located near the front of the Undergraduate calendar, on the Ryerson website and located in this guide. You are reminded that final examinations may be scheduled on any day during the examination period (including Saturdays and Sundays) and that students should avoid making travel or employment arrangements before the end of this period.

Undergraduate Dean’s List What is the Dean's List, and how do I get my name on it? In June of each academic year, students who met standards of specific academic criteria as set down by the individual Faculties will receive a Letter of Congratulations from the Dean of their Faculty. General criteria are noted below: standards may vary from one Faculty to another. The Dean's List recognition is noted only on a student's transcript, not on a graduation document. 1. Each Faculty will establish an annual Dean's List for students enrolled in undergraduate programs in that Faculty. 2. To be eligible for consideration for the Dean's List, students in full-time programs must be carrying an average unit load of at least 4.01 units over the two terms. 3. To be eligible for consideration for the Dean's List, students in part-time programs must have completed a specified number of courses deemed by the Dean to be the equivalent of a full year of study in the program in which the student is enrolled. 4. Each Dean will establish a GPA requirement for their Faculty. While this GPA must be a minimum of 3.5 GPA for the academic year (Fall and Winter terms), a Dean may establish a GPA requirement that is higher than 3.5. 5. Students must have all passing grades and a CLEAR Academic Standing for both terms. They cannot have received any Disciplinary Notices (DN) while at Ryerson. 6. Each Dean may establish additional criteria beyond the minimum. 7. All criteria for Dean's List must be published on the Faculty’s website.

23 Student Guide 2007-2008

STUDENT GUIDE TO AVOIDING ACADEMIC APPEALS Students sometimes find themselves in circumstances which affect their academic performance. Students sometimes believe that they should continue to the end of the semester, see how they do, and then appeal their grade or academic standing if they do not succeed. Basic Principles:

• You should be aware that failure to deal with unforeseen circumstance when they arise will jeopardize your ability to appeal a grade or academic standing. You must consult with your professors, or with your Chair/Director, on accommodations and considerations as soon as they are needed.

• Students sometimes claim that they are “too shy” to discuss their personal situation with their instructors in order to ask for considerations.

o You should be aware that you do not have to discuss the details of your situation, but you do need to inform instructors that you have a problem. If you wish, you may discuss your situation with your Chair/Director (or other student affairs person in your school or department) so that you do not have to discuss it with each professor individually.

o You should also be aware that if you do not bring the situation to the attention of your professors, and you decide to appeal, you will have to tell your circumstances to many people, and put them in writing.

• Grades are a measure of your knowledge. Ryerson is committed to giving students a fair opportunity to learn, but ultimately, if you do not have the knowledge you do not qualify for a Ryerson degree. Grades will not be increased because you want them to be – you must be able to demonstrate that you have the knowledge that everyone else with that grade (or academic standing) has. Grades are not given – they are earned.

Responsibilities: Religious Obligations: If there is a test, exam or assignment due date that

conflicts with a religious obligation, you must notify your instructor within the first 2 weeks of class (or for a final exam, within 5 days of the posting of the schedule). You should use the form available at www.ryerson.ca/undergraduate/currentstudents/rr/observemain.htm. The policy is found at www.ryerson.ca/acadcouncil/current/pol150.pdf .

Accommodation for Disability – If you require an accommodation for a disability should contact the Access Centre. Any accommodation must be presented to the professor as soon as possible, and may not be presented after-the-fact. The professor may wish to discuss accommodations with you and the Access Centre to ensure that they are appropriate.

Re-grading or Recalculation: Requests for the re-grading or recalculation of your work must be made within 10 working days of the date the graded work is returned to the class. It is your responsibility to discuss your work with your professor, and he or she may ask you to put your request in writing detailing where you believe the grading is incorrect.

o If your professor does not re-grade your work, or if you still believe that there is merit to your concern, you may request a formal re-grading from your Chair/Director. You must submit a detailed

Page 23: Ted Rogers School of Business Management - Ryerson ... · Ted Rogers School of Business Management ... Vinnie’s Pizza & Pasta, The Kitchen Table, McDonald’s, Alice Gordon ...

24 Student Guide 2007-2008

outline of where you believe the grading is incorrect. Be aware that your grade could go down (or up or remain the same). The result of the re-grading is the grade that is recorded.

Medical or Compassionate: Documents for the missing of a test, exam or assignment due date must be submitted within 3 working days. This should normally be done on a Ryerson Medical Certificate, but if you get a note from a physician it must contain all of the information required on the form, and you must submit the affidavit (the top part of the form) with the note. Your certificate must be for the period of time in question. Your Department/School has the right to verify the validity of the certificate. You are responsible for notifying the instructor, as soon as possible, if you will be missing a test or exam

Consideration in more than one course: If you have an illness or other situation, which affects your overall academic performance, you must consult with your Chair/ Director who will make recommendations on a plan for your studies and will inform your instructors. (You must still contact your instructors to verify the details.)

Academic Appeals – The policy and forms can be found at www.ryerson.ca/acadcouncil.

Student Guide to Avoiding Academic Misconduct Basic Principles: Intellectual freedom and honesty are essential to the sharing and development of knowledge. All members of the Ryerson community must exhibit integrity in their teaching, learning, research, evaluation, and personal behaviour. As a Ryerson student, you are responsible for familiarizing yourself with the Student Code of Academic Conduct which can be found at www.ryerson.ca/acadcouncil/current/pol60.pdf Ryerson has developed an academic integrity website for students, contains valuable information along with tutorials and quizzes to help you learn about various types of misconduct, how to avoid misconduct and resources available to assist you. See www.ryerson.ca/academicintegrity. Ryerson has established an Academic Integrity Office. If you have any questions about academic integrity, are concerned with the academic integrity of a particular situation, or would like to consult about a charge of academic misconduct, either e-mail [email protected] or call 416-979-5000 ext. 7800. Academic misconduct is defined as: • Plagiarism • Cheating • Misrepresentation of personal identity or performance • Submission of false information • Damaging or Tampering with the Scholarly Environment • Contributing to Academic Misconduct • Unauthorized Copying or Use of Copyrighted Materials • Violations of Departmental Policies on Professional Behaviour

25 Student Guide 2007-2008

Penalties and consequences for academic misconduct: • The minimum penalty for academic misconduct on any assignment or other

form of evaluation is a mark of zero for the work, and a Disciplinary Notice (DN) will be placed on your record.

• A grade of “F” in a course may be assigned by the instructor. • You may be required to participate in the Academic Integrity Tutorial in

conjunction with another penalty. • Disciplinary Suspension (DS) may be recommended by instructor, or may be

assigned by the Faculty Appeals Committee or Academic Council Appeals Committee.

• Disciplinary Withdrawn (DW) may be recommended by instructor, or may be assigned by the Faculty Appeals Committee or Academic Council Appeals Committee.

• The Academic Council Appeals Committee may expel you from the University.

• In some circumstances your degree, diploma or certificate may be rescinded. • You may be required to replace damaged or destroyed material. STUDENT RIGHTS Learning Environment At Ryerson the learning environment of students is a priority, as outlined in policies and collective agreements. The primary concern of the faculty is the students. Faculty commits to maintaining punctuality in their teaching schedule or course of study, while also having each session planned and prepared for the students. In addition, faculty also make themselves available for student inquiries by the posting and observance of reasonable office hours. These efforts are applied in order to create a learning environment, which allows for intellectual curiosity to be stimulated as well as to foster a desire and enthusiasm for learning.

Student Rights and Responsibilities Academic Council approved the following Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities April 1, 2003. This list is by no means a complete list of those rights and responsibilities, and does not include, for example, the normally expected academic obligations students and faculty have with regard to coursework. If a special arrangement has been made regarding ownership, then the department/school also has a specific policy that must have been approved by the Academic Council. Students may be asked to sign a release form, which will allow their work to be retained by the department/school. All assignments handed in, as long as submitted on time, should be returned by the end of the term, unless other arrangements have been made. EXCEPTION: Final exams are not returned. However the professor retains them for a full year. You do have the right to see your final exam if you are considering an appeal or for your own learning purposes.

43 Student Guide 2007-2008

Ryerson Student Guide Introduction

If you read any administrative information this year, plan to read the first two pages of this Guide! The introduction will provide you with a good idea of how (and why) to use the Guide effectively. Ryerson will assume that you are familiar with the policies, procedures, and deadlines outlined in the Guide. The tip boxes located throughout the Guide should prove particularly useful. The Guide is free, but ignoring it could be costly!

How does the Guide work?

The guide is divided into sections which outline the various types of business you may need to conduct at different times of the year. For example, there are sections on how to add and drop courses, graduation requirements, examinations, fees, and so on. You probably won't want (or need) to read the guide from cover to cover. What you should plan to do is consult the relevant section of the guide when you have questions or when it is time to carry out various pieces of administrative business.

Some features you may find particularly helpful include:

A glossary that defines terms you may not be familiar with.Tips to provide helpful hints about procedures.A Resource Directory to point you in the right direction for answers to your questions. An index at the back to make it easier for you to find the information you need (and so you don't have to read the whole guide to get an answer to one specific question).

55 Student Guide 2007-2008

Study Tips Study in the Same Place: Find a quiet place, away form distractions, with ample

room to work. Once you’ve found it, study in the same place every time.

Study at the Same Time: Figure out what time of day you can concentrate best, and what works into you schedule. Use that time every day to study.

Use a Supply Box: Keep all your homework supplies in one place, ready to be

used. Keep them organized, and you won’t need to waste your time searching for supplies.

Cut Out All Distractions: Concentrate on your assignments and nothing else.

The TV should be off, other people’s conversations should be in another room, music should be turned down, and phone calls should be taken after you’ve finished studying.

Do the Hard Stuff First: If you are dreading a particular assignment, or know it

requires a lot of extra work or effort, do it first. Your brain will be fresh.

Schedule Long Term Projects: Larger projects need to be broken into smaller components to make them manageable. For example, these components could be such things as gathering notes, writing a rough draft, making corrections or additions, writing a bibliography, and completing the final copy. Set yourself a deadline for completing each component and make sure you stick to it.

Review Regularly: A regular review of your notes should be a part of your

homework plan. This takes just a few minutes each day, but will pay off considerably when it comes to test time.

Schedule Each Study Session: When you sit down to study or work on your

assignments, make up a quick schedule as to how you are going to use your time. Break it up into blocks of time that you will spend on each task.

Avoid Doing a Marathon: If you’ve followed the previous tips, this last one

should never happen. However, you need to know that marathon study sessions are the least productive way to study.

Classroom Productivity & Efficiency Note Taking Getting the Most of Going to Class

1. Watch your friends and neighbours. Don’t be distracted during class – socialize before or afterward.

2. Don’t rely on your memory to keep track of due dates, assignment requirements, etc. Many students keep their pens, pencils and note paper in their back packs, requiring a fair amount of time and effort to retrieve them before recording something important. Rather than forcing their friends to wait while they bring the note taking out and then replace tem, they try to remember the note – fat chance!

3. As soon as you enter class, access your pen and paper to avoid #2 above.
