“The challenge is not to bring technology into the classroom. The millennials, with their Facebook and their cell phones, have done that. The challenge is to capture the power of technology to improve learning for all.”

David Wiley, Brigham Young University

Going Mobile

Technology Week 2010

Mobile is another Revolutionary Change We need to stay ahead of the curve so that when

business units are ready we can leverage the technology to do university business

Our job is to put infrastructure in place for the business units to useo PAWS — we were able to respond effectively to the university’s online

business requirements (pay stubs, tax slips, student statements …) because the infrastructure was in place for online service delivery

Page 18: Technology Week 2010. ANNUAL ICT UPDATE 2010 EDITION Rick Bunt Chief Information Officer and Associate Vice-president Information & Communications Technology.

Technology Week 2010

Mobile is the next profound change

Mobile devices are becoming ubiquitous

Mobile service is differento Mobile is “on demand”o Time is of the essence for mobile

Technology Week 2010

Why we need a mobile strategy Our students and faculty are already using these

devices for service from vendors Other universities (MIT, Harvard, Berkeley, etc.) are

embracing mobility o It’s becoming expected by students and faculty

We need a common service frameworko Provide infrastructure so units don’t have to figure

it out on their own

Technology Week 2010

Our Next Steps Develop framework for mobile service delivery:o Strategy, architecture, governance More research: o Demand, platforms, services, etc. Moving forward:o Third Integrated Plan 2012-1016
