Technology Enhanced Primary Science Set

I. INTRODUCTION What is sound? How to keep my tea warm? Can I measure light? Primary school pupils are curious about their surroundings and have many science questions. Can technology help in teaching and learning science at Primary School?

The core of science is about investigating, exploring, asking questions, analyzing, and thinking – activities that technology can uniquely facilitate and deepen. The educational research studies showed that technology can work positively already at the primary school level. Based on our experience with the use of ICT we have developed the Primary Science with €Sense set. With the €Sense interface and its sensors, and the Coach software students can carry many different science investigations. ‘Real-time’ display of the “measured data” on the computer screen allows students to make direct links between the phenomenon and the graph. Such immediate feedback encourages critical thinking skills; students have time to spend on observing and interpreting, discussing and analyzing data. Students can quickly repeat the experiments, change experimental conditions and explore the results of the changes. This facilitates an interactive approach to the experiment. “Let’s see what happens if … “.By using our materials pupils learn not only basic science concepts but also develop mathematical skills in reading and interpreting graphs and language skills in using science terminology. The materials can be integrated into any science curricula or can be used on their own.

II. OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the Primary Science Set are:

1. To help teachers to develop skills related to inquiry-based approach to science education.

2. To help teachers to introduce use of sensors into their science lesson.

3. To encourage and assist the use of technology by teachers and students.

4. To learn students basic science concepts around sound, light, heat and temperature.

5. To develop students’ mathematical skills in reading and interpreting graphs.

6. To develop students’ language skill by defining new science terminology.

7. To develop student’s basic abilities to do and understand scientific inquiry such as: - Asking and answering questions - Planning and conducting simple investigations - Predicting outcomes- Making observations - Testing hypothesis - Employing tools to gather data - Reading and interpreting graphs - Analysing data - Making comparisons- Using data to construct explanations and conclusions- Communicating investigations and explanation.

8. To promote inquiry classroom in which the student is the centre of the learning process. The following students behaviours characterize inquiry: - Students are working as scientists. - Students are taking responsibility for their own learning. - Students are working in cooperative groups.- Students are making decisions.- Students communicate their findings.- Students are showing interest in science.

4. Teacher Support

Get Started Guide describes how to work with the €Sense interface and the Coach 6 Lite software. The Teacher Guide provides: science background information advice on teaching approaches potential learning benefits possible student difficulties list of materials needed outlines of the activities exemplary data and

answers.

5. Student Activities

The offered in the Primary Science Set student activities have inquiry-based character. In such activities student is the center of the learning process, work like a researcher, design and conduct own investigations. Teacher becomes a guide and a facilitator of this process. The materials consist of 3 parts, built around the use of the €Sense light, temperature and sound sensors. Each part consists of a set of units. Each unit can take 1-3 lesson hours. For each unit a student worksheet and a respective Coach software activity is provided. A student worksheet offers space for students’ observations, predictions, data, conclusions, etc. The worksheets (word documents) can be freely modified and printed for use in the classroom.
