What is TEKS?
Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills describes what
knowledge students should have and what skills are needed to use technology.
GradesFour Grade Clusters
K-2--Input information, beginning touch keyboard, basic computer.
3-5--Correct keyboarding technique, search engines.
6-8--Multi-software packages
9-12--Computer science, publishing, digital, multimedia, video, web, etc.
Educator Requirements
Tech App EC-12 Certificate Pre-kindergarten, kindergarten,
1-12th grades except Computer Science.
Tech App 8-12 8th grade tech app curriculum 9-12th desktop publishing, digital
graphics/animation, multimedia, video technology, web mastering, and independent study

Computer Science I & IIElementary Teachers
May integrate TEKS into their classes if the school district approves it.
Secondary Teachers Same as elementary teachers plus separate
classes if approved by school district.New Teachers
All new teachers must have tech app certificates for their particular grade level.
Who Can Be Certified?
Person has to hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
Complete teacher training College/university, school district, regional center or
community college.
Pass certification test for subject area and grade level.
