Sample Design Report Table of Contents
Purpose
This document consolidates the major elements that comprise a typical Schematic Design and
Design Development report. The Schematic Design report summarizes and synthesizes background
information and client requirements into architectural design options, and proposes a recommended
design solution based on an analysis of the pros and cons of each. During Design Development,
architectural, engineering, and specialist consultants apply their skills to refine the design concept so
that it can progress to the Construction Documents phase.
While the sample described below is intended for a school project, it can be adapted to suit any other
building typology. Following the Sample Table of Contents, a list of Design Development Drawing
Expectations is provided. This document presents the information typically expected in the Design
Development drawing submission (although it cannot capture every element of every project).
The Sample Table of Contents and Design Development Drawing Expectations are offered as a
reference for the information of Project Managers, Design Teams, and other stakeholders, and do not
replace the requirements or obligations in the Owner’s Consultant Agreement, documents such as
the Canadian Handbook of Practice for Architects, or those found elsewhere in the Technical Design
Requirements for Alberta Infrastructure Projects (TDR).
