Helpful hints before you begin!

• The lead NET member ensemble and project partners are considered joint applicants and should both have direct input when putting together the project plan and budget. Consider how you will both participate in writing/contribution to the narrative.

• We suggest drafting your responses in a Word document so that you can easily cut and paste them into the application. Note: Please be aware of the word counts!

NOTE: Text copied into the application will not retain formatting and character counts vary program. You are strongly advised to plan additional time during your application process to re-format your text within the online application.

• If more than one partner will be working on the online application, you will need to share your log-in information.

Page 16: Technical Information Session Friday, December 16 – 11am PT ...

Helpful Hints (con’t)

• Write in a simple and straightforward manner. Avoid overly complicated and flowery language. Keep your application in the present tense.

• Think about the elements of the projects that will be funded with NET/TEN funds. This often helps you know what to focus on in the narrative. We’re most interested in the costs related to the relationships (fees, travel, time, space, etc.)

Page 17: Technical Information Session Friday, December 16 – 11am PT ...

Selection CriteriaGrants are awarded based on the quality of the relationship building and the depth of knowledge sharing.

Through this lens, a peer panel will select grantees based on:

• Clear articulation of the intended mutual benefits, learning goals, and anticipated outcomes with criteria for success

• Evidence that the activities will build on and deepen existing relationships through shared activity and peer-to-peer learning

• Potential for grant funds to increase organizational financial stability

Page 18: Technical Information Session Friday, December 16 – 11am PT ...

Selection Criteria (con’t)

• Project feasibility, i.e. scope, schedule, budget (including demonstrated consideration of how artists’ time and contributions will be recognized/compensated)

• Potential to share learning with other artists, ensembles, and/or the field

• Reflection of NET’s values of equity and inclusion by supporting a diverse range of grantees, projects, and activities (see Equity in Funding Statement)

All selection criteria receive equal weight during the review process.

Page 19: Technical Information Session Friday, December 16 – 11am PT ...

Example Activities:

• Presenting a shared work for the first time or co-developing a new work

• Co- developing a new work

• Knowledge of skill sharing (i.e. one partner shares a performance technique or methodology and the other shares expertise on a particular administrative challenge)

• Planning or community building for a future tour

• Exploring new presenting/touring models

Page 20: Technical Information Session Friday, December 16 – 11am PT ...

Example Activities:

• Joining forces to present a festival or community event

• Conversations to discuss leadership structure and/or another administrative challenge related to operation or management

• Exploring a particular technical element of an upcoming project

Further Reading:

• Check out the “Past Recipients” section on the website to read about previously funded projects.

Page 21: Technical Information Session Friday, December 16 – 11am PT ...

Exchange Grants must be reciprocal!

• Each partner should have the opportunity to learn from the other, either within the grant period, or as part of a larger project or timeframe.

• What do you want to learn? What do you want to teach? This program is about mutuality and shared learning.

• Reciprocation need not occur in the same way (i.e. one partner may share a performance and the other may reciprocate by sharing administrative practices.)

• Multiple partners are welcome, but we’re looking for clearly defined relationships. Don’t over complicate it by listing 5 partners.

• If you have multiple artists involved, you may want to give some thought to which relationship you are needing the funds to help develop.

Exchange Grants - NarrativeEquity/Diversity/Inclusion

How does your work, your ensemble/organization (if applicable), and/or your proposed activities reflect NET’s values of equity, diversity, and inclusion? Please read NET’s Equity in Funding Statement to inform your response.

Helpful Hints!

• This is a newly added section that aligns with NET’s core values.

• We think about diversity in a broad sense. Think what may distinguish you within the NET membership.

• We’re looking for BOTH how the lead applicant embodies these values andhow the work with your partners and the project itself shows a commitment to equity/diversity/inclusion.

Page 36: Technical Information Session Friday, December 16 – 11am PT ...

Equity in Funding StatementAs an organization that champions ensemble practice and collaborative creation, NET advocates for access, inclusion, and the empowered agency of multiple voices. NET’s commitment to equity and justice is rooted in a holistic vision of cultural pluralism that values diversity of place, race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexuality, physical/mental/sensory dis/ability, class, national origin, religion, language, cultural heritage, age of individuals and ensembles, organizational size and structure, artistic form, and aesthetic orientation.

Diversity of grantees and their supported projects and activities is one of the NET/TEN program’s goals. To achieve this goal and support the equitable review of submitted applications, NET strives to select peer panels that reflect the widest diversity possible. Panels review applications and make funding recommendations independently to the NET staff in accordance with the program’s selection criteria and goals; all selection criteria (including the diversity of grantees and supported projects/activities) receive equal weight during the review process.

• Have someone who is not familiar with the project take a look. Does it make sense to someone outside of your organization?

• Have you written passionately? Have you explained why you are excited or why this project needs to happen now, or why these people need to be in a room together?

• Have you addressed all of the selection criteria points?

• Pat yourself on the back!

Quotes from past grantees!

"This exchange is precisely the genuine thing that we always hope for and too often pretend is happening.”

"This grant presented a singular opportunity for a true, intimate exchange about complex, intricate, and even difficult artistic subjects that require a certain quality of time and space to explore. ”

"We’d always hoped to engage more artists but never had the confidence to raise enough money or to hire artists willing to spend weeks away from home in order to make one show in several cities."

Page 52: Technical Information Session Friday, December 16 – 11am PT ...

Quotes (con’t)"We leveraged this grant into additional funding for the rest of the project, which equaled over $30,000 in added support, through a mix of individual donations, state arts councils, and private foundation support.“

"In addition to the concrete things we’ve learned—budgeting, fundraising, management—the psychological difference and morale-building that have resulted from this partnership have been amazing."

"We now have a familial intimacy of each other's specific goals, strengths, and weaknesses. We can vigorously advocate for the distinct opportunities we are each pursuing.”
