ROOFING SYSTEMS

ARCHITECT/ENGINEER/ ERECTOR INFORMATION

1. Weather Guard is a snap-together, 12” wide integral batten roof system. The minimum recommended slope is 3:12. Weather Guard is a UL 90 rated roofing panel that requires a solid substructure for support.

2. Weather Guard is a water shedding roof system and therefore must be installed on a minimum 3:12 roof slope. The panels must be installed over a completely waterproofed substructure If the waterproof membrane is mechanically attached with metal fasteners of any type, fasteners should be covered to protect the back side of the roof panels. Any mechanical attachment device that does not lay flat on the deck will telegraph through the panels.

3. Use a properly aligned and uniform substructure to avoid panel distortion. Typical substructures - plywood (5⁄8” minimum), light weight concrete, metal decking or OSB. All substructures must be properly engineered to meet specified design loads. For illustration purposes, details are show over plywood decking. For other substructures, please inquire.

4. Roofs may be erected from either direction. For panel lengths over 40’, please inquire.

5. Heavier gauges and striations minimize oil canning. Oil canning is not a cause for rejection.

6. The substructure (eave to ridge) must be on plane with a tolerance of ¼” in 20’ and ³⁄8” in 40’.

7. For proper fastener application, see Page WG-8 and WG-9.

8. All drawings and trim dimensions in this manual are based on a 1¼” wall thickness (Super Span Panel) and a 3:12 roof slope. Other wall panel thicknesses and roof slopes may affect various dimensions on drawings and trim. If you have any questions, call Whirlwind.

9. The information in this manual is believed to be correct and accurate. It should not be used for any specific application without being reviewed by a registered professional engineer. All metal roofs should be designed by a registered, professional engineer for loads specified by the governing code, including the higher pressures encountered at the edge zones of the roof.

10. Avoid restricting the thermal expansion and contraction of the Weather Guard panels. (ie: Do not attach panels to the substructure at both the eave and ridge.)

11. Weather Guard panels are not designed to be work platforms. Avoid any unnecessary foot traffic on Weather Guard panels. If foot traffic is required, protect the roof panels by using some type of roof pad, temporary deck, or walkway.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Before beginning installation of panels, the installer should examine the substrate or framing to ensure that all supporting members are straight, level, and plumb to avoid any panel distortion. All substructures should be designed to meet all necessary code requirements.

The installer should thoroughly familiarize himself with all installation instructions before starting work.

This manual contains suggestions and guidelines on how to install Weather Guard panels. The installation details shown are proven methods of construction, but are not intended to cover all instances, building requirements, designs or codes. It is the responsibility of the designer/installer to ensure that the details meet particular building requirements.

The panels should be installed plumb, straight, and accurately to the adjacent work. Some field cutting and fitting of panels and trim is to expected by the installer and minor field corrections are a part of normal installation work.

Installation procedures and penetrations by fasteners in the panel system shall be in accordance with the panel manufacturer’s printed instructions, details or the approved shop drawings. Trim shall be installed true, and in proper alignment, with any exposed fasteners equally spaced for the best appearance.

Oil canning in the flat area of the panels is common to the industry and shall not be a cause for panel rejection.

GENERAL INFORMATION

ROOF PREPARATION

Weather Guard is an excellent choice for residential or light commercial applications. Please read the following before installing Weather Guard.

ON NEW CONSTRUCTION:

• Weather Guard is designed to be installed over solid decking• Make sure the roof is clear of any debris that might interfere with installation.• Whirlwind recommends that the installer uses no less than 30 lb. felt underlayment and ice & water shield in all

valley conditions.• Installer needs to utilize “chalk” line where the first panel is installed.• Whirlwind recommends that this line be vertical, 1” from the rake edge of the roof deck and square with eave.

Other methods of confirming the modularity (or squareness) can also be used.

ON EXISTING ROOF:

• Weather Guard is designed to be installed over solid decking.• Make sure any existing decking is smooth, level and in good condition. Replace any decking not meeting these

requirements.• If there is an existing asphalt shingle roof, check local building codes to determine whether existing shingles

must be removed.• If installed over existing shingles, Whirlwind recommends the use of horizontal “furring” strips and foam

insulation placed between furring strips. This will insure a solid and level substrate to attach panels.• Make sure the roof is clear of any debris that might interfere with installation.• Whirlwind recommends that the installer uses no less than a 30 lb. felt underlayment.

FASTENER SPACING:

• Maximum Recommended Fastener Spacing for 12” wide 26 GA panels is 10 3⁄8”.

GENERAL INFORMATION

PANEL INSTALLATION TO BEGIN:

*Note: Before installation, select the type of eave details that suites the design requirements. If you choose the smooth configuration or hemmed edge detail, the panels should be field cut prior to being installed on the roof.

1. Snap a chalk line 1” from the rake edge of the roof.2. Align the female edge of the first panel with the chalk line. Panel should overhang eave as required by the selected

eave detail.3. Check panel alignment. If panel is properly aligned, attach rake edge to roof with a #10 x 1” Hi-Low woodscrew at

48” centers.

4. Attach the extended nail strip leg of the first panel to the plywood substrate with #10 x 1” pancake head fasteners at 103⁄8” centers (alternate slots).

GENERAL INFORMATION

5. Align the second panel female edge with the starter panel male edge. Panels must be flush at eave edge then lightly compress and snap panels together at seam. Snap panels from eave to ridge.

6. After panel seam is locked, fasten the panel with a #10 x 1” Type A Pancake Head - Wood Screw along the male leg at 103⁄8” on center or every other slot.

7. Continue to apply panels as shown in the previous steps.

8. Panels at the eave can be terminated in two ways. Each will depends on aesthetic considerations determined by the building owner or architect.

a. Panels can be fastened along the eave with a #10-11 Cupped Truss head wood grip with washer. Fasten along a line parallel to the eave edge 3” up from the eave edge. The fasteners are spaced at 6” centers.

b. Panels can be field hemmed at the eave by using the hemming tool. Typical hemming procedure is as follows:
