The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) estimates that exposure to smoke from the simplect of cooking constitutes the fourth worst risk factor for disease in developing

countries and causes almost four million premature deaths per year. Worldwide, theillnesses caused by smoke lead to serious problems for the health and livelihoods of thefamilies concerned, hampering their ability to escape grinding poverty. Exposure tothese toxic fumes is greatest among women and young children. Penetrating deep intothe lungs of its victims, this smoke aggravates a range of potentially fatal conditionssuch as pneumonia, lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart diseaseand low birth-weights in children. Frequent exposure to cook stove smoke can alsocause disabling health impacts like cataracts, which affect women more than men, and

Street foodvendors use twigs, cow dung, leafy biomass and briquettes. Fuel wood traders sellwood in bundles (50-60 kg) costing around 250-400 Bangladeshi Taka.
