Student Prerequisites:

What skills and technology experience will students need to

It is not necessary for students to have previous exposure with the technology of QR Codes. Typing and writing skills (including editing and revision skills) are beneficial in the writing of the text used in the QR Code creation.

be successful in this lesson or project?

Students will need experience in identifying crucial information and summary writing in order to produce concise pieces of writing to include in their QR Code (160 characters for text). Texts and URLs can be included in a QR Code. Text features can be found under the «More» dropdown option.

Lesson or Unit Starter:

What will you do to introduce the lesson or project?

Teacher models notetaking process using the weekly selection story. Demonstrate how to identify the most important information to include in the analysis including background on the main character, the setting, the plot (without giving too much away to interest others to read the story), the genre characteristics, and any additional or interesting information or insights about the story. Students can reflect on this modeled activity when creating their own products.

Student-focused Activities:

What activities will your students do during this lesson or project??

During reading, students will need to be mindful of information as it is being processed and are practicing reflective notetaking during reading. After reading, generating a product to share their reflections.Students print and share with others via a classroom bulletin board and use QR Code Reader technology to look at the work of peers to get a taste of other books that may interest them.

Optional Extension

Activities:

What activities could your students do to extend the knowledge gained from this lesson or project?

There is a section in the notetaking worksheet that allows for additional or interesting information or insights that students can include in their posters. Though this information is not required, it certainly allows students to elevate their work from proficient mastery of the skill to advanced mastery.Students may look for oportunites to research time periods, historical figures portrayed in stories, events stories take place during, or other topics to include in their poster. The QR Code generation website allows for websites and photographs to be included as well to further enhance the quality and quantity of information being shared.

Student Assessment/ Evaluation: How will you assess the extent to which the students have achieved the goals and objectives (including the curriculum and technology standards)?

Assessment will be evaluated through the use of a 4-point rubric that students will have constant access to so they understand the expectaions of this assignment before, during, and after working.

How and why do the particular technologies used in this lesson/project “fit” the content goals?Students use technology to consolidate many elements of their reading experiences into a smaller physical form that can be more easily shared than a poster with the same information written out upon it. While reading, students will need to be mindful of information as it is being processed. By setting apurpose for writing, students will better comprehend certain elements of the story more clearly than reading without a purpose. While notetaking, students are reflecting on the story in ways that deepen and enrich comprehension. By generating a product to share their reflections, they are solidifying their comprehension, reinforcing their reading strategies, and

taking ownership of their learning by sharing with others. By sharing with others and using QR Code Reader technology to look at the work of peers, they are widening their knowledge of potential reading endeavors by learning about other stories similar to the ways we learn about movies we may want to watch through media's use of trailors.

How and why do the particular technologies used in this lesson/project “fit” the instructional strategies?Students who engage in active reading develop and reinforce reading comprehension strategies more effectively and the use of the computer and iPods/iPads through QR Reader technology can increase the novelty or book reports and increase engagment and interest in reading. Sharing reading experiences through the use of QR Codes creates a digital book-club where students are engaged by the experiences of their peers which may drive their interests more so than a book recomendation from teachers. The project engages the highest retention opportunites as students are demonstrating their learning through an audio-visual respresentation that can be used to elicit group discussion. The components incorporated into the poster activates the every teir in Blooms Taxonomy to promote critical thinking, as well as reaches students of many learning styles.
