Transcript of Tech 9 Kiosk Honey Bees. The Queen of the hive is the ruler of the hive She lays all the eggs and is...
• The Queen of the hive is the ruler of the hive
• She lays all the eggs and is the only fertile bee in the hive
• She controls the hive with pheromones she produces
• The Queen is larger than all the other bees
• The Queen gets all these qualities from feeding off of royal jelly while in the larva stage
• The Queen is usually marked by a beekeeper
The Queen
• The males within the hive
• They do no jobs for the hive
• They are born to mate
• They are kicked out of the hive at winter
• There mating organ is barbed so when they breed, the organ is ripped out, and so is their stomach, so they die
Drones
• Worker bees make up most of the hive
• Worker bees do everything in the hive other then breed and lay eggs
• Worker bees are all females
• They have many jobs that are carried out at peak efficiency
• They are controlled by the queens pheromones
Worker bees
• Gatherers are worker bees whose sole purpose is to collect nectar and pollen
• They get all the food for the colony, but have the most dangerous jobs
• Gathers are targeted by predators, such as wasps, birds, and humans
• They are the bees you see flying around
• They get the food from plants
Gatherers
Bees• Pollinate• Feed off
of nectar in buds
Plants• Are
pollinated by the bees
• Produce buds to be pollinated
• Without bees, plants would get very little pollination
• Pollination makes the crop more than 100 times more successful
• Without nature around bees, they would die from starvation
The circle of pollination
• Honey is the nectar of many flowers mixed together then slightly dehydrated
• Honey has never goes bad, for instance, honey in King Tuts tomb is still edible
• Bees make it for food
Honey!!!
• Bees sting as a last ditch effort to protect the hive or as a final stand kind of defence
• The bees stinger is barbed, so after they sting, the stinger gets implanted and the barbs get stuck, securing the stinger to the body
• The stinger gets ripped out of the bee when it stings, ripping out internal organs in the process, killing it as well
• The stinger has a muscle attached to it so that it keeps pumping venom even, when the stinger is no longer attached to the bee
• Bees stings are a very common allergen
Why do bees sting?
• Bees live in hives of up to 80 000
• Some bee hives have been as big as the wall of a house
• Bee hives are full of honey comb, which are all perfect hexagons, even though they have no guide to work off of
