But India is there, important, even in the title of this performance – that so many spectators have experienced inevitably as potentially “the last” of this great artist – of this performance that cries out to the world: “What to do?”.

At present Une Chambre en Inde, Ariana Mnouchkine’s latest performance, is famous. We just won the Prix Molière 2018. The audience welcomed it, imme-diately, and constantly, with joy, laughter, tears and participation: accordingly, a successful performance. But from the inside, I assure you, it was something else altogether. A maze. A riddle, for us who were trying to put it together. A ques-tion mark, right up to the end. Even for me, who have been working with Ariane for thirty-one years – I am the actor who has worked longest with her. It was a strange journey in India and Paris. I’ll tell you all about it.

)UDQFR5XI¿QLAfterthought on Giovanni Grasso. A Dual Theatre. Since appearing in bibliographic subentry “Grasso” in Enciclopedia dello Spettaco-lo, Isaak Babel’s tale on Giovanni Grasso’s performance in Odessa in 1908 has become one of the founding myths of the theatre, one of those occurrences that immediately lose the quality of anecdotes, and to which one goes back contin-uously to reconsider, as knots. This essay is, on the part of the writer, another afterthought of the myth of Giovanni Grasso. Perhaps the last, since it comes to an elementary result: the dual nature of the theatre, where amateur performance coexists in organic need with professionalism, amateurs with artists bred in a IDPLO\ RI WKHDWUH DUWLVWV ORZ WKHDWUHZLWK KLJK WKHDWUH$QGZKHUH ¿QDOO\ WKHtragic talent of Grasso and his experience as a puppeteer no longer come up as a problem, but as the proof of a non-existent problem.

Folco emphasizes the risk he took in inviting an unknown theatre company to France and, what is more, a company performing in the Sicilian dialect; and highlights his choice to play with the expectations of theatre-goers, arousing the curiosity of even the most sophisticated public who went in search of unpredictable experiences.

Jouve shows how the glittery American environment of those years welcomed the Sicilian company, and also highlights the contribution of the different cultural communities, whose co-pres-ence at the same event resulted in a unique theatrical melting pot, a fundamental factor for all twentieth century theatre.

Béatrice Picon Vallin, Meyerhold and the Puppets

In the poem The Treasury, dating from 1944, in which Eisenstein recalls the archives of his master Meyerhold, there is evidence that Meyerhold possessed a Javanese puppet and that he knew how to manipulate it with skill, grace and charm, exhibiting it as a model in his classes for the would-be actors of his Stu-dios. Taking these memories as a starting point, the essay traces out the stimuli DQG LQÀXHQFH H[HUWHG E\ SXSSHW WKHDWUH RQ0H\HUKROG¶VZRUN DQG UHVHDUFK RQBiomechanics. During the entire arc of his artistic biography, these “theatrical marvels” represented a privileged source of inspiration that led him to change the acting technique of his actors and their relationship with the audience. Many, and present all over his writings as well as his performances, are the signs that testify the Russian director’s interest in the puppet theatre – Western and Asian.

Manuela Pietraforte, My Square. A Letter

In the last two years I have found myself in Ethiopia and then in South Su-dan. I owe it to my profession: I am an actress. I caught sight of the miseries of the Third World, of dictatorship and civil war, while passing through all this as a protected outsider, as an operator who observes and intervenes in a universe that is not hers, knowing full well that in a few months I would be returning home, WRWKHZHOOEHLQJDQGWKHVDIHW\RID)LUVW:RUOGFRXQWU\VXI¿FLHQWO\GHPRFUDWLFand in a state of peace. But this awareness offers no protection: for as long as it lasts, life while on mission tears you away from your habits, from everything that normally comforts you, from what you think you already know about the world. It takes you away to plunge you into another dimension, far from your space and time, where nothing is left of you except the essentials. It disorientates you in order to bring you back to your centre.

From 2005 to 2010 together with some operators of Amref (African As-sociation for Medical Research in East Africa), I created the project mAlkiA, a theatre-training workshop for women. The central theme was the problem of the teenage mothers. At the end of the second stage, one of the participants, Ann, drew an oval shape and said: «For me the theatre is like an egg: when it breaks it becomes something else, something is born». I proposed to put on stage an adaptation of The Caucasian Chalk Circle, and I assigned the role of Grusha to Rachel Wamaitha. Rachel was the youngest in the group. She said she was born in the slum of Dagoretti in 1994 (stray children are not registered in the civil reg-istry), she never crossed the threshold of a school, she lived on the street and slept under trucks. The theatre offered her an opportunity to feel integrated. I saw her transform. That’s why I wanted to commemorate her very short journey, and not just for this: when the project came to an end, Rachel disappeared, as so often is WKHFDVHZLWKVWUD\FKLOGUHQLQ1DLUREL,ORRNHGDOORYHUIRUKHU,FRXOGQRW¿QGher. Marina Fabbri, 2VLĔVNL7UDFHVWKH:D\0HPRULHVRID0DVWHU. With twelve Letters by Grotowski

With his well-known sly and nevertheless affectionate irony, Ludwik Flaszen FDOOHG=ELJQLHZ2VLĔVNLWKHFRQWHPSRUDU\LQFDUQDWLRQRI*DOOXV$QRQ\PXVWKH%HQHGLFWLQHPRQNRIWKH;,;,,FHQWXU\ZKRZURWHWKH¿UVWFKURQLFOHRIWKH3ROLVKVWDWH,QKLVVW\OHRIZULWLQJLQSHUVHYHULQJKLVVWXGLHV2VLĔVNLDOZD\VWULHGWRremain anonymous and distant from the object of his research. When I met him in the summer of 1979, in Santarcangelo di Romagna, to my eyes he looked like a strange intellectual: very different from how I would imagine a university pro-fessor to be. Not so much because he followed a theatre group and shared their training activity (showing great physical form, which, I believe, was due to the DWKOHWLFDFWLYLWLHVRIKLV\RXWK$OOLQDOOWKLVZDVWKHHUDRIWKHµWKLUGWKHDWUH¶and in Italy some professors such as Ferdinando Taviani, Fabrizio Cruciani and )UDQFR5XI¿QLDPRQJRWKHUVKDGDOUHDG\UHVSRQGHGWRWKHFDOOPDGHE\(XJH-nio Barba to intellectuals to cultivate the object of their studies, and the expe-ULHQFHRIGRLQJWKHDWUHDVZHOO1R2VLĔVNLDSSHDUHGXQOLNHWKHRWKHUVLQDQRWKHUrespect. The fact is that he showed no sense of academic superiority, but humbly shared the passion for theatre with the actors of Gardzienice and with us young foreign apprentices who were following them. What he showed to us all was his passionate curiosity. In these pages I will try to outline his life as an anomalous scholar. Some of the letters that Grotowski sent him during their long collabora-tion are here published as documents of a kind of relationship, again an unusual one, between a great scholar and a great man of the theatre.

Ten years later, on March 4, 1948, Artaud died in the clinic in Ivry-sur-Seine where he had spent the last two years under the system of partial freedom. Between these two dates his book was republished and this re-edition was one of the reasons of his liberation. From then on, the publication gave rise to the growth of the number of translations and the rapid diffusion of Artaud’s book in the theatrical cultures of half the world. 7KH$PHULFDQHGLWLRQWKDWKDGVXFKJUHDWLQÀXHQFHRQWKH/LYLQJ7KHDWUHGDWHVfrom 1958, a few years later the Japanese one appeared and then, in a play of anniversaries and decennials, the Italian translation was published in 1968, the year of the protest movement. Artaud 2018 is not an essay nor a celebration. It is a reminder, and an attempt to recognize the messengers of Artaud’s theatrical message in the wake of the reception of the book and the fame of its author. Eugenio Barba, About Mario Delgado and Latin American countries

For me, Latin America is the women and men I met along my theatrical

journey and whose visionary character, dependence on dreams and obstinacy to

make them come true have been a real inspiration for my work with the actors of

the Odin Teatret. More than forty years have forged this particular brotherhood

with a few dozen of them, that is unique in the history of our craft. When I met

my Latin American friends I never wondered what region the accent of that bird-

group came from, or from which tree, from which branch, from which nest their

Mario Delgado, Carta a Eugenio Barba

11th January 1984: Mario Delgado writes to Eugenio Barba. This letter is one of the many stages of their correspondence. It discusses theatre: that is, YLVLRQVSURMHFWVDQGIXWXUHSHUIRUPDQFHV%XWLWDOVRGHDOVZLWKWKHYHU\GLI¿FXOWhistorical contingencies of the moment, with the terrorist movement of the Mao-ist Sendero Luminoso, and the operations of the armed forces. Such was the po-litical, economic and social context in which Mario Delgado’s theatrical action took place with his Peruvian group Cuatrotablas, a theatrical action which could also be the means of carrying out a lucid, necessary and daily form of resistance.

Dialogue Around a Book: Eugenio Barba, Nicola Savarese I cinque con-

7KLVLVVXHRI©7HDWURH6WRULDªFRQWDLQVDQRYHOW\LHDVPDOOQHZµJHQUH¶In the past, we have at times dedicated a dossier to people or events of the the-atre today. Now we wanted to experiment with a dossier dedicated to a book. By coincidence, we had the right opportunity at hand, a large volume – highly extra-daily – I cinque continenti del teatro. Fatti e leggende della cultura materia-

le dell’attore by Eugenio Barba and Nicola Savarese, Bari, Edizioni di Pagina, 2017. An excellent starting point to begin a discussion, especially because it is GLI¿FXOWWRNQRZZKDWWRVD\DERXWWKLVERRN,WLVDERRNWKDWJURZVIURPWKHGH-sire to wrong-foot the reader – and certainly succeeds in doing so. For this pilot effort, all the contributions to the dossier come from the editorial staff, besides those of the authors, who in turn have brought with them another novelty to the review, indeed, a case that will remain quite unique: an insert of colour images.
