Although these events occurred 2,500 years ago they are still of the greatest importance for our lives today . Even though we have made great advances in our understanding, human beings still suffer and create suffering for each other and our whol e world. This comes abo ut  because essentially we do not under- stand our selves; we labor under a cruel misconception of what we really are, thereby creating suffering. Several years ago one of the teachers in our school, Su Bong Sunim, had a very interesting experience while taking a ferry in New Y ork City. As he boarded the ferry he noticed that there was a local TV crew doing some lming. He didn’t think much about it and took his seat. Once under way the crew started mov- ing from passenger to passenger asking them questio ns. When they got to him they asked if they could ask a question. Then he understood — this was a crew shooting something for a “human inter- est” s lot on the eveni ng news. “Sure, sure, go ahead. I’d be happy to partici-  pate.” The newsman stuck the mic in front of Su Bong Sunim’s face and said, “What’s the most disgusting thing?” “What are you?” he red back. A look of consternation crossed the newsman’s face. “I ah… don’t know .” he stammered. “That’ s the most disgusting thing!” said Su Bong Sunim. The Buddha only taught about one thing: suffering and the relief of suffer- ing. We all know Buddha got enlight- enment when he saw the morning star. The suffering of our world was the cause of that enlightenment. In Buddhism we say that suffering was the true mother of Buddha. And the original source of that suffering is a basic misunderstanding of what we are as human beings. We don’t know what we are! We attach to desire, anger, and ignorance and think, “That’s us”. Buddha saw a star and attained what we call “star enli ghtenment”. But Zen Master Seung Sahn said that if Buddha got enlightenment today it would have to be “tear enlightenment”, the tears that come naturally when we experience the Tear  Enlightenment Zen Master Dae Kwang Continue on page 6 1 Dharma Joy 14/5 – 18/5 观音禅林庆祝 KYCL celebrates 佛陀日2555 Vesak Day 2555

Completely enveloped in and succoured by the whole

universe, you are like the mountains, like the seas, like

the great sky which knows no limits. This great, big

boundlessness is your own mind, ‘Big Mind’. To awak -

en to this Big Mind, just do whatever it is you are doing

right this moment with your whole heart. If you do withall your might, this world will, without fail, reveal itself

to you. This hard little lump of ‘self’ will dissolve, and

you will inevitably awaken to Big Mind.

‘Joyful Mind’ is the mind that cannot help but feel grati-

tude. It is not that you feel thankful because you are

supposed to feel thankful, but rather that you cannot

help but feel thankful. You feel so much gratitude that it

spills over as joy.

And then from that boundless joy, kindness arises, kind-

ness which is born from thoroughly exhausting all of one’s small self and merging to become one with others.

This is ‘Parental Mind’.

When Big Mind, Joyful Mind and Parental Mind come

together as one body, just this in itself is Bodhisattva

Mind.

Isn’t this, indeed, the very basis of all education of our

children? Shakyamuni Buddha and the patriarchs use

the same fundamentals in their teachings. Each child

begins with mastering the Big Mind. If this heart is en-

Big MindJoyful Mind

Parental MindHarada Tangen Roshi

couraged to spring forth, the child will naturally

become cheerful, and problems will take care of

themselves. The child will grow up to be someone

who is sensitive to the pain of others. Sensitivity to

others, joyousness which naturally ows — these

are gradually cultivated.

No matter how much you study, how many books

you read or how much theory you learn, this kind of

knowledge can only be an aid, but never the driv-

ing force, toward peace of mind. In fact, if one is

not careful, theoretical exercise can even be an ob-

stacle. The important thing is to let go of mind and

body and take refuge in truth itself. It is a matter of

permitting yourself, all you can, to recognize truth,

to sincerely live in here and now — which IS your

life.

If you see only the differences between yourself

and others, you feel easily irritated, overly sensi-

tive. If you’re out to take care of just your own little

self, guard your own little castle, protect your own

separate existence in whatever way you can, it’ll all

eventually just go under anyway, won’t it? So go

back to the starting point, return to your true home,

the home which is the same for every single being

in this world.

I want to see you awaken to your true self.

suffering of the world. We read the news; we see the suffering of our friends and family; we even see the suffer-

ing inside our selves. 2,500 years ago Buddha vowed to save all beings from suffering. 2,000 years ago Jesus

came to save humans from sin. How are they doing these days?

Actually, how they are doing is how we are doing. Friedrich Nietzsche, the famous German philosopher, said,

“If you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss also gazes into you.” This is also one of the essential insights of

the Buddha, everything is emptiness—ourselves, the world… everything, even our suffering. Zen Master Seung

Sahn once said that if someone really understood this world they would cut their hair immediately and go to the

mountain. But this is just the rst step. Our big job is to save all beings from suffering. That’s the job of Jesus,

Buddha, and you and me. So, I hope we can together only go straight, practice hard, get enlightenment and help

save our world from suffering. That’s our great vow and true Vesak Day.

New Book @ Zen Shop

Elegant Failure: A Guide to Zen KoansBy Richard Shrobe

During a workshop at the Whole World is

a Single Flower Conference, Zen Master Seong Hyang said, “Kong-ans are the root

of our practice. Kong-ans are like receiving

a gift. There’s the package: it’s beautifully

wrapped, there’s a ribbon, wrapping paper,

a beautiful box, and when you open the box

there’s tissue paper. But what you really

want is the gift inside, which is our true self.

The very heart of the gift is to ask, “what is

this?… what am I?” until it’s totally unl-

tered, totally present and intimate.”

This book by Zen Master Wu Kwang (Richard Shrobe), said Zen

Master Seong Hyang, “is a generous and insightful guide and com-

mentary on Zen kong-ans. Because of his many years of practice,

Richard has the ability to point directly to the mirror of these ancient

teachings. ”

A year has passed since the construction of the new Zen Centre

began in 2010. To date, 8 storeys of the building structure have

been completed, and the next phase will focus on the construction

of the interior. As the interior design of the new building directly

inuences the atmosphere of our activities in it, we will have to pay

more attention to this aspect. From the doors to the lights, to each

tile, we have to be meticulous and prudent in making decisions, to

balance cost with practicality. Recently, Venerable Chi Boon, made

a trip to Korea to order three Buddha statues for the Buddha hall. He

also went to China to order a wooden sculpture of Bodhidharma for

the Zen hall. Building activities are tightly packed, and everything is

 progressing rapidly.

While putting our best efforts to complete the new building, we

have to constantly remind ourselves not to be hasty, and to do things

systematically. We have to review our human and monetary resources

regularly to pace the progress of the new building construction. Where

necessary, we may need to complete our plan in phases.

The new Zen centre is estimated to complete at the end of this year,

so this is the crucial year. We will continue to raise funds this year for

the nal phase of the construction. Hence, we sincerely call upon all

Dharma friends to give your continuous support to KYCL and the newZen Centre, as well as to actively participate in the series of upcoming

fundraising , including Vesak celebration, fundraising dinner and so

on. With our together-action, may the construction project complete

successfully on time.
