TEAM: a group of people working together with one common goal. People work in teams every day – from sports to parenting, non-profits to sales. The employees of a successful business need to work as a team, too. At Hedrick Brothers Construction, our goal is Uncompromised Excellence in

everything we do, whether it is in the office, on a job site or in the community. There are two important factors to our teamwork:

1. Strategic Planning, which incorporates our vision, mission, brand promise, goals and initiatives, which all team members are involved with, contribute to and are responsible for fulfilling; and

2. On-going training that encourages individual growth both professionally and personally such as OSHA Construction Outreach and Leadership, and bi-monthly Lunch & Learns on Making a Difference through Volunteerism, Financial Health: Planning for Retirement, and Heart Healthy Living.

Mentoring is also an important part of building a team and to supporting and encouraging the next generation. Here are two great examples:

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County, featured in our cover story, provide more than a safe, fun and constructive alternative to being home alone – they offer a variety of award-winning developmental programs to help youth build skills, self-esteem and values during critical periods of growth.

We are once again participating in the ACE Mentor Program at Atlantic Community High School. Led by project manager, Allen Gast, 16 students in the Construction Career Academy meet after school once a month from October through May. Four of these students, seniors Shlighton Estime, Joseph Philogene, Perry Alfred and Daniel Norzea, are gaining additional construction experience – wanting to “leave their mark.” They found this opportunity by building the Eagle Nest House in Delray Beach. Upon graduation from the Construction Academy, the students receive an Industry Certification in the field of construction and can immediately be employable after high school. But these four gentlemen have bigger plans and goals … their future includes college degrees in engineering and architecture. Watch out world!

Max M. Fisher Boys & girls Club Riviera Beach, Florida

After opening in the City of Riviera Beach’s former fire station in 1991, the Boys & Girls Club reached capacity within a year and moved to the former Riviera Beach Elementary School. Built in 1926, the outdated school lacked sufficient space and amenities to serve the nearly 500 children in need, from ages six to 18.

In 2009, construction of the new Max M. Fisher Boys & Girls Club in Riviera Beach began, with collaboration among the owner, architect, design consultants and builder— from the initial concept through completion—enabling the team to have a clear understanding of the client’s needs and expectations. This partnership approach optimized the fit between design and budget, provided the ability to forecast ahead of schedule, and ensured the selection of qualified specialty trades.

The new 22,570 SF building opened in November 2010 and includes a new athletic field and parking spaces. The building houses an education center, computer lab, full-size gymnasium, game rooms, arts and crafts center, dance and music studios, teen center, kitchen, and numerous multi-purpose areas.

The team has been reunited to begin construction on the new Marjorie S. Fisher Boys & Girls Club in West Palm Beach, Florida. The 21,953 SF tilt-wall building will have a gymnasium, arts and crafts, computer, science, and teen game rooms, multipurpose spaces for cadets and juniors, and a canteen. The 12.13 acres will also include construction of two retention basins, a realigned roadway and intersection improvements.

Congratulations to the donors and staff of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County for their efforts in making a difference in the lives of so many youngsters.

Palm Beach Residence

The residential division of Hedrick Brothers Construction is consistently recommended for their quality craftsmanship, attention to detail and client-focused commitment.

The team of Gene Parker, executive vice president; Steve Videon, superintendent; Tom Holt, superintendent, Judy Powers, project administrator and Don Walke, project manager are to be commended for a recently completed Palm Beach, Florida residence. The restoration and renovation of this landmarked 1926 Mediterranean revival-style 19,000 SF main house, 4,000 SF guest house, and a new 289 LF seawall exemplifies true collaboration for this uniquely situated property.

Distinctive elements included restoration of the profiles of the eaves and cornice details, as well as the stone surrounds around the two primary entrances on the south and east faces; the front lawn area was raised 10 feet to create a view that “hides” the traffic so the ocean view is unobstructed; the restoration of a raised garden area with wall fountains; and a “bridge” that connects the main house to the guest house.

Elizabeth Donnell Kay was the first owner of this home and is often credited with being the original designer. Mark Marsh of Bridges Marsh Architects and landscape architect, Sanchez and Maddox, carried on this tradition.

“In a meeting with the owner, he stated that it is unheard of in today’s

time that people do what they say they’re going to do; this exemplifies

this team’s efforts,” said Gene Parker, executive vice president.

Vinceremos Therapeutic Riding Center, inc. loxahatchee, Florida

Hedrick Brothers Construction is proud to have been selected to build the new covered shelter and parking area for the Vinceremos Therapeutic Riding Center in Loxahatchee, Florida. Vinceremos currently works with 350 students and has a stable of 14 horses. The covered shelter will allow the center to provide year-round service to clients who are sensitive to the heat and will keep the program operational in the event of inclement weather. Alan Gerwig and Associates is the project engineer.

Meet The Team:

Steve Videon With more than 42 years in construction, Steve is a West Palm Beach native who has worked in the residential division since 1997. As the superintendent for this project, with his main focus on the home’s interior, he believes it is always a plus when a home can be restored back to its original state and relishes the challenge of schedules so that in the end, the owner can move in on the promised date no matter what changes come down the road. In his spare time, Steve rides his bicycle each weekend.

Tom Holt As the superintendent responsible for the exterior structural, landscape and hardscape elements of this project, Tom Holt used his 25 years of construction experience to, in his words, “make this property once more unique for the area.” Tom, his wife, and four children are all involved in school, sports and church activities.

Judy Powers As the assistant project manager, with 23 years of construction industry experience, Judy Powers’ role included planning, scheduling, subcontractor contracts and procurement. She enjoys volunteer work, serving as president of the Council of Catholic Women, reading, and sudoku.
