Teamsters from New York and New Jersey joined the rally in Staten Island on November 25th to support Amazon workers, alongside community allies from Make the Road New York, ALIGN, and New York Communities for Change. Workers at the Staten Island Amazon warehouse are entering peak season, which all logistics workers know means pressure to move more and more packages, faster and faster. A recent report found that Amazon facilities have injury rates far higher than average for warehousing and other sectors. Sen. Diane Savino (D-Staten Island/Brooklyn) said: “This organization made a commitment to the people of Staten Island to deliver a state-of- the-art facility. They did that. They said they were going to create good jobs and good benefits. They didn’t do that.” “They said they were going to treat people (employees) with dignity and respect. They didn’t do that. You know who they treat with dignity and respect? Their robots,” she added. “I fully support what they are doing here today”, said Rep. Max Rose (D- Staten Island/Brooklyn). “No company, let alone a multi-billion dollar global enterprise, has the right to disrespect people, let alone hard-working Americans who follow the rules, like these people have been. These people are suffering injuries as if they are working in a coal mine. We will not stop fighting for them and fighting along side them.” “Teamsters Local 295, Joint Council 16, Joint Council 73 and the IBT support the Amazon workers with hopes to form a Union”. VICTORY THROUGH UNITY I hope this newsletter finds you and your family healthy and well. With the help and support of the Teamster Local 295

members, Stewards, Business Agents and our Executive Board we have completed a successful year. We are thankful to say

that the promises made to the members to protect and serve their best interest have been kept. On a whole our Local 295

contracts continue to ensure our members job security, good wages and benefits. We have also faced challenges and

upsets through this year which we have met and remedied those that were unjust.

The companies that this Local represents have been successful and profitable as a result of their workers, the honest and

hard-working employees that we are lucky to represent. We come from all walks of life, cultures, religion, races, and

genders. Our belief in the Teamster labor movement and the sense of true trade unionism is what unifies and protects us. I

have been a proud working member of Local 295 for 40 years and I am thankful for all the good things, good people and

good times I have enjoyed throughout my teamster membership. My family and I have enjoyed a good steady income,

healthcare and will one day receive my pension benefit. Nothing is or ever was perfect with my life or this Local, but I have

always tried to correct a wrong, to watch out for others and to respect everyone and I am proud to share this mission with

my Local 295 brothers and sisters.

Congratulations to this year‘s Local 295 Scholarship Fund winners and their parents for their achievements now and in their

future. I am happy to also congratulate the two dependents Dylan Macejko and Kumar Pavani who were awarded a James

R. Hoffa Boot Strap Scholarship Award. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all the generous contributors to our

Local 295 Scholarship Fund, the members, Val, Vinny, Jack, all our stewards and alternates for their efforts, generosity and

all their support and hard work throughout the year.

May God bless all our servicemen and women who protect our freedom every day. I wish you all a Merry Christmas, a

happy holiday season and a healthy and prosperous New Year!

Lou Calemine, President - Local 295

Retirement

Congratulations to recently retired DHL / NWK Shop Steward

Jack Horta (L) who has 34 years as a Union member and AEI

Clerical Shop Steward Angel Sanchez (R) who has 42 years as

a Union Member. We wish them the best of luck!

Retirement is defined as the action or fact of leaving one’s job and ceasing to work.

The Local 295 Pension Fund was started over 60 Years ago and is a Defined Benefit Multi Employer Fund. Our Pension Fund is entirely funded through Employer contributions required under our Teamster 295 Collective Bargaining Agreements that are negotiated by this Local Union. As per the Department of Labor Statistics only 3.1% of workers will get a Private Sector Pension.

After the Stock Market crash of 2009 and the massive layoffs at our biggest Employer DHL Express in 2010 we were required by the Pension Protection Act to adopt a pension fund rehab plan. This year our 295 Pension Fund is funded at approximately 89% and is on track to complete our Rehab Plan in the near future. Over the last 19 years our Pension Fund has paid out over a HALF BILLION DOLLARS of benefits to our Local 295 retirees, spouses and beneficiary’s.

Here are names of over 150 Local 295 members, spouses and beneficiaries who have recently retired in 2019 or have started to collect a monthly pension benefit from our Local 295 Pension Fund. “I would like to congratulate all the 2019 retirees and wish them many years of good health and prosperity.” Said Lou Calemine

PREVENTATIVE SCREENING WELLNESS BENEFIT CARDIOVASCULAR AND THYROID CANCER SCREENING

BRING IN 2020 WITH GREAT HEALTH

In our continuing effort to track the latest innovative technology and provide truly comprehensive health screening programs to our participants, Local 295 Health & Welfare Fund introduced a new preventive screening and wellness program with HeartScan Services.

This preventive screening program focuses on identifying early stages of heart, carotid (stroke), thyroid cancer (nodules) and abdominal aortic aneurysm. These diseases are preventable if detected and treated early and are rarely screened for in your annual physical. Most people are symptom free and therefore most insurance companies will not cover the screens that identify their risk factors.

We would like to encourage all our members and their spouses in 2020 to take advantage of this program. HeartScan Services locations are:

• 3000 Hempstead Turnpike (4th floor -suite 417)-Levittown, NY 11757

• New York City -116 West 23rd St. NY, NY 10011

FREE for members and spouses in the Local 295 H & W Fund
