Daycare shuttle service for preschool childrenBethany Lutheran Daycare in McCallsburg is considering offering shuttle service to bring preschool children to the Daycare Center in the daycare van. We would like to know if there is interest among the preschool families for childcare on Mondays when there is no preschool. We are looking into having one pickup point in Colo and one in Zearing for preschool children to then be shuttled to the daycare for the day.

Another shuttle service consideration is to bring preschool children who do not go to afternoon preschool to the daycare for the rest of the day.

If it is feasible this service would begin in the fall with signup at school registration in August. We need to find out if there is enough interest to make it cost effective for the daycare. Your cooperation will help us make plans for fall. If you will have a child in preschool next fall, please fill out this questionnaire and return it to the preschool teacher. Thanks very much.

SCHOOL BOARD MEETING HIGHLIGHTS

Monday, May 20, 2019

The Colo-NESCO School Board met in regular session on Monday, May 20.

Travis Owens, Colo-NESCO Athletic Director, shared with the Board the number of students involved with extra-curricular activities this current year. He also broke it out based on the number in each activity.

• 69% of our high school student body is out for at least 1 sport

• 40% of the high school student body is out for Chorus

• 30% of the high school student body is out for Band

Travis then reviewed with the Board the steps that the District has in place for student athletes who have suffered a con-cussion and when they can return to play. Per House File 2442, School Districts must adopt a protocol by July 1, 2019 noting the process it will use before allowing a student athlete to return to play. Further, Travis noted that the District also needs to have a “Return–to-Learn” plan in place for their student athletes.

The next item on the agenda was a discussion with ISG (District Architectural Firm) in regards to various options in making the Zearing Elementary more handicap accessible. Nathan Compton, from ISG, shared with the board various options in constructing a ramp from the new addition across the courtyard to the gym lobby area. Discussion centered on the types of construction - wood versus block. Accessibility to the courtyard for construction of the ramp was also a concern and the costs involved in just getting material into the area. Another alternate route considered was ramping the inside hallways through the three story building from the gym lobby to the new addition, with a handicap lift being used for access from the gym lobby to the gym. The Board directed ISG and administration to dig deeper into the costs of the various options and to come back to the Board at the next meeting with more detailed information.

The Board then discussed potential Summer PPEL Projects and whether some and or all of them should be addressed this summer. The Board approved the following projects for this summer:

•Retrofittingthehomefootballbleacherswiththeadditionofahandicapaccessiblerampontheeastsideofthe bleachers for a cost $21,816.00 to American Aluminum Seating, Inc. The cost of the concrete pad for the ramp and accessibility to the concession stand was estimated to be an additional $3,600.00

•ReplacementoftheColoMS/HSWeightRoomRooftoAcademyRoofingandSheetMetalCompanyfor $54,300.00

The other items on the list, which were not acted on by the Board at this time, was the replacing of the boiler heating sys-temforthelunchroom/kitchen/fitnessrooms/gymatMcCallsburg,removingthepeagravelandreplacingwithsodontheold playground at Colo and then replacing the stage risers. Action items approved by the Board were:

• Student Handbooks for 2019-2020 School Year

• Story County Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan

• Story County Educational Consortium Agreement for Service

Representatives from the Bethany Lutheran Church Daycare Program were present for the renewal of the lease with the school district for the use of the new addition at McCallsburg. The Board approved the renewal with Daycare.

An additional item approved by the School Board was an administrative team request to change the School Calendar for the 2019-2020 school year. The change involves moving the Staff Workday scheduled for Friday October 25th to Tuesday, October 29th. The purpose for the change is so that the District could have Brian Mendler return to work with the teaching staff as a follow-up to his August presentation. Brian is the kickoff speaker in August and his message is: “Working with Challenging Students”.

SCHOOL BOARD MEETING HIGHLIGHTS Thursday, June 6, 2019

The Colo-NESCO School Board had a special board meeting and work session on Thursday, June 6th .

The first order of business during the special session was Board approval for the construction of access ramps from the gym lobby through the three-story building to the new addition at Zearing. This project was awarded to Breer Builders Inc. for $10,500.00. Further, the Board awarded to Access Elevator & Lifts (AEL) the installation of a platform lift connecting the cafeteria to the gym lobby for $26,450.00. The end result of these two approvals is that all areas of the Zearing Elementary would be accessible for all community members, parents, students and staff who have mobility problems through the use of the elevator, lift or ramp.

In another action item, the Board approved the updating of the heating and cooling and door replacement of the Zearing Elementary Art Room. The heating and cooling contract was awarded to C&K Heating and Cooling for $6,800.00, while the door replacement went to Southern Lock and Glass for $6,366.44. The District is still gathering quotes for the replacement of lights and the updating of the electrical in the elementary art room.

The School Board also approved personnel recommendations presented by administration with the resignation of science teacher Lance Baestle, along with JH Assistant Boys Basketball Coach Nathan Ramthun and Speech Coach, Noah Ronnfeldt. Included with the approval was the 2019-2020 contracts for District Business Office Staff.

The last item addressed during the special session was the approval of increasing substitute teacher pay for the 2019-2020 school year to $120.00 per day, with an increase to $135.00 per day once the individual has subbed for the District twenty (20) days.

The next item on the agenda was the Board Work Session. This work session involved a discussion with ISG (District Architectural Firm) in regards to identifying issues or items that need to be addressed in the District’s long-term facili-ty plan. ISG also shared with the Board a facility timeline for their review.

The next regular board meeting will be held at 6:30 pm on Monday, June 17th at Colo in the Media Center.

SCHOOL BOARD MEETING HIGHLIGHTS Monday, June 17, 2019

The Colo-NESCO School Board met in regular session on Monday, June 17.

Jamie Stensland, American Heart Association Representative, shared with the School Board the activities and ser-vices that the American Heart Association was able to provide for the District this past year. She noted that through the American Heart Association the PE Department would receive $550.00 of free PE equipment.

Mr. Walker, Superintendent, reported on the activities of the Wellness Committee this past year. The committee was made up of administration, students, staff, parents and community members. It was noted that the committee met three times this past year with a focus on reviewing the school board wellness policy. In this review, staff provided the committee insights on how it was addressing the areas noted in the board wellness policy. Through this review, the Committee came up with some ideas for the 2019-2020 school year to promote healthy lifestyles – such as a) Family Fit Night at the Elementary; b) Quarterly Presentations at the MS/HS by various health professionals address-ing – vaping, nutrition, and fitness; and c) staff wellness activities. It was mentioned by a board member whether a Shooting Club would be an activity that could be provided for students. Administration was going gather more information on the topic.

In other business, the Board reviewed the first reading of Board Policy 905.2 Tobacco-Free Environment. It was not-ed that the Iowa Department of Health was recommending that school districts update their tobacco policy so that it was more comprehensive, specifically noting electronic smoking devices, cigars, chewing tobacco, snuff pipe, and snus, in addition to cigarettes. In the discussion about the policy, Board members asked about awareness programs (similar to DARE) concerning vaping for not only students, but also parents. The second reading will be at the July 15th board meeting.

An additional item of discussion was health insurance for support staff. Lisa Waddell, Business Manager, shared that she has been researching costs for providing health insurance for support staff who work over thirty hours a week and currently do not have it offered to them. The requirement is that District needs to provide some “affordable cov-erage” for support staff that meets the guidelines for hours worked. The Board brainstormed different options for meeting this requirement. Administration will be bringing back a recommendation at the next board meeting.

In the action agenda the Board approved the following items:

a) Emergency Operation Plan

b) Milk Bid from Anderson Erickson of $0.2250 for ½ pint 1% milk with escalator clause for one year

c) Fuel Bid from New Century FS

d) “ Return to Play/Return to Learn” protocol for students suffering from a concussion

e) Tractor Lease with Vetter Equipment for a one year lease for 150 hours at $5,250

Mr. Walker, Superintendent, shared with the Board that with the approval of personnel this evening all teacher open-ings had been filled for this upcoming school year. There would be seven new teachers on staff. He also noted that the Community Task Force initial meeting would be on Wednesday, July 17th at 7:00 pm in Colo. Notification would go out to Task Force members this week about the meeting.

The next regular school board meeting will be held at 6:30 pm on Monday, July 15th at Colo in the Media Center.
