The Section Board had its winter meeting this January and worked very hard for two days. I thank all of the Board Members for their hard work. This Board is running your Section in a very responsible way and is being a good steward of your PGA funds. We had much discussion about how to prioritize the Section funds and

will continue that process in the future. One of the areas that the Pacific Northwest Section has prioritized for many years is the tournament program. Our program is the strongest of any Section in the country. We can only continue that if we fill our tournaments. If you didn’t play in any Section events last year make it goal to play in one or two this year. They are a wonderful avenue to take some members, play great golf courses and get to know your members better.

Another area of emphasis is employment and how can we help members with their jobs. First you must be willing to help yourself. One of the important ways to do that is to fill out the member compensation survey. This truly gives our employment services people the information needed to help us. Click here or go to pgalinks.com to find the survey and fill it out before March 1st. Additionally, if you need help at your job, call Jeff Beaudry. Jeff is always there to help and is a great resource. Jeff can be reached by calling 801-568-3980 or via e-mail at [email protected].

Spring is just around the corner, it is time to get ready for the season. Our industry is about service; determine how you can service your members better and have a great season.

Spring is just around the corner and with it the golf season will be in full swing. Our shops will be busy, we’ll be camped out on the lesson tee and there just won’t be time to sew up those last few MSR credits. If this is in your future, be sure you take advantage of our education programs and attend the Section Spring Meeting or your Chapter Meeting before time slips away.

The Professional Development Program cycle ends on June 15 but our schedule provides most of your opportunities NOW. Members, you can check your status by logging into your account at PGALinks. Your totals (and the details) are readily available so you can confirm your personal status.

Your Section Board with the help of the Chapter Boards has instituted a new initiative to recognize the efforts of our major sponsors and enhance the image of you the PGA Professional at your club and in the community. Each year, organizations like Camp Korey, the Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery, Patriot Golf Day and ChristieCare partner with the PGA to develop fantastic tournaments and develop important funding for local charities. The new initiative is designed to raise money for our charities and show our appreciation for the great work these charities do on our behalf to build excellent championships. As a PGA Professional, it can only enhance your position to be viewed by your members and customers as a champion of such great organizations. Our goal, develop turn-key programs you can institute with minimal disruption of your normal day that will benefit our charities. Look for more details in the near future on three programs – a special pro-am, PGA Golf Day, and simple Field Day donations at your club. If 100 clubs raised just $1,000 each that would be a pretty special effort. I know we can all raise $1,000!

With this issue of ForeWord Press we will start highlighting one PGA member benefit in each issue. We hope this helps you identify opportunities where you can take advantage of these programs. This month, we highlight Hertz. There are three elements to this program – Free Hertz #1 Club, a Discount Code for PGA Professionals and a Discount Code you can offer your golfers. With the #1 Club you by-pass the counter and your car is waiting. You will also earn Golf Retirement Plus incentives! The Discount Codes help you secure the best rates around….check them out and pass them on to your membership and customers. Details on the Hertz promotions can be found on page 11 and on PGALinks.

Marlena Cannon is hard at work redesigning the Section web

site. One new feature already in place is Section News. Visit the “Section News” link on the web site for short updates designed to keep you informed about happenings in the Section. Recent history does not support this but we really do try to avoid filling up your mailbox! Check the Section News link frequently for current events. There is also a calendar feature available through this link to help you see what is on the horizon.

We welcome two new staff members this month. Jenna Moye` joins the team as our Tournament Assistant helping Molly Cooper administer your tournament program. When Jenna calls, please call her back….you probably forgot to sign your entry! Caitlin Holloway is our new receptionist. Caitlin will be on the phones from 9:00 to 1:00 each day, managing our incoming lines to the rest of the staff can be hard at work. Angela will bring her up to speed quickly but please help Caitlin understand our PGA terminology when you call. It can be a little confusing to new people until they realize that the PGA, PPC, CPC and Section Championship are the same event!

Back by popular demand is the Senior Players Championship. We are working on dates, sites and perhaps a few format tweaks. Watch your email and ForeWord Press for more information. We will have it all worked out before the next issue.Sponsors, Sponsors, Sponsors….we are very lucky to receive tremendous support from many friends who make enhance our programs and purses. It is always helpful when I work the floor in Orlando to hear what great support our sponsors see from you the PGA Professional – thank you. As we open the New Year our sponsor list is pretty impressive:

Twelve Section professionals and their members enjoyed the sunshine and hospitality of the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel on the Big Island for the 36th Annual Pacific Northwest PGA Winter Pro-Am. Host professional Tom Sursely welcomed the players to the popular Mauna Lani North and South courses in between excursions to the volcano, deep sea fishing and just soaking up some rays at the many beaches on the island. Temperatures stayed at 80 degrees all week for the players.

Congratulations to Ray Comella of Eastmoreland and his amateurs Sam Bars, Kent Brook, J.D. Hill and Rick Rooney for winning the grand prize in the popular stableford event! They won by eight points over the team from Wine Valley GC headed by professional John Thorsnes and amateurs Mike Kloenne, Tony Hoffman, Lonnie Ness and Dale Johnson.

Low professional honors went to Jason Aichele of Meadow Springs CC at 82 points once again. Ray Comella of Eastmoreland GC finished in second one point back.

Special thanks go to Jeff Peden and Gary Mogg of Under Armour and Gear Sports for bringing us this great sponsorship. In addition to their winter tans and the tournament payout, all players received an Under Armour shirt.

Thank you Jeff Peden, Gary Mogg and Under Armour for a great year!

Valuable Time SpentBy Jeff Beaudry, PGAPGA Employment Services

Right now it may be hard to imagine how busy PGA Professionals are in high season, so the need to take some time in the off-season to recharge is understandable. One of the best ways to look forward to the upcoming season is to enjoy a less hectic pace when it is available.

That being said, there are a few important things you can do to assist not only your employer, but yourself and your future.

Review Career Links Profile. There have been a number •of attractive opportunities this hiring season and we never know when just the right opportunity for you will come up. Take a few minutes and make sure your CareerLinks ProFile reflects your skills and preferences.

Complete 2011 Compensation Survey. The •Compensation Survey provides vital data as you calculate your value and also as you consider other opportunities.

Update your resume. As employers allow less and •less time between the time you are notified and the resume deadline, candidates often feel they don’t have sufficient time to put their best resume effort in front of the committee. As one of my Employment Services colleagues noted: “A job search is like a golf tournament – except only first place gets paid.” Be sure to devote the effort that gives you the best chance to be selected.

Utilize the PGA Professional Report. Utilize this template •to itemize and demonstrate your value.

Review PGA Best Practices. Your fellow professionals •have listed some of their most successful programs and practices on PGALinks.com. Surfing through them, you are certain to find something to incorporate into your operation.

Prepare a 2011 Business Plan detailing strategy to increase •rounds/revenue and customer service and how that will positively affect bottom line.

Finally, contact your Employment Consultant for •assistance with:

Career Links Profile•Reviewing resume•Short and long-term career strategy•Employment Services tools available to PGA •members

The current MSR cycle ends on June 15, 2011 and members will not only need their total of 54 credits but 12 of those credits will need to be in Meetings and 12 will need to be in Education. You can check your personal MSR status by logging into your PGALinks account. Your credit balance will be right there on your home page and the detail is available with one more click.

For those who are short a few credits, the Meeting Credits seem to be the problem. To provide all members the opportunity to complete their requirements before the deadline, the Section and Chapter Spring Meeting schedule is listed here. There are plenty of credits still available but please plan ahead so you avoid Class F status on June 16. There will be no additional meetings scheduled in the Section or Chapters prior to the deadline.
