The Japanese ume blossom, also called the Japanese apricot or plum, is often mistaken for the cherry blossom although it blooms much earlier. Known as the first sign of the new year or spring, the kanji for ume, 梅, reflects its status in Japanese symbology. The kanji is a combi-nation of two radicals, the first for tree 木 and the second for “every” 毎. Put together, the meaning becomes clear: the ume is the first blossoming tree 木, a symbol of new year and spring, which is known by everyone 毎.
