Teaching experience
Disney English (Foreign trainer) – July 2014 to Present Date: China
Job description: My role as a foreign trainer with Disney English is to teach English (predominately American English) speaking, listening, reading and writing to Chinese students aged 4-12 using the Disney curriculum. Classes are no more than 15 students. Disney English combines the Disney “show” with professionalism of which makes it quite a unique language school.
Skills and responsibilities:
Create and teach lesson plans for up to 10 classes following the Disney curriculum based around their age and assigned level.
Teach every class and build a great working relationship with my LP (learning partner or Chinese co-teacher).
Teach Demo classes to potential customers/students. Conduct and grade assessments at the middle and end of each 12 week term. Create a presentation for students to perform in front of their parents at the end of each term. Take audio recordings and pictures of students in class to upload onto the parent portal. Build and maintain a good relationship with students’ parents. Work in a professional environment following Disney’s “4 keys”: Safety, Courtesy, Show, and
Efficiency. Set KPI targets and goals such as keeping contract renewals at a healthy percentage. Maintain teaching standards from observations by line manager. Encouraged to self-evaluate and reflect on class performance and lesson plans. Created an Electronic Report Card Builder of which helps improve efficiency and work load for
teachers within the company (See projects).
Projects:
Summary:Disney English conducts 2 assessment stages for all its learners in every 12 week term. At each assessment stage the trainer must complete a report card, containing various information fields such as leaner name, date, trainer name, trainer assistant name, check boxes for in class behaviour/performance and a comments box in both English and Chinese for parents to read how their child is performing in class.
Problem:Before I joined Disney English the trainers would have to print the report card template and fill in the fields by hand for every leaner twice a 12 week term. Each trainer can have up to 150 learners, so that equates up to 300 report cards per term. This was very time consuming and inefficient process.
Solution:After doing the original process twice I decided there had to be a better way of doing this task. Using my IT/Microsoft Excel skills and initiative, I designed and built an electronic report card builder of which enabled the trainer to complete all the information required for each student in each class in a single table. This information would then be automatically put in the correct field on the corresponding report card template. The user then only needs to press a VBA scripted button to print all their report cards.
Once I had completed the project I took it to a Disney English idea share in Shanghai and it got a lot of positive feedback from everyone. Since then it is now being used by all Disney English across China.
Disney English are in the process of changing their course names and content scopes so new E-Report card builders will need to be built. I have been assigned this project and will also be implementing some new ideas, requirements and improvements from feedback into the new final version.
