Why?[Pedagogy] has been

noticeably under-represented” in the MOOC discourse (Bayne & Ross,

2014, p. 4).

Teachers’ roles in MOOCs are “both significant and neglected” (2014, p. 18).

What is teaching presence?

It’s a shifting and evolving concept that is tied to the organization of learning and the learning

ecology itself (Rodgers & Raider-Roth, 2006).

love this!
Suzan Koseoglu
thanks! :)

Teaching presence is more than synchronicity, direct communication, or visibility through multimedia; rather, it is about creating and

maintaining a meaningful and receptive relationship with learners.

...or among “esteemed co-learners” (Rheingold, 2014).

“...to be in connection with another human being a person needs to see and be seen by the other.”

(Rodgers & Raider Roth, 2006, p. 274)

which leads us to…

hybrid presence

Page 12: Teaching Presence in MOOCs: Perspectives and Learning Design Strategies

One that is not firmly set in either teacher presence, or learner presence, but rather somewhere in between.

Hybrid Presence briefly defined: https://youtu.be/BCoGkmDAo8U

Apostolos Koutropoulos
Added the video to YouTube but I haven't played a ton with the slides yet. I am going to spend time recording videos and posting them, and work on the slides later if I can to make them more visually appealing :)

"one that is not firmly set in either teacher presence, or learner presence, but rather somewherein between." - hybrid presence defintion
Suzan Koseoglu
I added the definition to the presentation, what do you think?
Apostolos Koutropoulos
I think it's good. I am looking for a good image to include here for hybrid presence
Suzan Koseoglu
perhaps a diagram showing that it's at the intersection of learner presence and teacher presence?
Apostolos Koutropoulos
that would be good. I just need to brainstorm a bit about some of the teacher and student qualities. - the venn diagram should be easy after that
Suzan Koseoglu
sure, I'll stop now, will refine my slides tomorrow based on your feedback. Which tool do you want to use for the presentation? If you'd liek you can record a video and put it on YouTube as a back up? Just let me know which slides you'd like to talk about and I'll cover the rest. Thanks so much!

Teachers can have complex and multidimensional roles in networked learning including “aggregating, curating, amplifying, modelling ... coaching

or mentoring” (Kop, Fournier, & Mak , 2011).

Some roles that cross boundaries: https://youtu.be/BTHXKbLmXjQ

Also through aggregating, remixing, repurposing, and feeding forward (Siemens and Downes, 2011), learners can, in fact, shape the course as

much as, and perhaps more than, the instructor.

Might this be a good image for this slide? --> http://www.ourdesign.us/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/mooc-connections1.jpgIt's a common image I've seen for cMOOCs and it encapsulates (with a little explaining) the 4 principles. What do you think?
Suzan Koseoglu
yes, I like it!

made this image black and white, what do you think?
Apostolos Koutropoulos
I like it! :)

Embrace Plasticity

Suzan Koseoglu
How about something like this here? http://www.brainhealthandpuzzles.com/images/brain_plasticity.jpg
Apostolos Koutropoulos
Not as much a fan of that image. The thing I liked about this one was the "playful" aspect of plasteline (play doh) :) Is there another playdoh image you like?
Suzan Koseoglu
this one remind me of molding (like molding the student brains, hehe), I'll check some playdoh pictures

awesome image!
Apostolos Koutropoulos
Thanks :) My wife helped me find it. I was thinking of an artist's studio (master/apprentice). No lecturing, but everyone works on the subject at hand (the model) and everyone critiques everyone else's work (and offers a hand when needed). - very much a hybrid presence situation :)

LOL, hadn't seen this before ;-)
Suzan Koseoglu
:) it's a great one! This one and Gardner Campbell's blog post are examples for "be present with fellow learners"

You cannot possibly know every individual or see every blog post, comment, or tweet. This often means that you will miss some things, and in missing them, miss entire consequences built upon them. So there will

also always have to be a humility of knowing we do not know. (Bali, 2015)
