Synopsis: Chris Gardner is a salesman but the sales record is not good and it has brought his
family in financial difficulties. His wife, Linda leaves and moves to New York. Chris is left to raise
his 5 year-old son, Christopher on his own. Chris’ determination finally pays off when he lands an
unpaid internship in a brutally competitive stockbroker-training program, where only one in twenty
interns will make the cut. But without a salary, Chris and his son are evicted from their apartment
and are forced to sleep on the streets, in homeless shelters and even behind the locked doors of a
metro station bathroom. With self-confidence and the love and trust from his son, Chris Garden
overcomes his obstacles to become a Wall Street legend.
Rational of the chosen film: It is an inspiring movie that shows how a single father fights against
different obstacles for him and his son for a better life. There are good moral values in the film which
stimulate reflection upon the correct attitudes towards life. It encourages students to ponder on the
true definition of what happiness is.

Biographies are written stories of a person's life that were written by someone else. People reading
the biography can satisfy their curiosity about well-known individuals and
can experience historical events as though they were actually present.
The Structure of a biography
- Orientation:
It gives the reader the background information as to why this person is
noteworthy and should have a biography written about them. The
opening paragraph should answer the questions: who, what, where,
when and how.
- Body part:
It unfolds in paragraphs that retell a series of events, usually told in chronological order.
- Conclusion:
The final paragraph is a type of conclusion with a comment on the contribution this person has
made or a summary and evaluation of the person's achievements.
Language features of a biography
- It is mainly written in simple past tense (the final paragraph could also include the present tense).
- Use of linking items to do with time (last year, then, at the same time, next, on Tuesday 24 May,
later, before, meanwhile).
- Plentiful use of action verbs (explored, swam, tackled).

Barack Obama was born August 4, 1961. His parents were both students at the University of Hawaii .

He is biracial. His father, Barack Obama Sr., was a black man from Kenya, and his mother Ann
Dunham, a white woman, had grown up in Kansas. Barack's grandfather had been a soldier in the
army in World War 2.
His parents separated when he was two years old and his father returned to Kenya. After the divorce
his mother remarried, this time to a student from Indonesia, and the family moved to Jakarta where
Barack was enrolled in an Indonesian school. When he was ten years old he went to live with his
grandparents (his mother's parents) who had moved to Hawaii. While attending school in Hawaii he
was one of only three black students in the school.
After graduating from high school he attended college in Los Angeles and then graduated from
Columbia University in New York. Next he attended law school at Harvard and became a civil rights
lawyer. He also taught at the University of Chicago Law School.
In 2007 he announced he would run for the Democratic nomination for President of the United
States. After months of campaigning Obama won the nomination. On election day November 4,
2008 an early victory was achieved and Barack Obama became the first African American to ever be
elected to the highest office in the land, the presidency. It was a truly historical event in the country.
After the election people began naming their newborns after Barack and Michelle. The nation and
the world watch as he starts to accomplish the goals he has set for the betterment of Americans.
