Main Purpose Lecturers (Teaching Focus) are expected to teach and supervise at undergraduate and postgraduate level, taking full responsibility for the design, management and delivery of their teaching. Teaching Fellow – Terms of Appointment

Teaching Fellows support excellence in teaching and learning. In exceptional cases it may allow a career path without the requirement for academic research for members of staff who excel in teaching, scholarship and other activities. These may reflect a background in, and current knowledge of, industry or the professions. The following conditions apply to these posts but may be varied with agreement from the Vice-Principals. 1. Teaching Fellows will hold contracts on the normal terms and conditions for support staff at grades

6 - 10.

2. Departments must provide job descriptions for individual roles. The main duties will be teaching and administration but further detail should be specified on the job description. It is expected that Teaching Fellows will have broadly equivalent workloads over the whole of the year. The work will include: tutorials, lectures, seminars, dissertation supervision and academic personal adviser contact. Administration, preparation and marking, and maintaining levels of scholarship and demonstrable engagement with best practice in the discipline will fill the remainder of the time.

3. Teaching Fellows will be expected to have full duties throughout the year although the nature of

these duties will vary across the year.

4. Promotion for Teaching Fellows will be based on the design as well as the delivery of high quality teaching, together with an increasingly significant leadership role in departmental, College, and external professional settings and engagement with stakeholders.

5. The normal rules for support staff probation will apply. Exceptionally, where there is evidence of

successful, high-level leadership to enhance student learning both within the institution and in the wider context of higher education, consideration will be given to conferring the title of Lecturer (Teaching Focus) subject to serving in this role for three years at Royal Holloway and meeting the criteria for the grade and being awarded the title under the Academic Promotion process.

6. Exceptionally, where there is evidence of the development of a potentially viable research capability,

an appropriate level of investment (for example to gain a professional doctorate, part-time) may be offered during probation.

Main Purpose This job description should be read in conjunction with the Terms of Appointment for a Teaching Fellow. This is a teaching and learning support role. The role holder is expected to engage with developments in the discipline to ensure that he/she remains up to date with best practice. He/she is also expected to engage fully with relevant research literature and with the department, including an understanding of its research agenda, to ensure the delivery of up to date teaching based on current material. There is no requirement to publish research. Key Objectives and Accountabilities

1. To deliver, assess and give feedback to students on high quality teaching programmes, including, where appropriate, delivery by distance or other forms of flexible or off-campus learning.

2. To play a significant role in departmental, School and College teaching and learning activities,

including departmental administrative duties as required.

Senior Teaching Fellow – Terms of Appointment

Senior Teaching Fellows support excellence in teaching and learning and allow a senior career and promotion path without the requirement for academic research for members of staff who excel in teaching, scholarship and other teaching related activities. These may reflect a background in, and current knowledge of, industry, the third sector, the professions or academe. The following conditions apply to these posts but may be varied with agreement from the Vice Principals. For promotion to Senior Teaching Fellow, after three years of service at Royal Holloway, candidates must demonstrate sufficient teaching and professional expertise in the subject to be able to deliver and develop new and existing teaching curricula using appropriate and high-level approaches to learning, teaching and assessment techniques, utilising innovative methods and new technologies where appropriate. Senior Teaching Fellows would be expected to have an established teaching reputation and to be able to evidence academic leadership both inside and outside the institution. They would also need to be able to demonstrate a capacity to contribute and evidence of contributing to, the development of their teaching field not just within but also outside the institution.

Senior Teaching Fellows will be expected to make a leading contribution to the formulation, monitoring, administration and review of departmental, School and institutional teaching and learning related strategies. This may include, but not be limited to, the strategic development of a series of course modules and/or a teaching programme, involvement in developing teaching and learning strategies and initiatives, introducing innovative / transformational changes to the curriculum, conducting and applying pedagogic research.

It is expected that Senior Teaching Fellows will have broadly similar workloads across departments, varied on disciplinary grounds but would be expected to hold more senior administrative roles than Teaching Fellows. The work will include tutorials, lectures, classes/lab classes, workshops/seminars, dissertation supervision and academic personal adviser contact. Administration, preparation and marking, and maintaining high levels of scholarship and retaining familiarity with leading edge developments in their field of teaching and demonstrable engagement with best practice in the discipline/subject will fill the remainder of the contract time.

3. Senior Teaching Fellows will be expected to have full duties throughout the year, although the

nature of these duties will vary across the year.

4. Promotion to Senior Teaching Fellows will be based on the design as well as the delivery of high quality teaching, engagement in teaching-related initiatives in and outside college, leadership of teaching, personal involvement in the receipt and delivery of relevant continuing professional

development, a significant role in departmental, School and College teaching-related activities and external engagement with appropriate stakeholders.

5. The normal rules for support staff probation will apply. Exceptionally, where there is evidence of

successful, high-level leadership to enhance student learning both within the institution and in the wider context of higher education, consideration will be given to conferring the title of Senior Lecturer (Teaching Focus) subject to meeting the criteria for the grade and being awarded the title under the Academic Promotion process.

6. Exceptionally, where there is evidence of the development of a potentially viable research

capability, an appropriate level of investment (for example to gain a professional doctorate, part-time) may be offered during probation.

Main Purpose

This is a senior teaching and learning support role. The role holder is expected to engage with developments in the discipline to ensure that he/she remains up to date with best practice. He/she is also expected to engage fully with the department, including an understanding of its research agenda, to ensure the delivery of up to date teaching. The role holder will be expected to demonstrate evidence of incorporating such best practice in their subject courses /programmes and in curriculum design and development. There is no requirement to publish research. Key Objectives and Accountabilities

1. To design and deliver high quality teaching units and programmes including, where appropriate, delivery by distance or other forms of flexible or off-campus learning.

2. To play a significant role in departmental, School and College activities, including departmental administrative duties as required.

3. Where the role holder is a professionally qualified individual employed in order to teach subjects in

that area (e.g. accounting), part of the role is the facilitation of student engagement with the relevant professional bodies.

4. Where the role holder has relevant industrial experience, part of the roles is to increase the knowledge capacity of the department in that area, and in terms of current best practice. (Other experienced practitioners, e.g. the holder of an MBA with significant experience, or a past head of an organization, would have a role to play as regards 3 and 4.)

1. Teaching, Learning and Scholarship

Deliver a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses as agreed with the Head of Department, including, where appropriate, delivery by distance or other forms of flexible or off-campus learning.

Undertake curriculum and/or course design and development using innovative approaches to learning, teaching and assessment techniques across the subject area and discipline.

Integrate best practice in teaching across the department to include embracing new technologies where appropriate and applying these to the development and use of teaching materials as appropriate.

Articulate a set of professional values related to teaching and learning in higher education.

Demonstrate a successful incorporation of subject and pedagogic research and/ or scholarship within teaching and learning activities as part of an integrated approach to academic practice.

Build links across subject areas and disciplines to foster multi-disciplinary approaches where this adds value.

Participate in, and lead when appropriate, departmental curriculum design activity and teaching quality enhancement activities.

Engage in teaching related initiatives inside and outside the institution, including if appropriate to the STF’s role, the conduct and application of pedagogic research

Assist in the training/updating of colleagues on teaching techniques and current practice as required.

Engage in successful co-ordination, support, supervision, management and/or mentoring of others.

Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations and projects as appropriate.

Supervise placements and internships.

Provide learning support and pastoral care, advice and support to students by undertaking amongst other things, the role of Personal Adviser and academic Tutor.

2. Administration

Undertake and oversee a range of administrative tasks to support the above duties.

Attend departmental, School and College committees as required and undertake related administrative functions, including examining, as required.

Undertake the role of Programme Director or similar leadership as agreed with the Head of Department.

Take part in recruitment initiatives for undergraduate and postgraduate students as required.

Undertake other ad hoc assignments as required. 3. Third Stream Activities

Undertake such third stream income activities as are consistent with other aspects of the role with the agreement of the Head of Department.

Foster dynamic approaches to teaching and learning through leadership and involvement in external learned society and/or professional settings (see 3 and 4) and in the wider context of higher education and any other appropriate environment.

Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience

Essential

Experience of successfully designing and implementing new learning related strategies

Experience of successfully managing course units and convening units

Knowledge and experience of developing new and existing curricula using high-level approaches to learning

Demonstrable knowledge of successfully applying leading developments within the field of education relating to the area of study

Experience of sustained high-quality, innovative teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level in the department’s disciplinary area.

Successful sustained track record of supervising postgraduate students, where appropriate to the discipline.

Recognised teaching qualification relevant to the scope of the role i.e. Higher Education Academy Fellow, Post Graduate Certificate in Education

Experience of successful involvement with exam boards at A level or equivalent level

A first degree in relevant subject

A commitment to continuous personal development.

Desirable PhD in relevant field (or near to completion)

Leadership, Planning and Organising

Essential Experience of organising and running a range of teaching/educational events for other institutions/external partners
