Last Update on December, 2019 Teaching Excellence Saint Mary’s College of California Purpose The purpose of the Saint Mary’s College Teaching Excellence Award is to recognize faculty members who have demonstrated sustained exceptional teaching performance at the College. Teaching excellence is deemed to include: 1) commitment to the values of a liberal arts education; 2) creation of a demanding but caring classroom environment that supports students in their intellectual growth and development; 3) accessibility to students outside the classroom; 4) an impact on student lives beyond the classroom; and 5) contributions to the growth and development of colleagues as effective teachers. These ideals are to be evidenced by student evaluations and written feedback, peer evaluations and recommendations, external reviews, etc. Eligibility To be eligible for the Faculty Service Award, an individual must: 1. Be a full-time faculty member (tenured, tenure-track, or adjunct) with at least five years of experience at Saint Mary’s College; 2. Not have received this award within the past ten years or received a different award based on the same criteria for this award nomination; and 3. Be in compliance with the college-wide diversity training requirement (4.5 hours every three years). 1 Nomination Process Nominations for this award may come from the faculty, Chairs, and/or Deans. Self- nominations are also allowed. Nominations should be in the form of a letter (maximum two pages, 12-point Times New Roman font, one-inch margins) directed to the Office of Faculty Development, stating the reasons for nominating the faculty member and should describe the faculty member’s accomplishments as a teacher in an appropriate fashion to the award criteria. The selection committee will accept an additional letter of support only in cases where one nominator cannot evaluate all aspects of the candidate’s teaching accomplishments. An additional letter should not exceed one page. Only the signature of the letter writer will be considered. All the additional signatures of support will be removed from the review process. A copy of the nominee’s 3-page curriculum vita or copy of their faculty profile should be included as an appendix. Only the first three pages will be reviewed. Original copies of the Student Feedback Forms (formally, student course evaluations) will not be reviewed. 1 The submission of the evidence of the compliance is required starting from the 2020-21 nomination.

Nomination Deadline February 15 Selection Process The Director of Faculty Development and the Committee on Teaching, Learning, and Scholarship constitute the selection committee based on the criteria listed below. The award recipient will be announced at the Scholar’s Reception in March. Selection Criteria In evaluating candidates for this award, consideration will be given to the criteria listed below. It is highly recommended that the recipient have accomplishments in each of the following two broad criteria categories. Teaching Excellence: a. Excellent teaching as demonstrated by student evaluations, peer evaluations, external

reviews, student letters of support, etc.; and/or b. Experience teaching a variety of courses. (Design of new courses is desirable, but not

required.) Commitment to Students: a. Experience advising students individually as well as through organizations and other means; b. Participation in student orientation, information sessions, etc.; and/or c. Mentoring of students concerning career and graduate school decisions.

Form of Award Each award recipient will receive a certificate and a cash award of $5,000 to be used at the recipient’s discretion. A permanent plaque listing annual award recipients will be on display in the Faculty Development Office. If there are no suitable candidates in a given year, the award will be withheld.
