    TEACHING ENGLISH OVERSEAS

    OVERVIEW

Teaching English overseas is an excellent opportunity on many different levels. If English is your nativelanguage, there are numerous opportunities to teach worldwide, either through organized programs that

recruit in the U.S. or at independent schools in a variety of countries.

In order to enjoy the experience and do a good job, individuals must have some desire to teach. Thisdoes not necessarily mean that your long-term goal needs to be a teaching career. That said teachingabroad does provide a solid foundational teaching experience that can be applied to a future job ineducation.

Teaching English affords an opportunity to live in another country, work on foreign language skills andgain solid professional experience that can be used in future employment. It is also sometimes possibleto transition into other types of jobs once you are in the country.

In many cases, you do not need TESL/TEFL (Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language)certification in order to find a position, but it is extremely helpful to have some coursework in teachingmethods and curriculum development and some volunteer tutoring experience.

If you are interested in teaching as a long-term career and have training and some domestic teachingexperience, there are opportunities at international schools around the world. While teachers can findplacements independently, two organizations involved in recruiting teachers are International SchoolServices (www.iss.edu) and Council of International Schools (www.cois.org). As this document is targetedtoward teaching English abroad outside of the international schools framework, the content will focusmore on that opportunity.

Below are some resources to help you start searching for English teaching opportunities.
