Diverse student population: high and low SES, high newcomer population, EAL, special education programs, really, everybody goes here.

All 300 grade nines

…I got an email from my principal in April of 2010. That’s where my story starts.

After the trip, we had a lot of meetings. We learned more about “21st Century Learning”

Our committee of teachers had a million questions. Then we helped to plan an inservice for our staff in May.

After the inservice we still had a million questions.

And then it was June 30th.

I was given a cart of 24 netbooks to use to figure out how to try teaching in a blended learning environment.

Better learn to set up a website or three

I started to write a bit and post it on this site. I started to develop a web presence. This made it real for me.

Joining Twitter was a big

step. I only did it because

my Dad pressured me into

it.

TweetDeck helped me to

make sense of Twitter and

get more out of it. 1000’s of

teachers share ideas on

Twitter- I’d never find this

stuff in a Google search.

So I started to develop a Personal Learning Network out of necessity. I had no idea what a PLN was until I discovered someone “tweeting” about PLN’s one day.

And my own learning started to be layered- I started to feel like I knew a few things- had a few things to offer to others, and that was good, because the year at Dakota was all about experimenting and preparing the staff for changes that were on the horizon.

So my students started

any paper handy.

I discovered the

power of a rolling

chair for formative

assessment.

I still teach like this for

the first bit of the period
